Academic Year Research Grants Available

Each fall URGO offers $1,000 research grants for students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project. These grants go quickly, so apply SOON!

Applications for Academic-Year Research Grants are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, complete the electronic application at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/. Mentor approval for projects is shown by emailing the application and report form to urgo@augsburg.edu.

Diversity and Inclusion Update/Meeting - Oct. 16

Augsburg College's mission states our commitment to "..intentional diversity in our life and work." The Diversity and Inclusion Committee serves as a catalyst for change and continuous improvement in areas of diversity and inclusion.

On Oct. 16, 12:05-1 p.m., (Lindell 301) we invite faculty, staff and students to hear about areas of focus for 2014-15 and provide input, ask questions, and be engaged in this critical work.

Show Your Gratitude During Philanthropy Week

Contribute to our community during Philanthropy Week (October 13-17) by showing your gratitude and/or by giving to support current students.

STUDENTS--
Did you receive a named scholarship, supported by a donor? Did you receive a Minnesota state grant, supported by tax-payers? If so, stop by Christensen Center to write a thank you note to your donors and/or your state senators and representatives. 259 students received named scholarship awards supported by private donors and over 900 students at Augsburg received the state grant. GRATITUDE is one of the three G's for a happy, healthy life!

Attend Philanthropy Week Lunch on Thursday, October 16 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in OGC 100 to thank current and past donors to The Augsburg Fund. Last Spring more than 50 faculty and staff wrote almost 500 handwritten notes to donors thanking them for their gifts and asking them to make a gift again which brought in over $9,000. Nabo is open from 7:30am to 8:00pm. The Special of the Day is a Santa Fe Turkey Wrap.

Einsteins is open from 7:30am-9:00pm, with the late night menu starting at 7:00pm.

The Commons is open from 7:30am-8:00pm. Market Place is serving Herb Roasted Pork Loin, Grilled Quinoa Cakes, Braised Carrots with Thyme, and Sweet Potato Fries. Vege is serving Couscous with Carrots, Raisins and Pine Nuts, Lentil Sambar, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Brown Butter Hazelnut Asparagus.

Campus Cupboard Food Shelf Open to All Students

The Campus Cupboard food shelf is now open the following times:

Tuesdays 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.
Wednesdays 2:30- 4:30 p.m.
Fridays 12:30- 4 p.m.

The food shelf is open to any Augsburg student to use.

The Augsburg College food shelf, Campus Cupboard, provides free food to students throughout the academic year. Campus Cupboard is located in Hoversten Chapel of Foss Center by the back stairwell to the balcony. If you are an Augsburg student who would like to use the food shelf, stop by during open hours. Students may pick out five food items each visit. An Augsburg student ID is required. (Names will not be recorded, only ID numbers.)

If you would like to donate to the food shelf: Donations of non-perishable food items are accepted in green collection bins at the Welcome Desk and Einstein's (in Christensen), the Campus Ministry/Theater Office (in Foss), and the Urn/Mort and Anderson dorm lobbies.

Seminary and Divinity School Day - October 28

Are you considering the idea of theological graduate school education? Is there a possibility you might want to become a pastor, a professor of religion, or work in a church-related vocation?

On Tuesday, October 28, gather with your peers for Seminary and Divinity School Day, a special day of discernment. The day includes several thought-provoking breakout sessions and the opportunity to meet with representatives from 17 top-notch seminaries and divinity schools from around the nation, from multiple denominational affiliations.

The day will also feature a keynote luncheon address - "Where Next? Vocation as Path" by Marty Stortz, Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation.

By attending Seminary and Divinity School Day, you will also have the chance to visit with students from other regional undergraduate schools who have similar questions and interests. SciTechsperience - Paid Internships in STEM Fields

On Wednesday, October 22, Becky Siekmeier of the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) will give the presentation, "Paid Internships in STEM, Hands-on opportunities in Minnesota Business", and answer questions about the SciTechsperience internship program.

This paid internship program connects talented college students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines to rewarding hands-on opportunities in dynamic Minnesota businesses. Augsburg student David Fowler was one of four students to participate in a SciTecshsperience internship last year. David will be present to share his experience and help with the Q & A portion.

Eligible students must be:
• In good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
• A college junior or senior (60 credits completed)
• At least 18 years of age
• Currently enrolled and pursuing a qualifying science, technology,
engineering or math degree.

Augsburg majors that are eligible include biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, management information science (MIS), and physics (including students doing pre-engineering).

Choral Master Class with Creole Choir of Cuba

Presented by the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and hosted by Augsburg College

Augsburg College Students & Faculty – don't miss this unique opportunity to experience the Folk Tradition of Afro-Caribbean Music in a participatory workshop with members of the Grammy-nominated choir from Camagüey, Cuba. Comprised of descendants of Haitian migrants, the Creole Choir of Cuba offers exuberant, percussion-infused takes on myriad Caribbean styles and will be performing at the Ordway on October 22. During the master class, the choir will take participants through a range of musical genres covered in their repertoire for a crash course in Haitian singing and harmonies.

Monday, Oct. 20: Young Adults in Global Mission

Sarah Funkhouser, with Young Adults in Global Mission will preach in chapel on Monday, 10/20, at 10:40am. Following chapel, we will host a luncheon for students interested in hearing more from Sarah about her work with YAGM, which is a yearlong international service-learning program of the ELCA. There are currently 60+ young adults, ages 21-29, scattered across the world learning about what it means to be called to serve and be welcomed into God's global family. Interested in learning more? Hardwiring Happiness Convo Speaker Here Thursday

The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion welcomes Dr. Rick Hanson a neuropsychologist and New York Times best selling author for the CCHP convocation on Thursday, October 16 from 11-12 noon in the Chapel. "Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of Contentment, Calm and Confidence was published in October, 2013 and became a New York Times best seller (it's available now in the Augsburg bookstore). The book shows you how to tap into the hidden power of everyday experiences to change your brain and your life for the better.
