Phil Adamo Book-Signing and Reading - October 29

The Christensen Center for Vocation, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Department of History invite you to celebrate the vocation and scholarship of medieval history professor Phil Adamo.

Join us on Wednesday, October 29 from 3:15-5:00 p.m. in Oren Gateway Room 100. Professor Adamo will sign books, which will be available for purchase. Adamo recently published two books, The Medieval Church: A Brief History (2013) and New Monks in Old Habits: The Formation of the Caulite Monastic Order (2014).

He will also read "Hanging Little Joe on the Suburban Ponderosa, Or, What has the Middle Ages to do with the Old West?" an essay soon to be published in a special edition of the Journal of the West. This essay looks at Adamo's childhood, growing up on the edge of a Texas suburb, and how that experience with the imagined Old West led to his vocation as a medievalist.

Remember the Writing Lab

Last year, tutors in the Writing Lab conducted well over 2,000 conferences with students on their writing assignments, and so far this fall, hundreds of students have already used this valuable support service. The lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken/needed. Just show up.

Considering Latin Honors

A working group of faculty have been charged with reviewing the current system of awarding Latin Honors at Augsburg. This group-- John Schmit, Ben Denkinger, Pamela Moss, Tony Clapp and Diane Pike-- are reviewing data, other models, and exploring how well our current system serves the students and our institution. General sessions for input will be held later this fall, but comments and questions are invited anytime. If you would like additional information or wish to share ideas, please contact any member of the working group or facilitator Pike at pike@augsburg.edu directly.
More updates will be shared but we want faculty, staff, and students to know this work is being undertaken.

Nabo is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Special of the Day is Chicken and Pepperoni Pasta.

Einsteins is open from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., with the late night menu starting at 7:00 p.m.

The Commons is open from 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Market Place is serving Roast Beef & Au Jus, Grilled Quinoa Cakes, Braised Carrots with Thyme, and Boiled Baby Reds with Basil. Vege is serving Boiled Dill Potatoes, Wild Rice Pilaf, Mushroom Bourguignon, and Peas & Herbed Carrots.

Annual Benefit Enrollment Period

The annual benefit enrollment period will be from November 10 - November 21. Human Resources we will be sending out an email to your Augsburg email address next week with more details. However, in the meantime, please block off your calendar to attend one of the five benefit enrollment sessions:

Open Enrollment Information Sessions - Christensen Center, Marshall Room:
November 10 at 9:30 a.m.
November 12 at 8:30 a.m.
November 13 at 4:45 p.m.
November 18 at 2:45 p.m.
November 21 at 12:00 p.m.

Representatives from HealthPartners, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2015.

Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections.

Health Commons Supply Drive

The Augsburg Central Health Commons is a community outreach program held at Central Lutheran Church in Downtown Minneapolis, which provides basic medical services and health education to people of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds free of charge. The mission of the Health Commons is to promote health and healing in marginalized populations. Donations are the primary way that the Health Commons is able to provide these services to its visitors.

The Health Commons will be holding a Supply Drive, sponsored by Tri-Beta, during the week of October 27 - October 31, 2014. Below is a list of items requested for donation:
* men's white socks (new)
* feminine pads (not tampons)
* large size diapers (size 4, 5, 6, or pull-ups)
* travel size shampoo
* travel size conditioner
* travel size soap
* travel size toothpaste
* travel size lotion
* deodorant
* razors
* cough drops
* baby wipes

Many of these items can be purchased for low cost at a local dollar store. Any contribution is going to be very appreciated! Drop off boxes will be in the Biology Department office (second floor science) and residence halls all week.

Meet at 9 a.m. in the Oren Gateway Lobby. The morning will be spent participating in a variety of projects at one of the neighborhood's most important organizations -- the Brian Coyle Community Center. Learn about the many programs of the Center including: the food shelf, youth and English Language Learning programs, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarf Boutique, and much more.

Lunch is noon to 12:45 p.m. on your own, but we will be gathering at the Afro Deli.

Option 2, 1-4 p.m.: West Bank Cleanup

Meet at 1 p.m. in Oren Gateway Center Lobby. Spend the afternoon with the West Bank Business Association staff and Augsburg colleagues for a neighborhood clean-up while learning about the restaurants, coffee shops, bars and arts organization in Cedar-Riverside. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.

INROADS Internship Program Seeks STEM Applicants

The Mission of the INROADS internship program is to develop and place talented underserved youth in business and industry, and prepare them for corporate and community leadership.

INROADS is an international organization with over 35 offices serving nearly 2,000 Interns at over 200 companies.

