Research On Campus Sustainability & Democracy

A note of explanation for what some have found to be my puzzling presence on campus while on sabbatical. My research for this fall is examining three aspects of higher education: democratic practice and citizen education, environmental sustainability, and questions of financial viability and economic equity, using Augsburg as a case study. This work springs from the range of issues we are currently grappling with on campus (but which are by no means unique to us), and is intended to produce a work that will be of use to our community and others facing similar challenges. I will be gathering information on these issues through field study, interviews, and surveys and hope to involve as many people across campus as possible. Anyone interested in participating in discussion, interviews, or as a contributing author of the work is welcome to contact me via email (underhil@augsburg.edu). I would particularly like to hear if there is specific information relating to these topics that you would find useful to include in the final product.

Feeling at the End of Your Rope?

Do you feel like you are at the end of your rope and need someone to talk to? Did you know that you can get FREE confidential counseling right here on campus? That's right! As an Augsburg student you can get up to ten free sessions each academic year to meet with a professional counselor. The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion has several counselors to meet with you.

Counseling is a great place to go when you need to talk to someone who is objective and who may be able to help you come up with new ways to work on things you want to work on. Counseling is a conversation about things you want to talk about. CCHP is a welcoming, calming place with offices in a small house on campus. We are located at 628 21st Avenue (first house on the corner of 21st & 7th across from the Anderson/Luther parking lot). Everything at CCHP is all confidential. Monday, September 30th, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. OR
Tuesday, October 1st, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Call-back auditions will be held Thursday, October 3rd from 7 - 10 p.m. Please plan on attending the whole session.

The Augsburg Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for its main stage production, Antigonick by Sophokles, Anne Carson's translation/adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone, directed by Martha Johnson.

Auditions will be held in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, in Foss Center, Monday, September 30th from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday, October 1st from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. An audition sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the Atrium of the Foss Center.

All Augsburg students are welcome to audition! Copies of Antigonick have been placed on reserve in the library, and audition monologues are available at the Theater department desk in Foss Center. Please choose and carefully prepare 3 monologues from those provided. It is recommended that you read the entire play in order to have a sense of the tone of the piece and the nature of the characters.

- Please arrive at the audition site at least 10 minutes before your scheduled audition time. Those who arrive after their scheduled time may not be allowed to audition.
- Please wear comfortable, business-casual attire to auditions. (No jeans, flip-flops, T-shirts, sweatpants, crop tops, halter tops, high heels, etc.)
- Please bring to auditions a complete list of all conflicts you may have with the rehearsal and performance schedule including work, classes, social commitments (such as weddings, anniversaries, etc.) and ensemble performances. Actors should declare all known conflicts at the time of the general audition. Rehearsals for this production run into the Spring semester, so please bring/be aware of your schedule for BOTH semesters when coming to auditions. Additionally, rehearsals will be held January 6th - 11th, 2014, a week before Spring classes begin. Attendance at these rehearsals is mandatory.

Rehearsals will begin November 11th, 2013 and performance dates are January 31st - February 9th.

Description of Antigonick:
In her highly innovative translations of ancient plays, acclaimed poet Anne Carson "combines contemporary language with the traditional structures and rhetoric of Greek tragedy, opening up [ancient tales] . . .to a modern audience. . ." In Antigonick, Carson emphasizes the importance of time-and timing-in tragedy, by introducing a silent character, Nick, who is always on stage measuring things while the events of the play unfold. Antigone is "here given an entirely fresh language and presentation."

Keeping Track of Auggies

Newlyweds Sonnack & Halverson Support CSBR

Augsburg alumni Evelyn Sonnack Halverson and William H. Halverson just returned from their honeymoon to Norway and England. Sitting beside each other on a couch, holding hands, they finish each other's sentences as if they have known each other for decades. And they have.

Evie's first husband, Paul G. Sonnack Jr., and Bill Halverson were Augsburg College faculty colleagues, overlapping there from 1959 to 1967. The two couples were good friends, so close in fact that the Sonnacks were baptismal sponsors for Kay, one of the Halversons' five daughters.

Recently Evie and Bill each decided to make naming gifts, in memory of their first spouses, for faculty offices in Augsburg's new Center for Science, Business, and Religion.

Life insurance gift makes Paul G. Sonnack Jr. faculty office possible
