Academic Year Research Grants Available

Each fall URGO offers $1,000 research grants for students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project. These grants go quickly, so apply SOON!

Augsburg Involved in AAC&U Global Conference

Augsburg College was well represented at the recent AAC&U Global Learning in College Conference held in Minneapolis Oct. 16-18. The Sabo Center for Citizenship and Center for Global Education collaborated on a pre-conference, "East African Immersion Day." Twelve faculty and administrators from across the U.S. and Canada participated in the event. It was facilitated by Mary Laurel True, Sabo Center, and Regina McGoff and David Hamilton, CGE.

Joseph Erickson, Education, and Ann Lutterman Aguilar, CGE Mexico presented a session on "Clues for Educating Global Citizens: What Our Research Suggests." Student Nazrawit Dimore represented Augsburg on a closing panel, "Students' Stories: Influential Experiences and Turning Points in Global Learning."

Phil Adamo Book-Signing and Reading - October 29

The Christensen Center for Vocation, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Department of History invite you to celebrate the vocation and scholarship of medieval history professor Phil Adamo.

Join us on Wednesday, October 29 from 3:15pm-5:00pm in Oren Gateway Room 100. Professor Adamo will sign books, which will be available for purchase. Adamo recently published two books, The Medieval Church: A Brief History (2013) and New Monks in Old Habits: The Formation of the Caulite Monastic Order (2014).

He will also read "Hanging Little Joe on the Suburban Ponderosa, Or, What has the Middle Ages to do with the Old West?" an essay soon to be published in a special edition of the Journal of the West. This essay looks at Adamo's childhood, growing up on the edge of a Texas suburb, and how that experience with the imagined Old West led to his vocation as a medievalist.

Get Paid to Do an Internship

Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?

You may be able to do just that because of a grant recently awarded to Augsburg College. Augsburg has recently been awarded a Great Lakes Career Ready Grant. The Career Ready Internship grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation provides funds to colleges and universities so that they can partner with businesses and nonprofits to develop new paid internships, and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship
* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study)
* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations
* Internships will take place Spring and Summer 2015

Second Flu Shot Clinic Scheduled for 10/28

CCHP reminds all interested students, faculty and staff that the MN Visiting Nurse Association will be back on campus on Tuesday 10/28/14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Riverside Room to administer flu shots.

Most insurances are accepted so bring your insurance card and a photo ID. The cost of the shot is $30 cash or check if you do not have insurance. There is no need to make an appointment. It is a walk-in clinic and takes just minutes to get the shot. Help keep Augsburg healthy this flu season - get your flu shot on Tuesday! Health Commons Supply Drive

The Augsburg Central Health Commons is a community outreach program held at Central Lutheran Church in Downtown Minneapolis, which provides basic medical services and health education to people of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds free of charge. The mission of the Health Commons is to promote health and healing in marginalized populations. Donations are the primary way that the Health Commons is able to provide these services to its visitors.

The Health Commons will be holding a Supply Drive, sponsored by Tri-Beta, during the week of October 27th - October 31st, 2014. Below is a list of items requested for donation:
• men's white socks (new)
• feminine pads (not tampons)
• large size diapers (size 4, 5, 6, or pull-ups)
• travel size shampoo
• travel size conditioner
• travel size soap
• travel size toothpaste
• travel size lotion
• deodorant
• razors
• cough drops
• baby wipes

Many of these items can be purchased for low cost at a local dollar store. Any contribution is going to be very appreciated! Drop off boxes will be in the Biology Department office (second floor science) and residence halls all week.

Focused Conversation - TODAY

Beth Reissenweber, chief financial officer and vice president for Finance and Administration, will lead the second (of two) Focused Conversation session, "How do we grow financial resources collectively to serve our mission?" this afternoon, Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 3:40 p.m. in OGC 100.

The format of the Focused Conversation series includes a brief presentation to share data and context followed by conversation among and input from attendees. The slides for the sessions will be available online for reference afterward, but people are encouraged to attend in person to engage in the discussion portion of the sessions.

