Critical Thinking: How Well Are We Doing? 11/4-5

It's been 3 years since the last CTL workshop on Critical Thinking. Since that time, we've gathered evidence on our students' performance that might surprise you (and change the way you teach.) National evidence also underscores the urgency of redoubling our efforts in this area. Critical Thinking is one of the General Education skills embedded across the curriculum. This workshop will review our students' performance on nationally calibrated tests and cover strategies for effectively teaching critical thinking.

Mary Lowe and Lori Brandt-Hale will be offering two sessions on Tuesday, November 4, and Wednesday, November 5, both from 3:40-5 p.m. in OCG 111. Katie Bishop will present a summary of assessment data during the first 15 minutes. The session will be available remotely through Adobe Connect and afterwards through a podcast on the General Education website.

If you have any questions, please contact Mary Lowe lowe@augsburg.edu

Artist Joe Page: Installing in the Gage Gallery

The pop-infused, mixed media installations of Joe Page's "Flow Chart" series propose landscapes that are both physically interactive environments and distant cartographical maps. Fluctuating pathways, points, and vibrant color fields sprawl in all directions, propelling the viewer along an immersive journey of varied rhythm, scale, and space within the gallery.

November 4 - December 18, 2014

Artist Talk: November 3, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Oren Gateway Center, Room 113

Artist Bio: Joe Page received his BA in Studio Art from Knox College in Galesburg, IL and his MFA in Ceramic Art from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He currently lives and works in Edwardsville, IL where he is head of ceramics at Southern Illinois University.

Artist Statement: The escapist allure of immersive environments drives my work, orienting the viewer in a place of comfort and curiosity. The vibrant colors, reductive imagery, and illustrated movements within the "Flow Chart" series of installations are deceptively simple, derivative of early video games, pinball machines, mass transit maps, and schematic diagrams. Within this framework, one soon begins to uncover the world's underpinnings: a rules-based system of sculptural parameters, compositional logic, and spatial relationships.

Daily Chapel: All Saints Day TODAY

We invite you to a special chapel on today at 10:40 a.m. when the Augsburg Community celebrates All Saints Day. On this festival day we remember with thanksgiving those who have died this past year.

During the worship service, the names of those who have gone before us will be sung during the "Litany of the Saints." The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saint's Day celebrates the people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day, together with congregations throughout the world, we remember the faithful who have died this past year. David Erickson '18 and Ray Makeever, vocalists.

Chapel this Week:
Tuesday, 11/4 @ 11:30am: Dr. Lori Brandt Hale preaching, Assoc. Prof of Religion, "Theology of the Cross," (Noah Quam, piano)
Wednesday, 11/5 @ 10:40am: Pastor Sonja Hagander preaching (Abby Salmonson, oboe)
Wednesday Night Communion @ 9:30pm: Songs of Praise, Babette Chatman preaching; Rachel Hastings, student testimonial (The Worship Band)
Thursday, 11/6 @ 11:30am: Babette Chatman, Redeemer Center for Life, preaching (The Worship Band)
Friday, 11/7 @ 10:40am: Pr. Mike Matson, Chaplain to Student Athletes, preaching (Riverside Singers; Mandy Isaacson, viola)

We gather in Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center - Everyone is welcome!
