Spring Window Washing - Memorial Hall

On Monday, April 18, Custodial Services Staff will begin washing the windows at Memorial Hall. This process will take place throughout the week. Window screens will be removed and labeled with the corresponding office number and then set aside for washing and reinstallation by the Maintenance staff as they install the air conditioning units. Bryan Massich, Maintenance Manager, will be submitting a follow-up announcement in regards to the timeframe for the instillation of the air-conditioning units. Faculty/Staff Seminar Trip to Germany - Apply Now

In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, Augsburg College faculty and staff are invited to apply for a seminar trip to Germany from May 8-19, 2017. The trip will be led by Dr. Russell Kleckley and Dr. Mark Tranvik of the Religion Department. We will visit Berlin, Wittenberg, Leipzig, and end our trip in Prague. The focus will be on how vocation has been understood in the Lutheran tradition and how it still informs the life and work of the college today. All are welcome...you don't have to be Lutheran to come!

Seminar participants will be asked to pay $500. For faculty, an additional $500 can be available from CTL funds. Staff should speak with their supervisors about equivalent financial support from the College.

Those interested should submit a brief statement describing their interest in the seminar and the anticipated benefits for both the individual and the College. About two paragraphs should be fine. This should be sent to Mark Tranvik (tranvik@augsburg.edu) or Russell Kleckley (kleckley@augsburg.edu) by no later than May 2. Profs. Tranvik and Kleckley will also take your questions or concerns.

Next Tues. - AAUP Webinar on Intellectual Property

AAUP and CTL invite you to participate a webinar on intellectual property and university copyright policies. The session will address how copyright law interacts with copyright policies, identify how these interactions affect professor ownership and use of copyrighted works, and apply these concepts through the use of hypothetical situations. Jessica Nathanson's Scholarly Writing Retreat

Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat - it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

The retreat will take place Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m. (after lunch) through Tuesday, May 17 at 1 p.m. (after lunch). Please email ctl@augsburg.edu to reserve your space.

What do future Auggies expect from their courses, faculty and campus?

The Augsburg IT Department is sponsoring a future student panel to explore what technology future Auggies expect. Come see a panel, moderated by a current Auggie, where three incoming first year students will talk about what they expect from Augsburg's technology.

Teenagers have grown up in a world where technology is everywhere and how they learn is infused with technology. Many K-12 systems have laptop programs, smartboards, and use tools like moodle. This sets an expectation and shapes how they learn -- we need to understand this digital reality so we can help students succeed in the college environment. Come and hear from this panel and engage with them on questions you have about their digital reality.

Renew Your FAFSA by May 1

It's that time again! The FAFSA application for the 2016-2017 year is now available for students returning to Augsburg for the 2016-2017 academic year. The FAFSA is the application required to determine your eligibility for access to financial aid during your time at Augsburg, and must be renewed every year.

May 1st is the deadline to apply for financial aid at Augsburg. All Day College students must submit their application by this date or risk losing some of the aid that may be available to you.

File your taxes early to ensure that you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing your FAFSA this year. This function pre-populates your tax information into the application, which reduces your chances of being selected for verification later on. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is available for use on the FAFSA 2-3 weeks after electronically filing your taxes, and 6-8 weeks after filing paper taxes.

Shared Services Initiative

In 2014, the members of the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (Augsburg, Hamline, Macalester, St. Catherine, and St. Thomas) undertook a joint effort to explore the potential benefits of a shared services model. Shared services is a promising trend among smaller U.S. colleges--a collaborative approach across organizations to improve scale and value of specific institutional services. The opportunity identified through that process had merit from our perspective, but, ultimately, no program was approved among the five institutions.

Now, Augsburg is using that prior work to explore shared services opportunities with Luther Seminary. Robin Steinke, president of Luther Seminary, and I have agreed to jointly present this topic at our board meetings this spring. Our goal is to give our boards the information they need to determine whether we should pursue jointly leveraging our resources.

In preparation for the board meetings in late April and early May, we will document a rationale and scope for the undertaking, explore various operating designs at other institutions, outline a due diligence plan, and develop an initial sketch of the potential benefits, investments, and timelines needed to move forward. It is clear that a key criterion for moving forward is that both institutions would meaningfully benefit from the collaboration. Without mutual benefit, a shared services undertaking would not make sense.

If the boards agree that moving forward is merited, we expect to begin developing a shared services model and action plans for specific areas this summer. Information about the outcome of the Augsburg Board discussion will be provided in the summary from Board of Regents Chair Dr. Paul Mueller in early May.

Shred Right, our document destruction service, reminds us: You have a chance to help save the world! You can do it! Not sure how? Start one small habit on Earth Day (coming up on April 22) and impact the lives of all of us who get to live with you on this planet. You can plan now for little, or BIG, ways to help!

Here are some small ways (you can easily fit into your schedule) to help:
*Pick up trash! In your neighborhood, at work, as it blows by you at soccer practice.
*Recycle! You know the drill: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Every bit helps.
*Plant something! A tree, flowers, vegetables--get in the dirt.
*Turn your computer off at night! Save some energy.
*Use one less paper napkin! Reduce.
*Take a shorter shower! Save some water.
*Reduce paper mail by receiving online statements. Contact your banks, utility companies, investment firms, insurance companies, etc. and request online communications.

Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, is permitted in designated outside areas only.

There are 9 designated areas:
1. Plaza area outside of the Ice Arena.
2. Designated area in front of Si Melby.
3. Bench area outside of the music building.
4. North side of walkway entrance to Foss.
5. Oren Gateway entry near Lot H.
6. 7th Street side of Lindell Library.
7. Quad: patio area near Christensen.
8. Bench area between Anderson and Luther halls.
9. Urness/Mortensen near motorcycle parking.

Augsburg College is an educational institution that appreciates and endorses a healthy environment for its students, staff, faculty, guests, and community. Those who smoke are also responsible for properly disposing of cigarette butts.

The success of this policy will depend on the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and non-smokers. Everyone shares the responsibility for adhering to and enforcing the policy. In all cases the right of the non-smoker to protect her or his health and comfort will take precedence over a smoker's desire to smoke.

Augsburg Total Wellness - Food Drive - Final Days

For this month's wellness activity, we're going to focus on feeling good, by doing good. We will be collecting food items for Augsburg College's Campus Cupboard, which provides free food to students throughout the year.

Donations will be accepted in Human Resources until Friday--only a couple of days left to help us do good!

Items that the Cupboard is in need of (and what our students would like to see more of) include:
grains (e.g., cereal, rice, etc)
canned tuna
canned soup (not just canned broth)
canned vegetables and beans
non-dairy granola bars
chicken Alfredo sauce
tomato paste
pancake mix and waffle mix
snacks like Cheez-Its and crackers
The Campus Cupboard will accept a variety of other non-perishable food items, which makes it even easier for us to help our students as they head into final examinations and summer!

Film Festival Features Cedar Riverside

Film "A Stray" made here in Cedar Riverside will be shown at the MN International Film Festival this Friday evening and Sunday afternoon at St. Anthony Main Theatre.

The film received great reviews at SXSW Film Festival. An Augsburg alum and a current student worked on the movie with NY based film maker, Musa Syeed.

Rose Ensemble Performance at Augsburg - April 24

On Sunday, April 24, the Rose Ensemble will visit Augsburg for the final stop on their Land of Three Faiths tour.