Stay Awake For It - Mindfulness Event Tomorrow

Augsburg's Mindfulness Club and Students for Racial Justice Present: "Stay Awake for It!--Making Meaning with Mindfulness and Meditation"--an evening with local wellness activist and freedom fighter Dr. Joi Lewis. Next Wednesday (10/22) in OGC 100 5-7 p.m.

"Dr. Joi" will guide us in basic meditation (friendly to beginners) with wisdom and inspiration from bell hooks and rumi, plus some mindful eating (food from AfroDeli). Dr. Joi will facilitate the practice of being "awake" through different medians to create space for restorative social justice, mindful leadership, and radical self-care. With such space, Dr. Joi believes we are better able to gain access to deeper connections and healthy expressions of grief, pain and joy, which then, according to Dr. Joi, allows us to heal and fall in love with our Augsburg community, the larger community, and ourselves more deeply—or for the first time. Please join us. Everyone welcome!

More About Dr. Joi D. Lewis:
Dr. Joi is a wellness activist and freedom fighter who believes in interrupting her own oppressor patterns with loving kindness and invites others to do the same. She uses tools like meditation, mindfulness, chanting, song and poetry to examine how race intersects with our multiple and intersecting identities: class, gender identity, religion, nationality, ability sexual orientation, etc. She believes that the lack of exploring our multiple and intersecting identities induce isolation & disconnection within our community. So Dr. Joi offers a practice of being "awake" that requires our ultimate health not just our ultimate sacrifice.

Dr. Joi spent over 20 years as a practitioner-scholar in higher education at a variety of public and private institutions: land grant, selective private, women's college and a community college. She also served as Chief Diversity Officer at three different institutions and as Vice President of Student Affairs at two institutions. Throughout her tenure in a variety of senior administrator roles, as well as through her scholarship, she has underscored her commitment to ensuring that all people-particularly those who have been historically underrepresented--have access to the best programs, services, and experiences possible. Dr. Joi is also a certified Yoga and Zumba Teacher as well as a practitioner and facilitator of meditation.

With her own multiple identities, Dr. Joi is a trusted leader in a variety of communities--especially within our local African American and Queer communities. She is mindful of the ways in which race and ethnicity intersect with identities based on gender(s), social class, religion, national origin, sexuality, and physical ability, as she works to hold space that supports our multiple and intersecting identities. Dr. Joi believes that when individuals, institutions and organizations "practice" compassion, loving kindness and radical self-care it becomes easier to do well and do good and build sustainable and reciprocal relationships with both local and global communities.

"Community Organizing - The Strategy for Building a Powerful Public Life and Community"

What makes organizing different from other justice work? What are the Faces of Power and how do organizers build power through relationships? How will disenfranchised communities tip the balance of power in the next decade? 

Join the Organizing Apprenticeship Project and the Bonner Program for important conversation and skill-building around the tools of organizing and learn how local organizers are building towards racial equity. The OAP is an organization that works to advance racial, cultural, social and economic justice in Minnesota through organizer and leadership training, policy research and strategic convening work and they are excited to build with Augsburg's student body. 

Session two, "Racial Justice – Advancing Equity Movement," will be Thursday, November 13th from 5:30-7:30pm.

The purpose of all A.A. group meetings is for members to "share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism." Open Speaker meetings are available to anyone interested in Alcoholics Anonymous' program of recovery from alcoholism. Nonalcoholics are welcome to attend open meetings as observers."

Personal Document Destruction Event Tomorrow

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to bring their personal confidential documents to a FREE Shred Event sponsored by Augsburg Facilities Management. Bring your material (two boxes or bags maximum, please) to the Shred Right truck parked between Sverdrup and Lindell Library tomorrow (Wednesday, October 22), between 8:30-9:30 a.m. You must present your documents at this time; I am sorry we cannot offer early pick-up and storage of your personal documents. If you are not available at this time, it is your choice if you wish to entrust one of your coworkers to bring the documents to the truck for you. An Augsburg ID will be required, as we unfortunately cannot make this a community event.

