Faculty Interviews for Scholarship Weekend

Dear Faculty,

Planning for this year's Scholarship Weekend has begun and we need your participation! This annual event brings a large group of high achieving high school students to campus not only to compete for scholarships but to spend the night on campus and get a better sense of the campus and the Augsburg community.

We need your help on Friday, Feb. 13th, to interview some of the talented student applicants who are vying for a President's Scholarship, an International President's Scholarship, or an Honors Regents Scholarship and a spot in the Honors Program.

As you may know, faculty interviews during Scholarship Weekend are an integral part of this event. Each applicant will participate in a 20-minute interview with two faculty members and a current Honors Program student. There is great anticipation and excitement for these students and for the faculty and staff who work with them over the course of their visit!

In-person interviews will take place on Friday, Feb. 13th from 3pm to 6pm. If you cannot participate in these interviews but would like to help out, we are also looking for faculty to conduct phone interviews Monday-Wednesday, February 9-11, between either 9:00 am-12:00 pm or 1:00 pm-4:00 pm.

Any time you can give toward this process is greatly appreciated.

Participating faculty members are required to attend one of three training sessions. The training sessions are Feb. 9th from 10-11am or 11am-noon and Feb. 11th from 11-noon.

I hope you will consider this opportunity to meet with some talented prospective students and learn more about them, their academic interests, and their desire to come to Augsburg as well as to share some of your experiences with them.

URGO Phase 1 Application Deadline-February 2nd

The Phase 1 Application for URGO summer research is due February 2nd! Applications can be found at www.augsburg.edu/urgo (click "Apply for Summer Research" orange tab on right).

There are two ways that students can do paid summer research with URGO:

URGO Summer Research Program: a 10-week, on-campus program where students are funded to join a faculty member's on-going research/creative line or carry out an individually-designed project. Full-time researchers receive a $4,000 stipend and support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, weekly seminars, and roundtable discussions with fellow researchers.

URGO Summer Research Assistantship: an opportunity to help a faculty member with an on-going research project or creative line by assisting with research tasks. Research assistants receive a $1,000 stipend for 100 hours of work, which can be completed at any time throughout the summer.

CTL Coffee on Scholarly Writing

Faculty, join your colleagues for a discussion on how to manage scholarly writing with a heavy teaching load. In preparation for the discussion, please read the two brief articles that are linked on the CTL events page http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/upcoming-events/. Come for the coffee (and tea), stay for the ideas and community.

This event will coincide with the announcement of dedicated space on campus for faculty and staff to focus on writing.

Career Quick Stop Hours

New Spring 2015 Career Quick Stop hours:
Tuesdays from 2:30-4:00 p.m.
Wednesdays & Thursdays from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

About Quick Stop:
These drop-in hours are designed to expand access to career coaches and to accommodate impromptu student career questions as they arise. During Quick Stop hours students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis for brief, 15-minute drop-in appointments. These times are meant for quick career questions, brief resume or cover letter reviews, or help getting started with an internship or job search.

Quick Stop is not intended to replace longer appointments, and we regret we cannot accommodate career assessment requests during Quick Stop hours (please schedule an individual appointment: 612-330-1148).

Einstein's is open from 7:30am-8:00pm with the Late Night Menu starting at 7:00pm.

The Commons is open from 7:30am-8:00pm. Market place is serving Grilled Garlic Pork Chops, Grilled Zucchini, Parsley Potatoes, and Quinoa with Caramelized Sweet Onion. Vege is serving Green Bean Casserole, Sautéed Mushrooms, Garlic Potato Fingers, and Curried Rice.

There is Broccoli and Cheese Soup in The Commons all day today!

Scholastic Connections Applications Available

Scholarship Opportunity for Undergraduate Students of Color

Applications are now being accepted for Scholastic Connections for 2015-16. Successful applicants for 5 available positions will receive a $5,000 scholarship and be paired with an alum of color who will serve as the student's mentor.

Eligibility requirements, information about Scholastic Connections and applications are available at the SC web page. Go to Inside Augsburg, A to Z Directory, Scholastic Connections. http://www.augsburg.edu/connections and click on Application Requirements.

Students who receive full tuition scholarships: Promise Scholars, Act 6 Scholars, full tuition President Scholars, etc. are NOT eligible for SC.

Applications and letters of recommendation are due March 1.

Attention Faculty and Staff: If you know of a student of color who could benefit from a $5000 scholarship and work with a mentor, please nominate the student for Scholastic Connections. Diversity & Inclusion Committee Update

The Diversity & Inclusion Committee exists to advance the College's mission by furthering the promise of "an engaged community committed to intentional diversity in its life and work." One of the goals of the committee for the 2014-2015 school year was to design a student survey in order to gain a better understanding of the student experience with inclusion, inclusion-related issues, and discrimination/bias, analyze the results, and create action steps to build on the college's successes while addressing the College's challenges.

One Ummah Consulting, the consulting firm working with the Diversity & Inclusion Committee to implement the survey, has completed their final assessment report based on the 2014 spring semester student inclusion focus group results and the 2014 fall semester student inclusion survey results. The completed assessment report can be found in the public folder of Joanne Reeck, Diversity & Inclusion Committee Core Member.

Next Steps: The Diversity & Inclusion Committee will be planning opportunities to break down the information in the assessment report to the campus community as well as meeting with various campus departments and student organizations separately.

