Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Portfolio Workshop

For Faculty Preparing for CTP Reviews
May 13, 9:00-3:00 pm, OGC 100

The purpose of this workshop is to help candidates for any type of Committee on Tenure and Promotion (CTP) review to determine the various forms of evidence that can help build a strong portfolio. The focus is on evidence of teaching, but the strategies directly apply to scholarship and service as well. This workshop is not designed to replace departmental guidance and advice nor is it an analysis of the Faculty Handbook language as it applies to an individual. It does not represent the views of the CTP committee; rather, this is a long standing CTL workshop to help support candidates' preparation and is one that many colleagues have found useful. The workshop is facilitated by Diane Pike and Su Doree. Participants are encouraged to form groups to review each other's portfolio materials and provide feedback and support following the workshop.

If you plan to attend this session, RSVP to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)

Keeping Track of Auggies

Matt Butler '98 Patents New Lawn Game

Sometime after Matt Butler graduated from Augsburg ('98, Physics), he found that his mind had "a lot of time to wander," especially while making long flights in the Mideast as an airman in the U.S. Air Force. Often, Matt would toss around ideas for new lawn games, remembering the joys of all the lawn games he played as a kid "up at the lake" during Minnesota summers. During one of those flights, he came up with the idea for Rollors®, an "exciting game of skill and chance"—a kind of horseshoe/bocce ball combo. He decided to find a way to market his new variation on an old idea.

After obtaining a utility patent on the game, he eventually found someone to make a prototype for him, and then set up a website, printed up T-shirts, and went into production—thanks to the skills and expertise of several local craftspeople, many of them veterans. Though it has been suggested that Matt could produce the Rollors® sets more inexpensively if they were made of plastic, he says the quality of the hardwood maple set is important to him—most likely an attitude related to his military job, which has involved inspecting and evaluating new combat equipment. He has been very deliberate about providing work for veterans, and about producing Rollors® in the U.S.—in red, white, and blue packaging, of course. Matt reports that over 25,000 games have already been sold in the last six months, and that it will be featured in the spring on the QVC network. More info on Matt's game can be found at www.rollors.net.

Auggie Athletics

Fornicoia to be Inducted into Hall of Fame

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2011/3/8/wres030811.aspx?path=wrestling

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College wrestling alumnus Nick Fornicoia '93 will be inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Thursday evening in La Crosse, Wis., site of this year's NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships.

Fornicoia will be the fifth Auggie to be named to the Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame, joining wrestlers Steve Gliva '85, John Beatty '90, Gary Kroells '93 and Dan Lewandowski '97, along with former head coach Jeff Swenson '79.

He will be honored at a ceremony at the La Crosse Center on Thursday at 6 p.m. Joining Fornicoia in the induction class of 2011 are wrestlers Zack Kallai of Case Western Reserve (Ohio) and Jason Ott of Wisconsin-La Crosse, along with former coaches Dave Kemmy of Roger Williams (R.I.), Steve DeVries of Cornell (Iowa) and Gene Nighman of Cortland State (N.Y.), as well as contributor Terry Shockley of Augustana (Ill.).

Fornicoia earned All-America honors three times as an Auggie, winning the 118-pound national title in 1993. He finished fourth nationally at 118 in 1991 and eighth at 118 in 1992. Fornicoia finished 39-9-1 his sophomore season, 38-6-1 his junior season and 37-6 in his senior campaign as a three-year starter for the Auggies. His career record was 136-25-2. Fornicoia was a part of Augsburg squads that won two national titles (1991, 1993) and had two national runner-up finishes (1990, 1992).

Fornicoia proved to be one of the keys in Augsburg earning its 1993 team national title, the second team title for the Auggies in program history. Entering the final round of the national meet, Augsburg trailed Wartburg in the team race, but Fornicoia's 5-4 win over Wartburg's Zane Braggs in the 118-pound national championship match put Augsburg ahead to stay.

He also earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in both 1992 and 1993, as part of Auggie squads that won conference crowns each of his four seasons. As a team, Augsburg went 57-3 in dual meets in Fornicoia's career, including part of a 65-match winning streak that spanned from 1988 to 1992.

Fornicoia was also a member of Augsburg's cross country team for two seasons. As a high school wrestler at Richfield High School, he was a state titlist in 1989 and a two-time state tournament qualifier.

After graduation, Fornicoia served Augsburg for several seasons as an assistant coach. He was an English education major at Augsburg. For the past 14 years, he has served as a teacher and wrestling assistant coach at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minn.

The NWCA Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame has honored NCAA Division III wrestlers, coaches and contributors since 1989. Augsburg has been an NCAA Division III member since 1983. To be considered for Hall of Fame induction, wrestlers must be three-time All-Americans or two-time national champions.
