Academic Year Research Grants Available
Each fall URGO offers $1,000 research grants for students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project. These grants go quickly, so apply SOON!
Applications for Academic-Year Research Grants are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, complete the electronic application at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/. Mentor approval for projects is shown by emailing the application and report form to urgo@augsburg.edu.

Retirement Plan Changes are Coming: Find Out More
Augsburg College and TIAA-CREF announce group transition workshop meetings and individual counseling sessions for faculty and staff. These sessions are being held at no cost to you. These meetings will help explain the changes being made to our retirement plan. At the individual meetings You can discuss your financial situation with an experienced TIAA-CREF Financial Consultant on a confidential basis. They are available to discuss how to pursue your financial goals, plan for retirement, and invest in financial products such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities.

Campus Cupboard Food Shelf Open to All Students
The Campus Cupboard food shelf is now open the following times:
Tuesdays 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.
Wednesdays 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Fridays 12:30-4 p.m.
The food shelf is open to any Augsburg student to use.
The Augsburg College food shelf, Campus Cupboard, provides free food to students throughout the academic year. Campus Cupboard is located in Hoversten Chapel of Foss Center by the back stairwell to the balcony. If you are an Augsburg student who would like to use the food shelf, stop by during open hours. Students may pick out five food items each visit. An Augsburg student ID is required. (Names will not be recorded, only ID numbers.)
If you would like to donate to the food shelf: Donations of non-perishable food items are accepted in green collection bins at the Welcome Desk and Einstein's (in Christensen), the Campus Ministry/Theater Office (in Foss), and the Urn/Mort and Anderson dorm lobbies.

Next Focused Conversation is Monday/Tuesday
The 2014-15 series of Focused Conversations continues Monday and Tuesday with the topic, "How do we grow financial resources collectively to serve our mission?" led by Beth Reissenweber, chief financial officer and vice president for Finance and Administration. The session will be held twice. You are invited to attend whichever session fits your schedule:

The format of the Focused Conversation series includes a brief presentation to share data and context followed by conversation among and input from attendees. SciTechsperience - Paid Internships in STEM Fields

Paid Internships in STEM, Hands-on opportunities in Minnesota Business
Becky Siekmeier, Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA)
On Wednesday, October 22, Becky Siekmeier of the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) will give the presentation, "Paid Internships in STEM, Hands-on opportunities in Minnesota Business", and answer questions about the SciTechsperience internship program.
This paid internship program connects talented college students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines to rewarding hands-on opportunities in dynamic Minnesota businesses. Augsburg student David Fowler was one of four students to participate in a SciTecshsperience internship last year. David will be present to share his experience and help with the Q & A portion.
Eligible students must be:
* In good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
* A college junior or senior (60 credits completed)
* At least 18 years of age
* Currently enrolled and pursuing a qualifying science, technology,
engineering or math degree.
Augsburg majors that are eligible include biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, management information science (MIS), and physics (including students doing pre-engineering).

Seminary and Divinity School Day - October 28
Are you considering the idea of theological graduate school education? Is there a possibility you might want to become a pastor, a professor of religion, or work in a church-related vocation?
On Tuesday, October 28, gather with your peers for Seminary and Divinity School Day, a special day of discernment. The day includes several thought-provoking breakout sessions and the opportunity to meet with representatives from 17 top-notch seminaries and divinity schools from around the nation, from multiple denominational affiliations.
The day will also feature a keynote luncheon address - "Where Next? Vocation as Path" by Marty Stortz, Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation.
By attending Seminary and Divinity School Day, you will also have the chance to visit with students from other regional undergraduate schools who have similar questions and interests. Combine Peace Corps/VISTA with Grad School - 10/21
Are you interested in combining graduate school with service in either Peace Corps or VISTA? Michigan Tech offers programs in 11 departments (Biology; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Environmental and Energy Policy; Forestry; Geology; Industrial Archaeology; Mechanical Engineering; Rhetoric, Theory and Culture (humanities and social sciences); and Science Education) that combine practical service opportunities with time on campus. Most students spend one academic year on campus, then either two years in Peace Corps or one year in VISTA, followed by one more semester back on campus. Some programs accept students from any undergraduate academic discipline.

Keeping Track of Auggies
Boyte Speaks at White House Civic Learning Summit
On Thursday, October 16, Harry Boyte is attending and speaking at the White House Civic Learning and Service Summit, sponsored by the White House, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Tisch School of Citizenship at Tufts University.
The purpose of the Summit is to bring together leaders in education, civic learning, national service and civic engagement. They will explore how an increased emphasis on civic learning and expanded focus on service can play a central role in educating young people and to tackling today's pressing national and educational challenges. Hosted on the Tufts University campus, this summit will address two key topics facing higher education the value of civic engagement and how to measure and communicate civic engagement commitment and outcomes.
True's "Holy Thrift" Show this Saturday
"Beyond the Surface" art exhibition will feature the wearable art work of Mary Laurel True and 30 other women artists this Saturday, October 18, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Grain Belt Bottling House at 79-13th Avenue NE. Everyone is welcome.