6th Annual CAO Student Leadership Institute

On Saturday, January 24 Campus Activities and Orientation hosted the 6th Annual CAO Student Leadership Institute with over 120 Augsburg student leaders in attendance. This day-long institute featured training sessions led by Augsburg's Students for Racial Justice (SRJ) facilitators Cristian Baca, Keisha Barnard, Hannah Bech, Arianna Genis (alumnus), Laura Grobner (alumnus), Maricio Mata, Valencia McMurray (alumnus), and AuBrianna Weatherspoon (alumnus) and Augsburg's LGBTQIA Ally facilitators Rah Bridwell, Jayce Hanson, Duina Hernandez, Jens Pinther, Brad St. Aubin, and Wren Warpula. The Institute also collaborated with the community organization Voices for Racial Justice and showcased three social justice community advocates and artists Kevin Yang, Alissa Paris Gilbert, and Magdalena Kaluza. Thank you to all who helped to make this event a huge success!

Focused Conversation: Adult Undergrad Enrollment

The second Focused Conversation, "Finishing what we've started: Adult undergraduate enrollment," is TODAY, Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 3:40 p.m. in the Marshall Room.

The session, led by William Mullen, vice president of Enrollment Management, will provide an overview of the trends and opportunity in the adult degree completion market, then engage participants in discussing ideas around how Augsburg can attract and meet the needs of returning undergraduate students.

Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics

The Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics is Tuesday, February 10th, 11:00-12:00 in the Hoversten Chapel. The convocation address, entitled, "The Sociology of Seerah: Reclaiming Prophetic Tradition For Our Time and Place" will be delivered by Dr. Rami Nashashibi, Executive Director of the Inner-City Action Network (IMAN) and visiting professor at the Chicago Theological Seminary.
This timely presentation will focus on Muslim American identity and social justice issues by applying lessons from the life of the prophet Mohammed to our time and place. For more information, contact Matt Maruggi at maruggi@augsburg.edu.

Jay Phinney's Retirement Reception

Jay Phinney, academic affairs coordinator, retires from Augsburg at the end of this month. Jay earned a bachelor's degree from Augsburg College and a master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He returned to Augsburg in 1987 as a transfer credit evaluator and was appointed Associate Registrar in 1993. He served a stint as Interim Registrar in 2000 before holding a position as Assistant to the Dean (Grants Administration and Institutional Research), which eventually evolved into the Academic Affairs Coordinator role he currently holds.

There will be a reception honoring Jay's long service to Augsburg College this Wednesday, January 28, from 11-12:30 in OGC 100. Please join us as we wish Jay well in his future endeavors!

Lynn Casey, CEO of PadillaCRT - Feb 12 at 5 p.m.

Faculty, Staff & Students,

Come hear from Lynn Casey, CEO of PadillaCRT on Thursday, February 12 at 5 p.m. in the Sateren Auditorium. Lynn will be speaking about "Building and Protecting Reputations in Real Time".

In PadillaCRT's headquarters community, Casey has served on and chaired numerous nonprofit boards. Currently, she is vice chair of the Greater Twin Cities United Way, secretary of the University of Minnesota Foundation, and is an active member of the Minnesota Women's Economic Roundtable and the Itasca Project.

Casey was named Woman Business Executive of the Year by the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal in 2011, inducted into the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame in 2011, and inducted into the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame in 2014.

Cedar Performance Tomorrow Night-FREE

The Cedar Cultural Center is pleased to present new work by local Somali Muslim artist Ahmed Gaashaanle...

Wednesday, January 28 at 7 p.m.

Gaashaanle's new work is rooted in traditional Somali music and delivers messages of peace and understanding using variations of the Somali dialect spoken in different tribes. Also on the bill is Hip Hop percussionist Joey Van Phillips, whose performance will feature members of Doomtree.

Through our partnership with The Cedar through Midnimo, we are able to make tickets to this performance FREE for students and faculty with an Augsburg ID! Tickets for the public are $5.

This performance is presented as part of The Cedar's annual 416 Club Commissions program, with support from Jerome Foundation. Each year, 416 Club commissions six local artists to create a new musical work and debut it in a live performance series at The Cedar.

The 2015 performance series will also feature Israel Vega and Toby Ramaswamy on Tuesday, January 27, and Gao Hong and Crystal Myslajek on Thursday, January 29. Tickets for students and the public are $5.

Day at the Capitol to Support MN State Grant 2/25

Students,

It's that time of year again - time to advocate for the Minnesota State Grant, and a great opportunity to learn about political advocacy.
This event, hosted by the Minnesota Private College Council, facilitates meetings between you and your representatives to talk about the State Grant and your personal Augsburg story.

Augsburg Alum Doing Phenomenal Things

Kate Edelen '11, a Chemistry and Environmental Studies double major recently co-authored a Policy Brief discussing utilization of natural resource management in the Central African Republic as a means to ensure sustainable peace and early recovery from the current crisis. Kate Edelen is a research associate and former Scoville Peace Fellow at the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). Previously, Edelen was a Fulbright research fellow at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) where she examined the influence of climate variability on dynamics of cooperation and conflict in South Asia. At FCNL, she works on issues at the interface of natural resource governance, socioeconomic development and environmental diplomacy and peacebuilding. Kate has also worked on community level public health and water resource management projects in India and Uganda, respectively. She holds a M.Sc. in Water Science, Policy and Management from the University of Oxford, where she was an International Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
