Non-Attendance/Non-Participation Required Report

Greetings,

You are required to submit a Non-Attendance/Non-Participation Report for each of your Spring classes through AugNet Records and Registration between 1/26 and 1/28. Please note that, while the reporting window is 1/26-1/28, you will be reporting on failure to attend or participate during the beginning of the term (1/12-1/25).

Also, please note that you should not report a student as not attending if he or she simply misses a class or two because of illness or other emergency. As long as a student is engaged in the class and keeping in contact, that would constitute attendance.

Instructions and information about the policy are available at www.augsburg.edu/registrar/faculty/non-attendance. Questions can be directed to your Department Chair or the Registrar's Office.

TODAY: Art & Math Talk

Mathematics Colloquium
Wednesday, January 21, 4:30 - 5:30 PM
Old Main 105

Aesthetics and Motivating Principles: Comparing Mathematical Art to Contemporary Art

Sarah Stengle, Artist

Using images from the history of mathematical art and recent contemporary art, this talk will address aesthetic questions, as well as the notion of the anti-aesthetic. Non-practitioners often have a limited view of both fields. For example, nonmathematicians may think mathematicians are not creative because, in their experience, there is one true pre-determined solution. Similarly, non-artists often think that the goal of an artist is simply to create a universally agreed-upon beauty.

The human practice of both mathematics and art is often process-oriented, wherein the product is a string of related results continually refined through the process of working on them. The notion of absolute solutions in either discipline can be philosophically problematic.

The talk will touch on the writings of Bertrand Russell, Alfred North Whitehead, and Elaine Scarry, and will focus primarily on comparing mathematical art to contemporary art.

TREATS WILL BE SERVED
ALL ARE WELCOME