INROADS is seeking talented underserved STEM students who are freshman, sophomores or juniors (must have at least one more summer before graduation).

We are currently setting a date for opportunities to meet with INROADS recruiter and Augsburg alumni Matthew Shannon. Seminary and Divinity School Day - October 28

Are you considering the idea of theological graduate school education? Is there a possibility you might want to become a pastor, a professor of religion, or work in a church-related vocation?

On Tuesday, October 28, gather with your peers for Seminary and Divinity School Day, a special day of discernment. The day includes several thought-provoking breakout sessions and the opportunity to meet with representatives from 18 top-notch seminaries and divinity schools from around the nation, from multiple denominational affiliations.
The day will also feature a keynote luncheon address - "Where Next? Vocation as Path" by Marty Stortz, Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation.

Come and stop by the atrium anytime from 9:30 to 3:30, you don't have to be there the whole time to take part in the day.

Film "Listening for the Rain" October 29, Sateren

Native American Film Series begins this month with "Listening for the Rain: Indigenous Perspectives on Climate Change."

Join filmmakers Jeffrey Palmer (Kiowa) and Filoteo Gómez Martínez (Ayuuk) for a screening and discussion of their provocative film, which documents the stories and observations of different Indigenous communities on climate change. Sonia Davila Poblete will connect these stories from the central United States to those of Indigenous Bolivians.

Peace Corps Informational Session

The Strommen Center for Meaningful Work would like to invite students to attend an informational session with representatives from the Peace Corps on Wednesday, October 29 from 4:45-5:30 in the Strommen Center, Suite 100 of the Christensen Center.

Get paid to live and make a difference overseas while building your résumé through programs in business, health, education, agriculture, environment, and youth development. Peace Corps Volunteers receive full support including a living stipend, housing, medical/dental care, vacation days, international travel, and more as well $7,425 at the completion of service. Student loan deferment and/or cancellation is possible.

5 p.m. Tonight - The Mindfulness Club & SRJ Present...

"Stay Awake for It!--Making Meaning with Mindfulness and Meditation"--an evening with local wellness activist and freedom fighter Dr. Joi Lewis. Tonight in OGC 100 @ 5-7 p.m.

"Dr. Joi" will guide us in basic meditation (friendly to beginners) with wisdom and inspiration from bell hooks and rumi, plus some mindful eating (food from AfroDeli). Dr. Joi will facilitate the practice of being "awake" through different medians to create space for restorative social justice, mindful leadership, and radical self-care. With such space, Dr. Joi believes we are better able to gain access to deeper connections and healthy expressions of grief, pain and joy, which then, according to Dr. Joi, allows us to heal and fall in love with our Augsburg community, the larger community, and ourselves more deeply--or for the first time. Please join us. Everyone welcome!

More About Dr. Joi D. Lewis:
Dr. Joi is a wellness activist and freedom fighter who believes in interrupting her own oppressor patterns with loving kindness and invites others to do the same. She uses tools like meditation, mindfulness, chanting, song and poetry to examine how race intersects with our multiple and intersecting identities: class, gender identity, religion, nationality, ability sexual orientation, etc. She believes that the lack of exploring our multiple and intersecting identities induce isolation & disconnection within our community. So Dr. Joi offers a practice of being "awake" that requires our ultimate health not just our ultimate sacrifice.

Dr. Joi spent over 20 years as a practitioner-scholar in higher education at a variety of public and private institutions: land grant, selective private, women's college and a community college. She also served as Chief Diversity Officer at three different institutions and as Vice President of Student Affairs at two institutions. Throughout her tenure in a variety of senior administrator roles, as well as through her scholarship, she has underscored her commitment to ensuring that all people-particularly those who have been historically underrepresented--have access to the best programs, services, and experiences possible. Dr. Joi is also a certified Yoga and Zumba Teacher as well as a practitioner and facilitator of meditation.

Dr. Joi is a trusted leader in a variety of communities. Dr. Joi uses herself as instrument by minding her own multiple and intersecting identities. She is a trusted leader in a variety of communities--particularly within our local Black Diaspora, Queer, Faith, and Young People Artist Communities. She is mindful of the ways in which race and ethnicity intersect with identities based on gender(s), social class, religion, national origin, sexuality, and physical ability, as she works to hold space that supports our multiple and intersecting identities. Dr. Joi believes that when individuals, institutions and organizations "practice" compassion, loving kindness and radical self-care it becomes easier to do well and do good and build sustainable and reciprocal relationships with both local and global communities.