Last call to gather your materials! We can't give advice about what records you can destroy, but do your own research to figure out what you can get rid of from your home desk or file cabinet!

On Wednesday, October 22, Becky Siekmeier of the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) will give the presentation, "Paid Internships in STEM, Hands-on Opportunities in Minnesota Business", and answer questions about the SciTechsperience internship program.

This paid internship program connects talented college students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines to rewarding hands-on opportunities in dynamic Minnesota businesses. Augsburg students Sabrina Feister and David Fowler have each participated in SciTechsperience internships and will be present to share their experiences and help with the Q & A portion.

Eligible students must be:
* In good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
* A college junior or senior (60 credits completed)
* At least 18 years of age
* Currently enrolled and pursuing a qualifying science, technology,
engineering or math degree.

Augsburg majors that are eligible include biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, management information science (MIS), and physics (including students doing pre-engineering). This presentation is hosted by the mathematics department but open to all interested students, staff and faculty. Combine Peace Corps/VISTA with Grad School - TODAY

Are you interested in combining graduate school with service in either Peace Corps or VISTA? Michigan Tech offers programs in 11 departments (Biology; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Environmental and Energy Policy; Forestry; Geology; Industrial Archaeology; Mechanical Engineering; Rhetoric, Theory and Culture (humanities and social sciences); and Science Education) that combine practical service opportunities with time on campus. Most students spend one academic year on campus, then either two years in Peace Corps or one year in VISTA, followed by one more semester back on campus. Some programs accept students from any undergraduate academic discipline.

Seminary and Divinity School Day - October 28

Are you considering the idea of theological graduate school education? Is there a possibility you might want to become a pastor, a professor of religion, or work in a church-related vocation?

On Tuesday, October 28, gather with your peers for Seminary and Divinity School Day, a special day of discernment. The day includes several thought-provoking breakout sessions and the opportunity to meet with representatives from 17 top-notch seminaries and divinity schools from around the nation, from multiple denominational affiliations.
The day will also feature a keynote luncheon address - "Where Next? Vocation as Path" by Marty Stortz, Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation.

By attending Seminary and Divinity School Day, you will also have the chance to visit with students from other regional undergraduate schools who have similar questions and interests. Meet at 1 p.m. in Oren Gateway Center Lobby. Film Festival Submissions Needed by 10/24

Art Club is seeking film submissions for "A Very Spooky Film Festival" which will be held on October 28th from 7-8 p.m. in the Sateren Auditorium.

Films should be 3-5 minutes submitted in a MOV format and delivered on a dvd or flashdrive. Submissions may be left in the Old Main basement dropbox, by October 24th.

Festival participants will cast votes for favorite films and prizes will be awarded to winners.

Lehmann and Hensley Present Workshop

Dr. Barbara Lehmann and Dr. Melissa Hensley of the Augsburg College Social Work Department, along with Ashley Trudell, MSW, of St. Joseph's Health Center, presented a workshop at the annual Mental Health Education Project conference at Temple Israel in South Minneapolis. Titled "From Wounded Healer to Healing Healer," the workshop focused on reducing the stigma of mental illness among mental health professionals and promoting healthy boundaries and self-care for mental health providers who have a mental illness diagnosis.

Auggies Participate in a 24-Hour Math Contest

This past weekend, math majors Tim Crowell, Cory Haight-Nali, and Duane Pomerleau represented Augsburg College in the 6th Wisconsin Mathematical Modeling Challenge, a 24-hour contest held in La Crosse, WI. Competing against teams from La Crosse, Eau Claire, Stevens Point (all WI), and Bemidji State, the team members showed resolve and resilience, staying up for most of the 24 hours and working hard on the assigned problem. While not finishing first (only the winner was announced), great fun was had by all! Way to go, Auggies!
