Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Hagfors Center Construction Update

As the summer break winds down and the campus prepares for the start of the fall semester next week, it is important to remind everyone about safety in and around the construction site. You can help keep the construction area safe by ensuring that no unauthorized personnel enter the construction site at any time. Only authorized personnel--wearing hard hats and safety vests--should enter the site. We appreciate everyone's help keeping the construction area safe for workers and the campus community.

A summary of expected construction activities for this week is posted on http://www.augsburg.edu/hagforscenter/construction-project-updates . Today's post includes the following:

[1] Photo of the construction site from Friday, August 19
[2] Concrete pours commencing for the third floor
[3] Street closure on 21st Avenue South (August 22-25)
[4] Continued column construction
[5] Utility pole removal
[6] Work on the west side of Oren Gateway Center

Please watch Amail and posted signage for activities that may impact pedestrian or vehicle traffic on campus. To subscribe to regular emails about the Hagfors Center construction, go to http://www.augsburg.edu/hagforscenter and sign up for email updates.

Teaching and Learning

As You're Working on Your Syllabus...

... you might want to have a look at this very short article in the Chronicle of Higher Ed:

http://chronicle.com/blogs/profhacker/estimating-student-workload-for-your-courses/62515?cid=wb&utm_source=wb&utm_medium=en&elqTrackId=0f2090a509a04b5b8166984a0c6faa73&elq=0a73e11b01304172896f01108f874178&elqaid=10136&elqat=1&elqCampaignId=3778
There's a link to the workload estimator. It's a blunt instrument, but it is also eye-opening. It will certainly raise questions about what it means to give students the time they need to read the materials we assign for comprehension and to write effectively about them.
