Film About Climate Change, Wed. Evening in Sateren

Native American Film Series begins this month with "Listening for the Rain: Indigenous Perspectives on Climate Change."

Wednesday, October 29, 2014
Sateren Auditorium, Anderson Music Hall
Reception 6:00-6:30
Screening begins at 6:45
Discussion with filmmakers follows

Created by media artists Jeffrey Palmer (Kiowa) and Filoteo Gómez Martínez (Ayuuk), and emerging out of an interdisciplinary research project, this thought-provoking film documents stories and observations about climate change from different Indigenous communities in the central United States. Through the stories they tell, we learn how diverse tribal landscapes have been effected by environmental change and how Indian Country is working on this important issue.

Our screening will also include a discussion with the two filmmakers, Jeff and Filoteo, and Sonia Davila Poblete (Bolivian) whose work with Indigenous communities there around water and environmental issues will add a North-South connection to our pluricultural conversations.

Filoteo Gómez Martínez is an Ayuuk (Mixe) filmmaker from the Sierra Mixe of Oaxaca, Mexico who now resides in Norman, Oklahoma and studies geography at the University of Oklahoma. Filo learned to make videos through workshops organized by state and international agencies, academic entities, and activist organizations. His first video "Dulce Convivencia/Sweet Gathering" was well received, won several international awards, and can be viewed online via IsumaTV. More recently, Filo has been working on videos about Indigenous and other migrant communities in Milwaukee and in Oklahoma City. He has also been collaborating with Jeffrey Palmer a Kiowa filmmaker and researchers at the University of Oklahoma to document the impacts of climate change in Indian Country.

Jeffrey Palmer is an Indigenous (Kiowa) filmmaker and media artist. He received his M.F.A. in Film and Video Production from the University of Iowa and his M.A. in Native American Studies from University of Oklahoma. He currently is an assistant professor of Mass Communication at the University of Central Oklahoma. He was selected in the spring of 2012 to participate in the Sundance Institute Native Laboratory to work on his feature documentary entitled "Honor Beats." His other works include "Origins" (2013), which premiered internationally in 2014 and is currently being reviewed by the National Museum of the American Indian in D.C.

Sonia Davila-Poblete Ph.D., is a sociologist specializing in integrated water management, river basin and environmental policies. As Emeritus Member of the Technical Advisor Committee of the Global Water Partnership (GWP), independent consultant and advisor, she works with grassroots groups, governments, and international organizations on social issues that have to deal with environmental problems, mainly in Mexico and Bolivia. Her primary interests include: foregrounding the Andean culture's "Living Well" paradigm into the search of solutions for environmental and climate change issues, advocating for nature in development projects, and mainstreaming a gender perspective in all public policies.

All Native American Film Series events are open and free to the public as well as the campus community.

A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare
Directed by Martha Johnson
Choreography of the Fairies by Ashwini Ramaswamy
Set Design by Michael Burden
Costumes by Sandra Nei Schulte
Lighting Design by Tom Mays

With its potent mixture of love, comedy, lyricism, and stage magic, A Midsummer Night's Dream has continued to captivate audiences for over four centuries. Set in a mythical world of ancient Athens, moonlit woods, and fairy kingdoms, the play is a poignant and hilarious look at multifarious forms of human folly. Our production will imaginatively explore the play's rich and compelling themes (both overt and covert)–love, power, gender, sexuality, marriage, class, patriarchy–through a fresh, contemporary lens, as we mine the play's poetic, humorous, and magical power.

All Saints Day Chapel Service: Mon., Nov. 3

We invite you to a special chapel on Monday, November 3, at 10:40 a.m. when the Augsburg Community celebrates All Saints Day. On this festival day we remember with thanksgiving those who have died this past year.

During the worship service, the names of those who have gone before us will be sung during the "Litany of the Saints." The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saint's Day celebrates the people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day, together with congregations throughout the world, we remember the faithful who have died this past year.

You may send the names of those people in your life who have died and who you would like to be named and remembered during chapel to Amy Hanson in the Campus Ministry Office at hansona2@augsburg.edu. Please also include the relationship of the person to you (only the name of the deceased will be sung). Information sheets will also be available during chapel. Please submit names by Friday, October 31.

Julie Johnson '99 (Music) Presents November Show

With the support of a 2014 Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Augsburg alum Julie Johnson, with New York director/film designer D.J. Mendel, will present "This Middle Place," an original multimedia show, in Antonello Hall, MacPhail Center for Music, 501 2nd St. S., Minneapolis, MN, 55401, on Tuesday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. The show includes the work of four Minnesota visual artists and writers: Patrick Kemal Pryor, David Sollie, Sean Hill, and Cheri Johnson, also an Augsburg alum ('99) and a faculty member of the English Department.

In new pieces written expressly for the show, Johnson creates music that is not simply inspired by another work, but harmonizes with, plays off of, a piece of visual or literary art that is transformed, by the direction and filmwork of Mendel, into a live performance version of itself. The show will feature Johnson on amplified flute, bass flute, stompbox, and live looping pedals.

Admission is pay-as-you-are-able. Suggested donation $10; no one turned away. For more information, call 612-275-7335 or email flutemonster@hotmail.com
