Phil Adamo Book-Signing and Reading - October 29

The Christensen Center for Vocation, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Department of History invite you to celebrate the vocation and scholarship of medieval history professor Phil Adamo.

Join us on Wednesday, October 29 from 3:15-5:00 p.m. in Oren Gateway Room 100. Professor Adamo will sign books, which will be available for purchase. Adamo recently published two books, The Medieval Church: A Brief History (2013) and New Monks in Old Habits: The Formation of the Caulite Monastic Order (2014).

He will also read "Hanging Little Joe on the Suburban Ponderosa, Or, What has the Middle Ages to do with the Old West?" an essay soon to be published in a special edition of the Journal of the West. This essay looks at Adamo's childhood, growing up on the edge of a Texas suburb, and how that experience with the imagined Old West led to his vocation as a medievalist.

Refreshments will be provided. For more information, see http://www.augsburg.edu/ccv/2014/10/13/philadamovocationandscholarship/

All-Student Inclusion Survey

Hello Augsburg College Community,

In continuing with the Augsburg College Diversity & Inclusion Committee 2014-2015 Plan, all currently enrolled students at Augsburg College will receive an email invitation from One Ummah Consulting on Monday, October 27 asking students to complete an online survey. The purpose of this survey is to obtain a clearer understanding of issues of inclusion on Augsburg College campuses and serves as a follow-up to the focus groups held in spring 2014. As mentioned above, the survey is being conducted by an external consulting firm on behalf of Augsburg College. Survey data will be gathered and reviewed by the consulting firm and survey responses will be confidential.

It is our hope that faculty and staff will encourage the students with whom they work to complete the survey. We also hope that students will not only complete the survey, but will also encourage other students to complete the survey as well.

Look to Augsburg Amail in early spring 2015 for information about the publication of survey results.

Further information about the production:

A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare
Directed by Martha Johnson
Choreography of the Fairies by Ashwini Ramaswamy
Set Design by Michael Burden
Costumes by Sandra Nei Schulte
Lighting Design by Tom Mays

With its potent mixture of love, comedy, lyricism, and stage magic, A Midsummer Night's Dream has continued to captivate audiences for over four centuries. Set in a mythical world of ancient Athens, moonlit woods, and fairy kingdoms, the play is a poignant and hilarious look at multifarious forms of human folly. Our production will imaginatively explore the play's rich and compelling themes (both overt and covert)–love, power, gender, sexuality, marriage, class, patriarchy–through a fresh, contemporary lens, as we mine the play's poetic, humorous, and magical power.

"Fishing Without Nets," directed by first-time feature filmmaker Cutter Hodierne and presented by VICE Films, won the Directing Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and is based on a short film of the same name which took home the Grand Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Shot in East Africa with Somali non-actors, "Fishing Without Nets" combines the epic cinematic vision of an action thriller with the intimate, textured qualities of an art film, humanizing the pirates by bringing us inside their moral dilemmas and gut-wrenching struggles.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Pam '79 and Mark '79 Moksnes Huddle Up for CSBR

Augsburg Regent Pam (Hanson) Moksnes '79 remembers planting seedlings in Murphy Square with her six Auggie house mates more than 35 years ago. Today the trees' roots run deep into the earth and their branches reach for the sky—not unlike Pam and her husband Mark '79, who say their time at Augsburg empowered them to reach for their goals. "Augsburg prepared us to be courageous and do whatever's next," explains Pam. She and Mark are among Augsburg's most loyal alumni leaders, as well as generous benefactors to initiatives such as the Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR). The Chanhassen couple counts 34 years of marriage, three children (including Auggie, Laura '06), and three grandchildren. "God has blessed our lives together, our family, and our careers," says Pam. "We have more than enough to care for our family and give back."
