Paideia Institute summer 2016 Faculty/Staff
What is Paideia and how do you pronounce it? Paideia (pie-day-a) is a pedagogy that encourages inquiry-based discussions with others around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas. The Augsburg College Paideia Program has been offering training to Augsburg faculty, staff, and students as well as to teachers throughout the United States for the past twenty-seven years. We invite you to join us this summer for several events.
PAIDEIA INSTITUTE: This year marks the 27th annual Paideia Institute, July 25-29, 2016. The focus question this year is Truth is
. This great and timeless idea will be explored through a variety of genre along with coaching activities to assist you in facilitating seminars with your own curriculum.
The fee for the summer institute is $600 but we are able to offer up to $200 in scholarships; the Marie McNeff Scholarship for faculty and the Rita Kaplan Scholarship for staff. Faculty can also apply to the Center for Teaching and Learning for travel funds to cover the remaining portion of the registration fee. Staff should speak with their supervisors about equivalent financial support from the College. In Minnesota-speak this is a "heck-of-a-deal."
PAIDEIA INVITATIONAL: Don't have five days available for the Paideia Institute? Attend our one-day Paideia Invitational for a sampling of how teachers are engaging students in civil discourse. The invitational is Friday July 29 from approximately 10 am to 2 pm. The agenda involves a morning seminar, lunch, and an afternoon breakout session.
To learn more about the Augsburg Paideia Program please visit the Paideia website at http://augsburg.edu/paideia and to register contact Anne Kaufman at kaufman@augsburg.edu for details. Then, come and join in the conversations.
Bob Cowgill to Lead URGO SSHA Students
URGO is pleased to announce that Dr. Bob Cowgill will serve as this summer's URGO Faculty Research Coordinator for the Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA), a position most recently held by Dr. Phil Adamo. In this role Bob will teach a weekly seminar series for SSHA students, meet individually with students to facilitate progress, liaison with mentors, and create a community of learners. Cowgill has long supported scholarship and the work of URGO, including serving on the first selection committee reviewing summer research proposals 11 years ago, and every year since. Around the same time he joined URGO's Prestigious Awards Committee and has interviewed applicants for prestigious awards since. Because Bob has successfully mentored several students through the summer research experience, he knows the challenges and rewards that come with being a faculty research mentor. He also knows how to encourage the best work from students and we look forward to having him join the URGO team.

Nishesh Chalise, assistant professor of social work, has been selected by the Faculty Development Committee to serve a two-year term as a CTL Faculty Fellow. Congratulations Nishesh!
Continuing CTL Faculty Fellows include Joe Erickson, Jenny Hanson, Mzenga Wanyama, Bibiana Koh, and Rachel Lloyd. Special thanks to Hans Wiersma, whose term ends at the end of May.

Auggies Named National Science Foundation Fellows
Fikre Beyene '16, Physics and Allison Zank '14, Chemistry have been named National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows for 2016-2017. Fikre and Allison will receive a $34,000 annual stipend and $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to assist them in achieving a research-based master's or doctoral degree. This year, there were close to 17,000 applicants for the awards, and only 2,000 selected Fellows. Sadie Tetrick '16, Physics & Mathematics, was named Honorable Mention. An NSF GRFP indicates to graduate schools that these students are top undergraduate scientists in the nation. Congratulations to these students and the departments who mentored them.
Below is a small snapshot of each of these students' amazing science accomplishments.
Fikre Beyene has conducted Space Physics research with Dr. Engebretson and Dr. Murr since the summer after his freshman year. Over his four years here, he has been named a Sundquist Scholar, McNair Scholar, AugSTEM Scholar, Calc Workshop Teaching Assistant, Rossing Physics Scholar, and Goldwater Scholar. He will be entering the Astro Physics PhD program at UCLA this fall.
Allison Zank conducted summer research on biofilms with Dr. Bankers-Fulbright as well as at the University of Minnesota's Dental School. She has also spent time conducting research in industry. Over her time here, she was named an URGO Scholar, McNair Scholar, AugSTEM Scholar, and Goldwater Scholar. She plans to pursue a Master's degree in Clinical Microbiology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this fall.
Sadie Tetrick began her space physics research here on campus with Dr. Murr and Dr. Engebretson and went on to conduct summer research at Dartmouth University and the University of Minnesota. During her time here, Sadie has been a Sundquist Scholar, President of Society of Physics Students, Co-founder of Women in Physics, and a member of Pi Mu Epsilon. Sadie will be joining the PhD program in Physics at the University of Iowa this fall.
Cameron Olson '17 named Goldwater Scholar
Augsburg Physics major, Cameron Olson '17, was awarded a $7,500 Goldwater Scholarship, the premier STEM award for undergraduates. Each college in the country is able to nominate four undergraduate STEM students, and this year, 252 awardees were chosen from 1,150 applicants nationwide. Cameron has conducted space physics research here on campus with Dr. Engebretson and will do a second summer of research this year at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab under the mentorship of Augsburg physics alumnus, Dr. Brian Anderson '82.
