What: Fifth Meeting of ARG (Augsburg R-users Group) focusing on examples of using R/RStudio in the classroom.

Have you ever wanted to use R/RStudio but didn't know where to start? Are you learning R/RStudio, but have hit a wall? Are you a seasoned R user and want to learn some new tricks? Do you have wisdom (about R/RStudio) to share with your colleagues?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, than ARG (Augsburg R-user Group) is for you! ARG will be meeting Wednesday, July 1, in Science 108.
This time we will be exploring how to use R and RStudio in your classes, focusing on examples from an introductory statistics course.
Bring your laptop, your friendly spirit, and your eagerness to learn and share with this new community of R users at Augsburg.

AugSTEM Applications Due July 1 - TOMORROW
The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars can receive up to $7,000 per year in financial support. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
Within 5 semesters of graduating
Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA
*Incoming community college transfer students and Augsburg students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply.

Augsburg Total Wellness - Choose Well Registration
What is Choose Well?
In this 4-week program, you will learn how to choose healthier foods when stocking your kitchen, making meals, snacking and eating in restaurants. You will develop a deeper understanding of how to choose well when eating on the run.
How do I participate?
Complete the online registration form by clicking this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AUGSCW2 (Registration ends June 30th).
Then pick up your Choose Well booklet in Human Resources the week of June 29th.
When does the program start?
The Choose Well program runs July 6th through August 2nd.
What do I do when the program is finished?
When you have successfully completed the program your shopping cart will be completely filled in. The shopping cart is located on page 10 of your Choose Well program booklet. Simply write your name on the shopping cart page of your booklet then email berggren@augsburg.edu, fax 612-330-1443 or drop off a copy of your cart to Katie Berggren by August 7th.
Are there any incentives for participating in this program?
Yes! Participants that successfully complete the program may have either a $50.00 HSA contribution applied to their 2015 Wellness HSA maximum contribution of $200 or will have their name entered into a prize drawing. Prizes for this program include Nike gym bags, Barnes and Noble gift cards and more.
Keeping Track of Auggies
Two Auggies Chosen for National China Delegation
Two Augsburg students, Sadiya Jiru and Hussein Abdullahi, were chosen to participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) Emerging Leaders: US-China Study Abroad Delegation. Sadiya is a junior majoring in Computer Science, and Hussein is a senior Biology/Chemistry double major.
Sadiya and Hussein are two of just 20 students from around the country chosen to participate. This elite delegation of STEM students all had exceptional coursework in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. They will have the opportunity to network with high-achieving STEM peers from the black community and engage an intercultural experience to a country that is a leader in STEM fields.
Delegates have almost all program and travel costs covered by CBCF. They met in Washington, D.C for a briefing with government officials before departing for two weeks in Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. They will brief officials in D.C. on their experience before returning to Minnesota. The program will take place June 25 to July 13.
During the program, students will study Mandarin, Chinese history & culture, and interact with Chinese leaders in science and technology. Included is a tour of the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing, lectures and workshops about China's economy, education system, art, and history, and U.S.-China relations.
"The CBCF is committed to providing students with a global perspective," said A. Shuanise Washington, president and chief executive officer of the CBCF. "The China study abroad program will allow our students to see the educational and career opportunities that are available to them internationally."
The China-U.S. Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) organized and administered the program in collaboration with the CBCF.
Outreach to Augsburg students about opportunities like this is made possible by The Center for Global Education and Experience. CGEE's ongoing commitment is to provide great international experiences for all Augsburg students, including those who are under-represented in study abroad. This group includes, but is not limited to, students identifying by a certain race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/ expression, disability, age, or veteran status, as well as first-generation college students and students from low-income families.
Augsburg SciTechsperience Interns
Minnesota is going to need 188,000 skilled workers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by 2018 in order to keep up with retiring baby boomers and new technologies.[1] Our state must be proactive in attracting and retaining not only STEM workers, but also high tech companies and the high-quality jobs they provide. SciTechsperience was created in 2011 and launched in 2012 to address Minnesota's STEM workforce needs.
SciTechsperience internships connect college students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines to paid internships in small to mid-sized Minnesota companies. The internships provide hands-on industry experience, enhance a student's educational experiences and offer insightful, practical, first-hand training that, when leveraged with their college education, will help them achieve full-time employment in their field of study.
During the 2014-15 academic year, 11 Augsburg students were placed in SciTechsperience internships, an increase over 2013-14, during which four were placed. The statewide program sponsored by the Minnesota High Tech Association received over 800 applications for approximately 125 positions.
