TODAY - Religion at Augsburg: New Faculty Seminary

What does it mean to be a college "based on the faith and values of the Lutheran tradition?" And what's a 'Lutheran' in the first place?"

Join us today in Lindell 301 from 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Come with all the questions you have about Religion @ Augsburg and expect more questions. But learn how our "militant modesty" can be a gesture of resistance, on the one hand, and an argument for openness, on the other.

Marty Stortz, Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation, and Pastor Sonja Hagander presiding. All are welcome. Refreshments served. Lindell 301, 4-5:30 p.m.

Event Announcements

Guest Artist Visit from Dur-Dur Band

You are welcome to join the Theater Department in welcoming Dur-Dur Band for a special class visit on November 11th.

Guest Artist Visit from Dur-Dur Band
Sateren Auditorium, Music Building
Tuesday, November 11
1:50-2:35 p.m.

Dur-Dur Band is a musical group from Mogadishu, Somalia that was formed in the 1980s. Dur-Dur was one of the most famous acts in the Somali music scene at the time due in part to their large and robust instrumentation: At its peak, the group had three horn players, four lead singers, three backing singers, two guitarists, a keyboardist, a drummer, two percussionists, and a bass player. Their unique, high energy, cross-cultural, synth pop sound reflects influences of American funk, disco, soul, and West African music. Known as Somalia's "last great party band," Dur-Dur Band disbanded in the early 1990s when the civil war forced the musicians into exile, cutting off the band in its prime. The group released almost a dozen recordings before emigrating to Ethiopia, Djibouti, and America. "Awesome Tapes From Africa" recently reissued some of their albums, including Dur-Dur's Volume 5 mastered from a cassette copy. Pitchfork media says, "This record is a superb glimpse of what was and what's been lost."

Dur-Dur Band is in residence at the Cedar Cultural Center and Augsburg College as part of the Midnimo: Music for Unity, Campus, and Community program that brings Somali musicians from around the world to Minnesota for week-long residencies that include public concert performances and activities in the classroom and the community. The purpose of Midnimo (Somali for "unity") is to build knowledge and understanding of Somali Muslim culture through music and arts. For more information on Midnimo, go to http://www.thecedar.org/midnimo.

Stay tuned for other Midnimo events featuring Dur-Dur Band going on throughout the week of November 10th!
