New Online Copy Request System

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I am pleased to announce that the new copy request system is now live. The old request form as well as any direct email copy requests will be phased out by the end of this semester. Please familiarize yourself with this new system as it will become the standard for all job requests. A training guide for submitting requests can be found on the Central Services page, http://inside.augsburg.edu/centralservices/online-ordering/# .

The link for the new system is located on the Inside Augsburg home page under Administrative Tasks for Faculty and Staff and on the Central Services home page for students. Training for the new copy request system has been scheduled for Wednesdays and Thursdays in October. These training sessions will last approximately 20-30 minutes.

Health Commons Supply Drive

The Augsburg Central Health Commons is a community outreach program held at Central Lutheran Church in Downtown Minneapolis, which provides basic medical services and health education to people of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds free of charge. The mission of the Health Commons is to promote health and healing in marginalized populations. Donations are the primary way that the Health Commons is able to provide these services to its visitors.

The Health Commons will be holding a Supply Drive, sponsored by Tri-Beta, during the week of October 27-October 31, 2014. Below is a list of items requested for donation:
* men's white socks (new)
* feminine pads (not tampons)
* large size diapers (size 4, 5, 6, or pull-ups)
* travel size shampoo
* travel size conditioner
* travel size soap
* travel size toothpaste
* travel size lotion
* deodorant
* razors
* men's underwear - boxers
* baby wipes

Many of these items can be purchased for low cost at a local dollar store. Any contribution is going to be very appreciated! Drop off boxes will be in the Biology Department office (second floor science) and residence halls all week.

All Student Inclusion Survey - Mon., Oct. 27

Hello Augsburg College Community,

In continuing with the Augsburg College Diversity & Inclusion Committee 2014-2015 Plan, all currently enrolled students at Augsburg College will receive an email invitation from One Ummah Consulting on Monday, October 27 asking students to complete an online survey. The purpose of this survey is to obtain a clearer understanding of issues of inclusion on Augsburg College campuses and serves as a follow-up to the focus groups held in spring 2014. As mentioned above, the survey is being conducted by an external consulting firm on behalf of Augsburg College. Survey data will be gathered and reviewed by the consulting firm and survey responses will be confidential.

It is our hope that faculty and staff will encourage the students with whom they work to complete the survey. We also hope that students will not only complete the survey, but will also encourage other students to complete the survey as well.

Look to Augsburg Amail in early spring 2015 for information about the publication of survey results.

These meetings will help explain the changes being made to our retirement plan. CTL Theater Night - Free Tickets to Midsummer

The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Theater Arts Department present

Set in a mythical world of ancient Athens, moonlit woods, and fairy kingdoms, the play is a poignant and hilarious look at multifarious forms of human folly. Our production will imaginatively explore the play's rich and compelling themes (both overt and covert)–love, power, gender, sexuality, marriage, class, patriarchy–through a fresh, contemporary lens, as we mine the play's poetic, humorous, and magical power.

All Saints Day Chapel Service: Mon. Nov. 3

We invite you to a special chapel on Monday, November 3, at 10:40 a.m. when the Augsburg Community celebrates All Saints Day. On this festival day we remember with thanksgiving those who have died this past year.

During the worship service, the names of those who have gone before us will be sung during the "Litany of the Saints." The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saint's Day celebrates the people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day, together with congregations throughout the world, we remember the faithful who have died this past year.

You may send the names of those people in your life who have died and who you would like to be named and remembered during chapel to Amy Hanson in the Campus Ministry Office at hansona2@augsburg.edu. Please also include the relationship of the person to you (only the name of the deceased will be sung). Information sheets will also be available during chapel. Please submit names by Friday, October 31.

Health Commons Celebration Oct. 28

Please join us Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Cedar Cultural Center for an evening celebrating the Health Commons in Cedar-Riverside's 3rd year. Modest appetizers and refreshments will be available. The Taleex Band will be performing at the event and free entrance to the film "Fishing Without Nets" will be given to all attendees. Everyone is welcome!

Film Festival Submissions TODAY - Friday 10/24/14

Art Club is seeking film submissions for "A Very Spooky Film Festival" which will be held on October 28 from 7 - 8 p.m. in the Sateren Auditorium.

Films should be 3-5 minutes submitted in a MOV format and delivered on a DVD or flashdrive. Submissions may be left in the Pumpkin Dropbox located in the basement of Old Main. Submissions are due TODAY (10/24/14).

Festival participants will cast votes for favorite films and prizes will be awarded to winners.

Alumnus Hopes CSBR Gifts Inspire Young Scientists

It was the summer of 1963 when Augsburg accepted two curious high school boys into its summer National Science Foundation course for high school students. The course sparked a deep interest in chemistry for Jon DeVries '68 and his friend, Covey Hendrickson, who had polio.

That spark influenced the two tight-knit friends to enroll together at Augsburg to study chemistry.

Covey lost his battle with the after-effects of polio while the two were attending Augsburg, but DeVries' love for chemistry lived on.

DeVries went on to earn a doctorate degree in organic chemistry from the University of Minnesota, and then spent the majority of his career as a scientist at General Mills, specializing in food safety and nutrition analysis.

"Augsburg provided me a very good baseline--very solid in math, science, and chemistry--which was great for launching a career in chemistry," DeVries said.

DeVries and his wife, Sharon, hope to inspire other science-minded youth to become well-rounded contributors to society, whether it be in industry, government or academia, utilizing Augsburg-acquired scientific skills and other essential life competencies. They are acting on this hope by giving $50,000 for two faculty offices in Augsburg's planned Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR).
