AVID Teaching Workshop - Jan. 21

Introduction to High Engagement Pedagogy
Wednesday, January 21st, 3:30-5 p.m.

OGC 100

Since 2009, Augsburg College has partnered with AVID (\Advancement Via Individual Determination) to support student success and provide students with tools and resources to assume responsibility for their own learning. The requisite skills for success fall under broad categories known as WICOR skills: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. This session will introduce easy-to-adopt, high-engagement WICOR strategies for use both in class and in preparation for class. Faculty who currently use AVID strategies will attest to the fact that these approaches are not 'add-ons' or one more thing to cram into an already packed syllabus, but effective ways to engage students in course content, discussions, and activities.

This session will introduce a handful of ideas/strategies (in response to particular needs), give you an opportunity to share your own best practices, and offer resources for ongoing support.

If you have questions, let me know!

If you know you can make it, let me know!

Description of Carousel:
In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent 'up there.' Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. (Carousel. Rodgers & Hammerstein. RNH.com, n.d. Web. )

Scholarship Weekend Interviews

Dear Faculty,

Planning for this year's Scholarship Weekend has begun and we need your participation! This annual event brings a large group of high achieving high school students to campus not only to compete for scholarships but to spend the night on campus and get a better sense of the campus and the Augsburg community.

We need your help on Friday, Feb. 13th, to interview some of the talented student applicants who are vying for a President's Scholarship, an International President's Scholarship, or an Honors Regents Scholarship and a spot in the Honors Program.

As you may know, faculty interviews during Scholarship Weekend are an integral part of this event. Each applicant will participate in a 20-minute interview with two faculty members and a current Honors Program student. There is great anticipation and excitement for these students and for the faculty and staff who work with them over the course of their visit!

In person interviews will take place on Friday, Feb. 13th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.. If you cannot participate in these interviews but would like to help out, we are also looking for faculty to conduct phone interviews Mon.-Wed., February 9-11, between either 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.

Any time you can give toward this process is greatly appreciated.

Participating faculty members are required to attend one of three training sessions. The training sessions are Feb. 9th from 10-11 a.m. or 11 a.m.-noon and Feb. 11 from 11 a.m.-noon.

I hope you will consider this opportunity to meet with some talented prospective students and learn more about them, their academic interests, and their desire to come to Augsburg as well as to share some of your experiences with them.

Please send me (christi@augsburg.edu) a quick note if you can serve as an interviewer on Friday, and/or if you could be available to conduct phone interviews, or let me know if you have questions.

Again, my thanks for your assistance.
Tracy Christianson

For Sale: Modern Glass Top Dining Table

I am selling a "Modern Nova Glass Top Leather Wrapped Steel Dining Table" that we bought at Macy's a few years ago. The glass top does have a few minor scratches, but nothing noticeable. We can throw in 4 leather wrapped chairs for free, but the leather has damage to the seat area on all 4 (though I am sure they can be repaired, if you are crafty). The table is on the smaller side, so would be perfect for an apartment. Asking $150, OBO.

Dimensions:
Length: 60" Height: 30" Width: 35"

We can also deliver if you are unable to pick it up. Happy to answer any additional questions!
