Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Hagfors Construction Continues as Classes Resume

Fall semester classes resume this week. With students back on campus, it's important to remind everyone about the importance of safety in and around the construction site. You can help keep the construction area safe by ensuring that no unauthorized personnel enter the construction site at any time. Only authorized personnel--wearing hard hats and safety vests--should enter the site. We appreciate everyone's help keeping the construction area safe for workers and the campus community.

A summary of expected construction activities for this week is posted on http://www.augsburg.edu/hagforscenter/construction-project-updates . Today's post includes the following:

[1] A photo of the construction site at sunset Sunday, August 28
[2] Third-floor concrete pours
[3] Fourth-floor formwork
[4] Completion of utility work on South 6th Street
[5] Continued column construction
[6] Completion of utility work on 21st Avenue South and west of Oren Gateway Center
[7] Mechanical piping installation in the basement.

Please watch Amail and posted signage for activities that may impact pedestrian or vehicle traffic on campus. To subscribe to regular emails about the Hagfors Center construction, go to http://www.augsburg.edu/hagforscenter and sign up for email updates.

The Writing Lab Moodle Site Has Moved

The Writing Lab site has moved from the Moodle Course site to Moodle Community.

https://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodlecommunity/course/view.php?id=934

A number of benefits are realized by hosting the site in the new location. These include having one location for multiple years of data, a persistent site which does not need to be recreated each year, persistent enrollment so faculty will remain enrolled for continual site access. Faculty enrolled in the site last year have already been enrolled in the Writing Lab course.

Film Festivals & Film Production

Hey everyone, I'm looking for people interested in making movies. I want to get a group of students together that would enjoy filming for fun and later submitting these movies to film festivals

Being a film major isn't a requirement, just having interest in the production process in enough!

There are dozens of film festivals held in Minnesota annually, and hundreds outside of MN, so send an email out to braverme@augsburg.edu and let me know if you're interested!

Congratulations to Joe Underhill

Dear faculty and staff colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Joe Underhill, Associate Professor of Political Science and a member of the Augsburg faculty since 1998, has been appointed Program Director for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum (NPPF). In this new role, Joe will oversee NPPF content and programming, work in partnership with Augsburg faculty colleagues to more fully integrate the Forum into the curriculum and our students' experience, supervise Augsburg's NPPF staff and interns, organize year-round programming and dialogue sessions, strengthen connections with community and academic partners, assist with fundraising, supervise the Peace Scholars program, and enhance connections between NPPF, an array of relationships between Norway and the College, and global education (CGEE).

Joe brings impressive credentials and expertise to this position. In addition to 18 years of active involvement with the Forum, Joe's undergraduate work (UC-Berkeley) focused on nuclear arms control negotiations, his master's degree (San Francisco State U) on the UN's role in conflict resolution, and his PhD (University of Michigan) on the cultural and psychological dimensions of decision-making in times of conflict and war. His book, Death and the Statesman: The Culture and Psychology of U.S. Leaders during War, was published in 2001. Author of numerous articles and a frequent presenter at local and national conferences, Joe's current research focuses on “Education as Empowerment: Democratic practice on campus and in the classroom.” As co-chair of the Nobel Peace Prize Youth Forum, Joe worked with various Nobel laureates, including Jimmy Carter, Martti Ahtisaari, and Wangari Maathai.

At Augsburg, Joe has taught courses in political science, environmental science, and international relations. He helped create the Peace and Global Studies program, the Environmental Studies Program, and the Model UN Program at Augsburg. He has contributed extensively to the shared work of the College through (among many other things) service on Faculty Senate, the Admissions Committee, the Faculty Compensation Committee, the Governance Task Force, and a term as chair of the Political Science Department. As the Batalden Faculty Scholar in Applied Ethics, Joe worked with Egyptian and Somali youth in the Twin Cities on projects relating to civic engagement and empowerment. Deeply committed to experiential learning, Joe always seeks to provide students with innovative, high-impact, applied educational experiences. He has led study-abroad courses in New Zealand, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Egypt, and Tanzania. Last Fall, he led a semester-long study-away course down the Mississippi River. In 2016, he was recognized with the Distinguished Contributions Award in Teaching.

Joe's personal qualities and professional dedication, his extensive study, involvement and leadership in local and international peace and justice issues, together with his strong leadership experience, provides a powerful foundation for his work at Program Director of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. He looks forward to working closely with the Augsburg community and the NPPF staff in preparation for the next Forum, which will take place in the fall of 2017.

Please join me and President Pribbenow in welcoming Joe to this exciting new leadership role.

Saying Goodbye to Tim Brustad

Tim Brustad, StepUP program counselor, has decided to leave Augsburg and return to private practice. Tim has served StepUP for the past 7 years, working with countless students and families. Tim also served as the Intake Counselor for StepUP interviewing just about every student accepted to the program.

Tim has also been active in working with the veterans program, meeting with orientation leaders, and one of his favorites late night breakfast. His legacy of kindness, excellence, and service to everyone will remain. It is with sadness that we honor his decision. He will be missed. Please stop by and wish Tim well. His last day is Friday, September 2.

Taste of Augsburg Booth Registration

Are you a student group, athletic team or campus department wanting to take part in community fun and Homecoming festivities? Register for your booth at Taste of Augsburg where you can raise money and awareness of what you do while interacting with alumni, students, and friends of the College! As a “vendor” groups are encouraged to sell a product (food items, pompoms, etc) or a service (carnival game, face painting, etc). Groups are responsible for the cost of the product and/or service, but any profit that is made above the initial investment is yours to keep. If your group doesn't want to "sell" anything, but wants to participate that's OK too!

Visit www.augsburg.edu/homecoming/students to register for a booth or get more information. Please send completed forms to Katie Radford in Alumni Relations (radford@augsburg.edu) by Friday, September 16, 2016.

Also, student groups and athletic teams, the application for seed money is due this Friday, Sept. 2. The link can be found on the attachment for more information on the website above.
