Non-Attendance Required Reporting Begins Today

Greetings,

You are required to submit a Non-Attendance/Non-Participation Report for each of your Spring classes. The reporting function in your Augnet Records and Registration class lists is available from today, Tuesday, January 27th, through the end of the day Thursday, January 29th. Please note that, while the reporting window is 1/27-1/29, you will be reporting on "no shows" during the beginning of the term (1/12-1/26).

Also, please note that you do not need to report a student as not attending if he or she simply misses a class or two because of illness or other emergency. As long as a student is engaged in the class and keeping in contact, that would constitute attendance.

Instructions and information about the policy are available at www.augsburg.edu/registrar/faculty/non-attendance.

34 Faculty Volunteers Short - Scholarship Weekend

Dear Faculty,

We are 34 faculty volunteers short for Scholarship Weekend and need your participation!

We need your help on Friday, Feb. 13th, to interview some of the talented student applicants who are vying for a President's Scholarship, an International President's Scholarship, or an Honors Regents Scholarship and a spot in the Honors Program.

Faculty interviews during Scholarship Weekend are an integral part of this event. Each applicant will participate in a 20-minute interview with two faculty members and a current Honors Program student. There is great anticipation and excitement for these students and for the faculty and staff who work with them over the course of their visit!

In person interviews will take place on Friday, Feb. 13th from 3pm to 6pm. If you cannot participate in these interviews but would like to help out, we are also looking for faculty to conduct phone interviews Monday-Wednesday, February 9-11, between either 9:00 am-12:00 pm or 1:00 pm-4:00 pm.

Any time you can give toward this process is greatly appreciated.

Participating faculty members are required to attend one of three training sessions. The training sessions are Feb. 9th from 10-11am or 11am-noon and Feb. 11th from 11-noon.

I hope you will consider this opportunity to meet with some talented prospective students and learn more about them, their academic interests, and their desire to come to Augsburg as well as to share some of your experiences with them.

Please send me (christi@augsburg.edu) a quick note if you can serve as an interviewer on Friday, and/or if you could be available to conduct phone interviews, or let me know if you have questions.

Again, my thanks for your assistance.

General Announcements

Diversity & Inclusion Committee Update

The Diversity & Inclusion Committee exists to advance the College's mission by furthering the promise of "an engaged community committed to intentional diversity in its life and work." One of the goals of the committee for the 2014-2015 school year was to design a student survey in order to gain a better understanding of the student experience with inclusion, inclusion-related issues, and discrimination/bias, analyze the results, and create action steps to build on the college's successes while addressing the College's challenges.

One Ummah Consulting, the consulting firm working with the Diversity & Inclusion Committee to implement the survey, has completed their final assessment report based on the 2014 spring semester student inclusion focus group results and the 2014 fall semester student inclusion survey results. The completed assessment report can be found in the public folder of Joanne Reeck, Diversity & Inclusion Committee Core Member.

Next Steps: The Diversity & Inclusion Committee will be planning opportunities to break down the information in the assessment report to the campus community as well as meeting with various campus departments and student organizations separately.

A History of Cedar-Riverside: Th 2/5 12-1 pm

Interested in the history of the Augsburg neighborhood?

Come hear the talk entitled "From Snoose Boulevard to Little Somalia: A History of Cedar-Riverside" presented by Anduin Wilhide, Doctoral Candidate, History Department, University of Minnesota.

Date: 02/05/2015

Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Location: 308 Elmer L. Andersen Library, University of Minnesota

Cost: Free

Funded by a Presidential Innovation Grant, Anduin is preparing a short history essay and interactive digital map for the Augsburg website, intended to be used in first-year classes.

In the talk, she will share stories of the new arrivals who have been coming to the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood in Minneapolis for over 150 years. This area lies between two sacred sites for the Dakota people of Minnesota--St. Anthony Falls and Bdote, the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers--and it was likely used for sugar mapling as part of a seasonal migration cycle. Migrants from New England began arriving in the mid nineteenth century, followed by immigrants from Scandinavia and Central Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the 1970s hippies, students and radical activists established a counterculture community in the area, and since 1990, Cedar-Riverside has become a home for many East African, Southeast Asian and Latino residents. Cedar-Riverside has been a major entry point to Minneapolis, and it remains one of the densest areas in the city. Andy Wilhide will examine why successive groups of newcomers have been drawn to Cedar-Riverside and how they have made it a home. The best way to explore the complex layers of history and memory of this neighborhood is to walk through it and listen to some of the stories of those who have lived, worked and studied here. Wilhide will draw from public history projects, oral histories and walking tours in her presentation.

Day at the Capitol to Support MN State Grant 2/25

Students,

It's that time of year again - time to advocate for the Minnesota State Grant, and a great opportunity to learn about political advocacy.
This event, hosted by the Minnesota Private College Council, facilitates meetings between you and your representatives to talk about the State Grant and your personal Augsburg story.
Student Activities, Student Government, Athletics, Multicultural Student Services, TRIO and Bonner are all partnering as a part of this program. Any questions – please direct them to Amanda Scherer, foundation & government relations. scherera@augsburg.edu; campus ext: 1720.

A few important facts:

1) Date: Wednesday, February 25, 2015
2) Meeting time: 7:45am in OGC Atrium, we return to campus by 3:00pm
3) Free breakfast and lunch
4) We will ride the green line together – bus passes provided by Institutional Advancement
5) Important year to have a good turn-out because there are new House Representatives AND it's a budgeting year. The MN State Grants are ALWAYS looked at when things need to be cut out of the budget and so hearing from students helps.
6) You will get to meet with your representatives and learn about grass roots advocacy.
