Inclusiveness Reading Circle: Whistling Vivaldi

Facilitators: Joyce Miller & Matt Maruggi
Schedule: 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Thursdays (October 17, November 7, December 12)
Augsburg Room

Nothing explains this tour de force better than the title itself, which refers to the revealing story of a young black man who realizes that he can defuse fears of white people by whistling melodies from Vivaldi. With this and countless other examples drawn from the groundbreaking research, social psychologist Claude Steele sheds new light on how pervasive stereotypes can actually influence behavior and performance, especially in the educational setting, and how these stereotypes left unexamined can perpetuate themselves.

Faculty and staff may sign up for the Reading Circle and pick up a book in the Department of Nursing, SC 116. Participants are also invited to have lunch in the cafeteria courtesy of the Batalden Endowment.

Schedule of reading
October 17, pp. 1-62
November 7, pp. 63-133
December 12, pp. 134-219

Mark your calendars for the upcoming convocation!

THE BERNHARD M. CHRISTENSEN SYMPOSIUM

Tuesday, October 1, 11 a.m.

Krista Tippett, host/producer of On Being, American Public Media
Einstein's God: Revisiting Science and Religion in a New Century
See http://www.augsburg.edu/convo/christensen-symposium/.

The following is taken from Tippet's introduction to her book, Einstein's God. "The science-religion "debate" is unwinnable, and has led us astray. To insist that science and religion speak the same language, or draw the same conclusions, is to miss the point of both of these pursuits of cohesive knowledge and underlying truth. To create a competition between them, in terms of relevance or rightness, is self-defeating. Both science and religion are set to animate this century with new vigor. This will happen whether their practitioners are in dialogue or not. But the dialogue that is possible - and that has developed organically, below the journalistic and political radar- is mutually illuminating and lush with promise."

Exploring Your Leadership Style: Oct. 10 Workshop

Date: Thursday, October 10, 2013
Time: 5:30 p.m. social time with refreshments; 6 - 7:30 p.m. workshop
Location: Kennedy Center, Room 303
Presenter: Tom Morgan

Who should attend? Individuals and/or teams who want to enhance their leadership skills and effectiveness.

Discover your information processing preferences through I Opt. I Opt is a leadership assessment tool used in professional development that will help you understand how you gather, process and act on the information that is all around you. This information shapes the way you approach leadership. To effectively lead others, it's helpful to understand the strengths and vulnerabilities of your own approach.

Prior to the workshop, participants will complete a short online survey (fewer than ten minutes). The results of this survey will be used to generate a personalized report that each participant will receive at the workshop. These Advanced Leadership Reports identify information processing preferences, providing insights into issues that people bring with them everywhere they go. Tom Morgan, a certified I Opt interpreter, will explain the I Opt model and help you get the most out of your individual report.

Registration
To participate in the workshop, please RSVP by e-mail to Patty Park at parkp@augsburg.edu by Monday, October 7. You will receive an e-mail reply with directions for taking the I Opt survey. You must be present at the workshop to receive the survey results. Space is limited, so register soon.

The I Opt survey and report has a value of $25.00, but we are able to offer it for $10.00 per participant in combination with the workshop. Your $10 payment will be collected at the beginning of the event.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Steve '71 and Catherine Larson Lead Agre Challenge

Do you remember sitting in high school with your eyes roving over items pinned on a bulletin board? For Dr. Steve E. Larson '71 that moment during a high school chemistry class in River Falls, Wis., changed his life forever.

The bulletin board announced chemistry scholarships at Augsburg College provided by Dr. Courtland Agre, then chair of Augsburg's Chemistry Department. Larson decided to apply for one, and he got it.

"This scholarship, given from Dr. Agre's personal funds, was quite an advantage for me," Larson says. "I was from a poor family and going to a private college wouldn't have been possible without a scholarship. I had a great experience at Augsburg College, and then went on to medical school. I have been looking for ways to give back to the college since that time, especially honoring Dr. Agre."
