Concrete Work Northwest Entrance of the Science Building

Restoration Systems will be removing the old stairs and installing new sidewalk on the Northwest entrance of the Science Building starting Wednesday, July 1, and finishing Wednesday, July 8. Please contact Bryan with facilities with any questions or concerns at 612-280-7447.

Who: Anyone interested in R/RStudio (Newcomers are welcome! Bring your laptop!)
When: Wednesday, July 1, 1 p.m.
Where: Science 108
What: Fifth Meeting of ARG (Augsburg R-users Group) focusing on examples of using R/RStudio in the classroom.

Full description:

Have you ever wanted to use R/RStudio but didn't know where to start? Are you learning R/RStudio, but have hit a wall? Are you a seasoned R user and want to learn some new tricks? Do you have wisdom (about R/RStudio) to share with your colleagues?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, than ARG (Augsburg R-user Group) is for you! ARG will be meeting Wednesday, July 1, in Science 108. This time we will be exploring how to use R and RStudio in your classes, focusing on examples from an introductory statistics course.

Bring your laptop, your friendly spirit, and your eagerness to learn and share with this new community of R users at Augsburg.

Newcomers are always welcome! Be sure to bring your laptop! If you are new to R and RStudio, you can download R to your computer (for free) from this website: http://cran.r-project.org/ and you can download RStudio (still free) from this website: http://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/

AugSTEM Applications Due July 1

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars can receive up to $7,000 per year in financial support. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:

Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
Within 5 semesters of graduating
Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA
*Incoming community college transfer students and Augsburg students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply.

Augsburg Total Wellness - Choose Well Registration

What is Choose Well?
In this 4-week program, you will learn how to choose healthier foods when stocking your kitchen, making meals, snacking and eating in restaurants. You will develop a deeper understanding of how to choose well when eating on the run.

How do I participate?
Complete the online registration form by clicking this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AUGSCW2 (Registration ends June 30th).

Then pick up your Choose Well booklet in Human Resources the week of June 29th.

When does the program start?
The Choose Well program runs July 6th through August 2nd.

What do I do when the program is finished?
When you have successfully completed the program your shopping cart will be completely filled in. The shopping cart is located on page 10 of your Choose Well program booklet. Simply write your name on the shopping cart page of your booklet then email berggren@augsburg.edu, fax 612-330-1443 or drop off a copy of your cart to Katie Berggren by August 7th.

Are there any incentives for participating in this program?
Yes! Participants that successfully complete the program may have either a $50.00 HSA contribution applied to their 2015 Wellness HSA maximum contribution of $200 or will have their name entered into a prize drawing. Prizes for this program include Nike gym bags, Barnes and Noble gift cards and more.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Two Physics Faculty and One Student Present at Workshop

Physics faculty members David Murr and Mark Engebretson, along with Senior Physics major Fekire Beyene, attended and made presentations at the 2015 GEM Summer Workshop, organized by the National Science Foundation, June 14-19, in Snowmass, CO. David also co-chaired Focus Group sessions on "Transient Phenomena at the Magnetopause and Bow Shock and Their Ground Signatures." During the week of June 21-26 Murr and Engebretson attended and made presentations at the quadrennial meeting of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Prague, Czech Republic. David presented an invited talk, "ULF waves observed with ground-based magnetometers and GPS TEC," and Mark made three presentations on electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and co-chaired sessions on Ultra-Low-Frequency (ULF) waves. A paper by Engebretson on EMIC waves observed by NASA's Van Allen Probes satellite mission and by ground-based magnetometers, which was the basis for one of his talks, was recently accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics.
