Come Early & Come Often to the WL

In just over one week, tutors in the Writing Lab have conducted more than 100 sessions with Augsburg students and are ready for another record-breaking year. One piece of advice: come early to the shifts whenever possible. These are the times tutors are available (street level of Lindell Library, left of the circulation desk):

Monday: 11:10 a.m. - 1:40 p.m. and 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12:30 - 3 p.m., 3:30 - 6 p.m., and 7:30 -10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3:30 - 6 p.m. and 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 12:30 - 3 p.m., 3:30 - 6 p.m., and 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Friday: 4:30 - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 5 - 8 p.m.

Model UN Applications Now Being Accepted

Augsburg College's Model United Nations Delegation is now accepting applications for the 2014 National Model UN Conference, to be held in New York City, this coming March 30 - April 3. The program and club is open to any student at Augsburg who is interested in world politics, diplomacy, or the work of international organizations; however, space on the delegation is limited and students most demonstrate knowledge and strong interest in international relations and the work of the UN.

Those selected for the delegation must enroll in the Model UN course (POL 368) in the Spring term, and pay a $400 lab fee, which covers the cost of the conference, travel, and hotel in New York. More information about the conference can be found at http://www.nmun.org/nmun_ny.html Applications can be obtained by contacting Prof. Underhill (underhil@augsburg.edu) and returned via email, or hard copy to Memorial 112B, by Monday, Nov. 11.

Student Phoners Needed in Admissions

The Admissions Office is looking for current students to work part-time evening hours contacting prospective Auggies! We are seeking enthusiastic callers who will reach out to incoming students and families to talk about applying to the college, visiting campus, and enrollment events. This is a great chance to use your communication skills as well as bring attention to many of the great opportunities Augsburg has to offer.

Interested applicants should apply online through the Augsburg HR employment website. Hours for this position are Monday through Thursday evenings from 5-9 p.m. Shifts are flexible, but you must be available at least 4-6 hours during the calling week. Applications must be submitted by Friday, September 27 and interviews will be scheduled shortly after.

Here are two more introductions of Scholastic Connections Scholars for 2013-14.

Demaris Montoya - Continuing Scholar
My name is Demaris Montoya. I am from Minneapolis and I'm Mexican American. I am a junior this year majoring in international relations. I do not have a career goal in mind but I'm working on it. A general idea is working with people and helping to improve their quality of life or work towards protecting our environment.

I am currently a member of ALAS and looking to join other ethnic student groups on campus.

During this past year Scholastic Connections has given me the opportunity to get to know other students at Augsburg. SC has also made me feel more connected with Augsburg. And of course last but not least I really enjoyed getting to know my mentor, Ali Pickens.

For this year I'm looking forward to spending more time with my mentor and getting to know the other SC scholars and mentors.

Vanessa Cuate-Sandoval - New Scholar
My name is Vanessa Cuate-Sandoval and I am a junior. I'm planning on majoring in Management Information Systems. I don't have a specific career choice just yet, but being a business analyst or an information technology consultant both sound ideal and interesting.

This past year was a very rewarding year, for I was one of the officers for ALAS, Augsburg Latin American Students. Being able to hold such leadership position made me grow much more as a person, not only because of the responsibilities it came with, but for the pure passion and strive to continue to see ALAS grow and progress. Being able to be part of the accomplishments ALAS made this past year was an amazing and prideful experience.

Although I am not in the board of ALAS this year, I plan on continuing to support and be involved in ALAS, but not only ALAS, but also the other ethnic student organizations.

Being part of Scholastic Connections, what I would love to accomplish this year is to make connections and relationships with other scholars, my mentor, and to create social networks. I can also learn a thing or two about time management skills!

Be an Auggie Flu Fighter

Students stay healthy during the flu season and get your flu shot on Monday 9/30/13 from 12 - 3 p.m. The MN Visiting Nurse Association will be on campus in OGC 100 providing flu shots for all interested students and any faculty or staff that may not have had the opportunity to get a flu shot from the Homeland Health flu shot clinic.

Most insurances are accepted or you can pay $29 cash or check. If using insurance, please be sure to bring your insurance card. No appointments are necessary so you can walk-in and get your flu shot when it is convenient for your schedule.

Women, War and Drones

Women, War and Drones: "An Afghan Woman Speaks Out" will be held at Augsburg
Tuesday, October 15

Malalai Joya is a human rights activist and recipient of numerous international awards. Shehas been called "the bravest woman in Afghanistan." She was suspended by the Afghan Parliament in 2007 for her criticism of the warlord and drug barons.

Co-sponsored by: Department of Political Science, Anne Pederson Women's Resource Center, and the Sabo Center for Citizenship and Learning and many other off-campus groups.

North Star STEM Industry Visit to 3M

The North Star STEM 3M Industry Tour will take place on October 10, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to tour the 3M Innovation Center located just outside of Saint Paul. The program will include Innovation Center tours, a presentation by a VP, and information about employment opportunities/internships, among other sessions.

Transportation will be provided and this is a great opportunity to learn about 3M's Tech Aid program (paid internship opportunities).

Matthew Beckman, Students Present at NSS Kickoff

At last night's North Star STEM Kickoff, biology professor Matthew Beckman and Raesean Sneed were presenters on a undergraduate research panel. Raesean, Mahelet Maru, Rico Barrozo and Promise Okeke presented posters describing their summer research experiences. Judy Johnson of our admission department represented Augsburg to potential STEM transfers from community colleges.

Raesean and Rico are both McNair Scholars who worked with Matthew Beckman, Mahalet's work was supported by URGO and North Star STEM and supervised by Ron Fedie, and Promise was a summer research intern at John's Hopkins University.

The North Star STEM Kickoff was held at the University of Minnesota and draws an audience of approximately 200 students from Alliance institutions.

The mission of the North Star STEM Alliance is to double the number of Minnesota's underrepresented minorities receiving bachelor's degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. See www.augsburg.edu/stem/ for more information.
