Employee Training Series
We are pleased to announce the upcoming employee training, "Civil Discourse: Strategies for Communicating in a Diverse Workplace."
Augsburg is committed to providing development opportunities for our employees that enable each of us to better serve this community. The sessions are open to all faculty and staff at no cost. There are four opportunities to participate in this course.

The training will cover the following aspects of communication:
Differing definitions of respect
Common communication break-downs
Characteristics of tactful and diplomatic communicators
A self-assessment of various communication styles
Tips for adjusting ones own style of communication
A communication Action Plan for use during times of difficult or problematic communication

You will then be directed to the appointment scheduler tool, where you can select the date and time you wish to participate. The sessions have a limited number of seats available, so register early. The sessions will be facilitated by Jeffrey Cookson, Organizational Development Manager and Global Diversity Inclusion Specialist from MRA Trusight. URGO Academic Year Research Grants
Each fall, URGO offers $1,000 research grants for students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and can be found under the "Applications and Forms" tab of the URGO web page at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/
To apply, complete the electronic application with your faculty mentor and have them email it to urgo@augsburg.edu. Grants go quickly so apply as soon as possible.
Writing Lab Open
The wait is over! The Augsburg College Writing Lab is now open for the current academic year. Last year, tutors in the Lab conducted 2,500 sessions with Augsburg students, working on a wide variety of writing assignments at various stages of completion. The Lab is located in Lindell Library, ground floor, to the left of the circulation desk. Students are welcome to come with a hard copy of their work and professors are able to contact Professor Swanson if they would like a tutor to visit their classes to provide further information.
Hours for the year are as follows:
Monday: 11:10 a.m. - 1:40 p.m. and 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12:30 - 3 p.m., 3:30 - 6 p.m., and 7:30 -10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3:30 - 6 p.m. and 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 12:30 - 3 p.m., 3:30 - 6 p.m., and 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Friday: 4:30 - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 5 - 8 p.m.

Changes to Progress Reports
Important changes are being made to our process for submitting Progress Reports. Our existing system of submitting an alert at any point in the term has been replaced with a Midterm Academic Progress Report, which is a key feature of a new software system called AgileAdvisor. This is a streamlined and centralized point to provide formalized feedback to students on their progress.
Undoubtedly, there will be instances where faculty are concerned about a student and wish to request support, outreach, and guidance before the midpoint of the term. This continues to be available to faculty using the individual Academic Progress Report. Staff will respond to individual reports and take appropriate action based on the nature of the report.
Midterm Academic Progress Report: In October, all fall term instructors will receive an emailed link to the Midterm Academic Progress Report. All instructors will provide feedback on the students in their courses at this time. The information provided in the Midterm Progress Report will be gathered in the AgileAdvisor system, assigned to specific academic support staff, and monitored until resolved.
Individual Academic Progress Reports: Faculty may enlist the help of staff advisors in addressing academic, attendance, and/or behavioral concerns related to students when direct interactions have not resolved the situation. To do this, faculty can submit an Academic Progress Report through class lists in Records and Registration by clicking on the "Prepare Report" button next to a student in the class list. Faculty will need the student's email address to lookup her/his record, and can enter the relevant information in the form provided. Once submitted, the information will be reviewed and may be sent on to the student, depending on the nature of the alert. The alerts submitted can be tracked and assigned to specific staff advisors who will determine any necessary action.

ABO Annual Outing to Target Field - Next Tues 9/24
ABO (The Augsburg Business Organization) group invites you to our annual outing to see the Minnesota Twins at 7 p.m., Tuesday, September 24. Come see the Twins take on the Detroit Tigers, meet some fellow Augsburg Business Students and get a chance to cheer on the Twins as they play some outdoor baseball! Get up close to the action, take a break from studying and join us at Target Field!
Tickets for our great seating in the first 3 rows of the Right Field Overlook are only $5 for Augsburg Students. Students may also buy one ticket for a non-Augsburg guest for $10 each. ABO events are open to all majors so bring your friends, roommates, etc. RSVP early to isaacson@augsburg.edu as we have a bit smaller group of tickets this fall. Details on payment collection and ticket distribution will be sent to those attending later this week.
Spanish Conversation Meets Thursday
Looking for a chance to improve your Spanish conversation skills? Then we've got just the thing for you - Spanish Conversation group! Please join us as we gather to chat in Spanish, laugh and have a bit of fun. From beginning to advanced, all levels are welcome! We meet every Thursday in the Riverside Room, 2nd floor Christensen, from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Signs will be posted. Join us for 10 minutes or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Free Lockers Available for Commuter Students
Campus Activities and Orientation provides free lockers for students (Day, WEC, and Graduate) who commute to campus during the academic year. Lockers are located on the Ground and 2nd Levels of Science Building.
These lockers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. To request your locker for the academic year, please print out, complete, and sign the form below and turn it into the Christensen Center Welcome Desk OR Michael Grewe in Christensen Center Room 1D (located on the ground floor in the "Auggie's Nest").

Event Announcements
State of the College Event - Tomorrow
Faculty members, staff, and students are invited to attend the annual State of the College meeting tomorrow, Sept. 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel. The State of the College address will cover year-end accomplishments for 2012-2013, fall 2013 enrollment, and an overview of the strategic work launched by the Augsburg Board of Regents this past year.
If you need to connect to the meeting from an off-site location, see the live video stream access information on the State of the College 2013 page, in the College Reports section of Inside Augsburg.
For those unable to participate in the event or livestream, the slides and an audio replay of the address will be posted to the State of the College 2013 page within a few business days of the event.

.There are five days until the start of Augsburgs week long Homecoming celebration, September 22-28! The week begins with the Baseball Alumni Game and Dugout Dedication at 2 p.m. at the Parade Stadium, and ends with the Taste of Augsburg on Saturday, September 28th from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m.
TOMORROW is the last day for student groups to submit as a vendor and be listed on the program. Submissions will be accepted until next Wednesday, but will not be included in the publications about the event.

North Star STEM Hosts GEM GRAD Lab
GEM Getting Ready for Advance Degrees (GRAD) Laboratory (Sponsored by North Star STEM and held at the University of Minnesota)

Please join us for the GEM GRAD Lab. The GRAD Lab is a fun, engaging (and free!) symposium where participants, science and engineering undergraduates, get full information on the importance of graduate school and what is needed to successfully gain admittance with financial support. Speakers range from current graduate students to University faculty and senior administrators. They are selected from diverse communities and disciplines to present on the following topics:

GRAD Lab encourages young people to consider graduate engineering or science education and applying for the GEM fellowship. Jack Osberg '62 Makes Legacy Gift to CSBR
Former Augsburg College head football coach Jack Osberg '62 and his wife, Nina, created a legacy gift for the Center for Science, Business, and Religion.
"Augsburg has touched our lives. I'm a graduate. Nina is an honorary Auggie. Three of our six children graduated from here: Peter '93, Jamie '95 and Anne '01. I got to work in my dream job as head football coach. We want to help, so we named Augsburg as a beneficiary of our retirement plan."

I have a Medium "Firmness" Twin Tempur-Pedic mattress still in the box. I do not have a box spring for it; just the mattress.
