Hagfors Center: Up To The Third Floor

Work on the north wing of the Hagfors Center continues upward this week — with crews putting concrete formwork in place for the third floor. The plan is to complete the concrete pours for the four floors of the north wing before beginning work on the three stories of the building’s west wing. A summary of expected construction activities for this week is posted on http://www.augsburg.edu/hagforscenter/construction-project-updates . Today's post includes the following:

LGBTQIA Workshop for Faculty - Thurs., Aug. 18

The first CTL workshop of the year is this Thursday! In this hands-on, discussion-based workshop, faculty will discuss strategies for creating welcoming, inclusive, and equitable classrooms and curricula for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) students, with a special focus on what they as faculty are experiencing in the classroom. Faculty are asked to bring examples of classroom situations they would like to discuss, syllabus statements they would like to workshop, and any other materials they would like feedback on.

This workshop does not meet the Ally Training requirement for the Diversity and Inclusion certificate; however, it does count toward the Advanced Standing certificate. This workshop is particularly suitable for faculty who have already completed Ally Training and want additional time to focus on specific classroom needs.

Led by Michael Grewe, Director of LGBTQIA Student Services and Assistant Director of Campus Activities and Orientation, and Adriane Brown, Assistant Professor and Director of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies.

Syllabus Workshop - Wed. Aug. 24

Are you frustrated by students who do not read your carefully crafted syllabus? Are you wondering if your syllabi contain too much, or not enough, information? Bring your syllabi and be ready to apply the CASE method (Copy And Steal Everything) in this hands-on syllabus construction deconstruction workshop. We will look at best practices in syllabus design, share and promote common language, and with any luck get some actual work done. Please bring your laptops and/or electronic copies of your syllabi. Led by CTL Faculty Fellows Jenny Hanson, Communication Studies, and Joe Erickson, Education.

Civic Studies Initiative at Augsburg

Beginning in the 2016-17 academic year, the Civic Studies Initiative, co-sponsored by the Sabo Center, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Education Department, will acquaint the wider college and its community partners with the theory and practice of civic agency and its transdisciplinary field of Civic Studies.

The Civic Studies Initiative will include four symposia open to all faculty, staff, students, and the public. These symposia will introduce Civic Studies as presenting a different definition of citizen, citizen as co-creator, and what that implies. They will also explain how to integrate civic agency skills into courses and student activities; look at how the "democracy college" lens calls for rethinking assessment to emphasize cooperative excellence; and explore what "public scholarship" looks like with a Civic Studies lens. The first symposium will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Another aspect of the initiative will be the selection of Civic Studies Augsburg Fellows and Community Fellows. These will be chosen from a variety of disciplines and staff units as well as community partners, forming a learning community, which will help organize the subsequent symposia, undertake more thorough study of Civic Studies, and develop projects for policy and culture change.

Faculty/Staff Book Group - America's Original Sin

In connection to the September 20 Bernhard M. Christensen Symposium, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a book group discussion of America's Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America by Jim Wallis.

The group will be co-led by Martha E. Stortz, Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation, and David Hamilton, Director of Operations and Global Inclusion, CGEE.

The Book Group will meet for brown bag lunch discussion in the Riverside Room from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays:

Help Needed for State Fair Booth Staffing

Every year Augsburg has a booth in the Education Building at the Great Minnesota Get Together August 25-Sept 5. This is a great opportunity to meet with hundreds of prospective students, alumni and current students who stop by to spin the wheel and say hello. Farewell Augsburg

It is with a full heart that I say farewell to Augsburg on this my last day. Thirty-five years is a long time. SO many people have touched me in my time here - people who saw me, affirmed who I am, helped me to see that I was doing MY work. This is such a caring place, which is why I've been here as long as I have.

Thanks to all who attended the send off on the 11th. It's been a grand journey - one of transformation, vocational fulfillment and meaningful work for me.

I leave trusting the Scholastic Connections will continue to be the mentoring community it has become for the student and mentor participants. It is in good hands with Jennifer and Mohamed!!

My final words of challenge to all:
1) Value yourself
2) See others
3) Be present
4) Do good work
5) Make a difference

Internship/Scholarship Applications Due Tomorrow

Augsburg, in partnership with Fairview Health Services, has received funding from the City of Minneapolis to create a pipeline for underrepresented upperclassmen from Minneapolis to pursue IT careers at Fairview. This month, six Augsburg students will be selected to receive a $2,200 scholarship as well as a paid fall semester internship ($20/hour) within IT at Fairview.

Students meeting the following requirements are encouraged to submit their resume to moralesj@augsburg.edu by tomorrow, Tuesday August 16:

- Minneapolis Public High School graduate and/or current resident of Minneapolis (on campus or permanent address)
- Identify as a student of color, first generation and/or Pell grant/MN Dream Act State Grant eligible
- Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Business Management
- Junior or Senior in good standing at Augsburg
- Interest in pursuing an IT career within health care

Unfortunately, international students are not eligible for this opportunity

Food Service Hours

The Commons is open from 7:15-8:30am for Breakfast, 11:30am-1pm for Lunch, and 5:45-6:45 for Dinner.

Einsteins is open from 7:30am-1:30pm.

Nabo is open from 4-8pm.

On Friday, August 26, all food service locations will return to full hours and full menus.

The Commons will be open from 7:30am-7pm Monday-Friday, and on Weekends from 11:30am-1pm and 5-7pm.

Einsteins will be open from 7:30am-9pm Monday-Thursday, 7:30am-8pm Fridays, and 7:30am-5pm Saturdays, and Closed on Sundays.

Nabo will be open from 7:30am-8pm Monday-Thursday, 7:30am-6pm Fridays and 7pm on Weekend College Fridays, 10am-2pm Saturdays, and Closed on Sundays.

Walking Tour of Seward (Remote Parking Lots)

On August 17, take a stroll through the Seward neighborhood with your Augsburg colleagues, and host Transit for Livable Communities to visit some local hotspots, including Augsburg's remote parking lots. Tour attendees will learn walking routes to and from Augsburg's campus, experience some of the local specialties that the neighborhood has to offer, and visit the two remote parking lot locations at Bethany Lutheran and the former Blue Nile.

Meet in Oren Gateway Center at noon and return by 1 p.m. Please plan to eat lunch beforehand or feel free to pick up something "to go" on the walk and eat when you return. Maximum of 15 participants.
