Public Safety and Facilities Announcements
Spring Break Building Hours
Spring break starts Monday, March 14 and continues to Friday, March 18. While Augsburg remains open throughout break, Public Safety will secure most buildings at 5 p.m. Buildings with scheduled events (through Event and Conference Planning), such as MBA cohort meetings, will remain open for the event. Oren Gateway will remain open until at least 6:30 p.m. and often later for scheduled events.
Please note that the Library and Athletics publish their own building schedules. Those facilities will open and close according to their published schedules.
If the space you need is locked, and you have a legitimate reason to be in there, please call x1717 and an officer will do their best to assist you. Please have photo ID and show it to the officer. Some officers will be working different shifts over the break and may not have had the opportunity to meet you.
Science Hall Floor Restoration
Starting on Monday, March 14th, (the first day of spring break), Facilities Management will be undertaking a project that will last throughout the week. On Monday, March 14th, we will be closing the northwest entrance to Science Hall along with the Sverdrup /Science link hallway adjacent to the Science Hall elevator on first floor. The reason for the closing is that we are doing restorative floor work in this area and it requires us to close these access points. These access points will open again upon completion of the work. The estimated completion date is Tuesday, March15th, in the afternoon, but may be as late as Wednesday afternoon, March 16th.
The remainder of the work will be completed in the evenings by the custodial projects crew and will include taking up the old wax and applying several new layers of wax to the floor. This custodial work will not interfere with normal work flow, but traffic in hallways should be kept to a minimum to allow proper curing time for the new wax. Heavy carts and other hard-wheel objects should be kept off the floor and foot traffic kept to a minimum.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us improve the appearance of the flooring in the Science Hall.

Portfolio Workshop
For Faculty Preparing for CTP Reviews
May 13, 9:00-3:00 pm, OGC 100
The purpose of this workshop is to help candidates for any type of Committee on Tenure and Promotion (CTP) review to determine the various forms of evidence that can help build a strong portfolio. The focus is on evidence of teaching, but the strategies directly apply to scholarship and service as well. This workshop is not designed to replace departmental guidance and advice nor is it an analysis of the Faculty Handbook language as it applies to an individual. It does not represent the views of the CTP committee; rather, this is a long standing CTL workshop to help support candidates' preparation and is one that many colleagues have found useful. The workshop is facilitated by Diane Pike and Su Doree. Participants are encouraged to form groups to review each other's portfolio materials and provide feedback and support following the workshop.
If you plan to attend this session, please rsvp to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)
Call for Proposals International Travel Grants
Applications Due March 30
Purpose
The purpose of travel grants is to support faculty involvement in professional associations and to support collaboration with our international programs and partners. The expectation is that faculty will share their scholarship activities, remain current on the scholarship work in their professions, and develop relationships with others in their profession and in the Augsburg international network.
Description and Eligibility
In addition to the standard professional travel grants, there are two competitive awards for international travel:
International professional travel Two grants of up to $2000 are awarded to full-time faculty for international travel to present at a professional conference.
The Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant - Two grants of up to $2500 are awarded to faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaboration with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitates internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.
Egypt Study Abroad Program Summer 2011: Canceled
The Office of International Programs staff, including Augsburg Abroad, has been monitoring the situation in Egypt carefully, in light of the events taking place there and our planned faculty-led program to Egypt in May. Since the safety and security of students and faculty studying abroad is our highest priority, we have decided to cancel this program.
We made this decision for two primary reasons. First, the U.S. State Department's Travel Warning for Egypt remains in effect as of today. Although most demonstrations in Egypt have ended, the situation remains unpredictable and sometimes violent; in addition, unrest elsewhere in the region has had a destabilizing effect. Given these circumstances, Office of International Programs staff do not expect the Travel Warning to be lifted before program departure.
Second, Augsburg Abroad staff were informed this week that the group's flight to Cairo on Continental Airlines was canceled due to the ongoing unrest. Although flights on other airlines are currently available, costs are higher and there is a strong possibility that these will also be canceled in the coming weeks.
Students accepted into the program will not pay any cancellation costs. Those who received scholarships for this program have the option of transferring those funds to either the AugCore Mexico or the Social Change and Development in Southern Africa programs this summer. See http://www.augsburg.edu/global/summer/ for more details on these programs.
Any students interested in finding other programs to participate in this summer should attend one of the special advising meetings set up for them over the next couple days.
Thursday, March 10 4-5pm
Friday, March 11 2:30-3:30 and 4-5pm
Please contact the Augsburg Abroad office at abroad@augsburg.edu to explore other study abroad options.

Scholarly Writing Retreat
Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011
The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.
Comments from last year's attendees:
"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."
The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.
