Cuban Film, "Tierralismo" Next Tuesday

Tierralismo-Cuban film on agroecology and panel of U.S. farmers that have gone to Cuba

When: Tuesday, March 31st
Where: Science #123
Time: 7:00pm

Sponsored by: Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship and Campus Kitchen in cooperation with Professor Jenny Hanson, Film Studies at Augsburg.

The Tierralismo Good Earth Film screenings of the recently released documentary, Tierralismo: Stories from a Cooperative Farm. Part of the AMI Cuba catalogue, Tierralismo is about the history and practices of one of Cuba's most successful urban farms, the Organoponico Vivero Alamar (Alamar Organic Cooperative). Tierralismo, introduces viewers to everyone from agronomists and senior management to workers who plant, plow, and propagate. What began as a necessity - farming without pesticides and chemical fertilizers - has become a source of pride to coop members.

Tierralismo also covers non-farming aspects of the operation, such as human resources and accounting practices. In a land where financial resources are scarce and governmentally controlled, transparency and trust are paramount. Many of the coop's members have come from other fields - including a former pathologist, a fisherman, and an oil-industry worker. More than half are seniors - including an 82-year-old who says when it comes to hoeing, he can outwork anyone in their twenties. This is a film not only about the food and the farm but the characters who make it happen.

Coalition for Global Activism and Change

The Coalition for Global Activism and Change (CGAC) organization aims to raise  awareness about global issues and serve as a platform for students to take action on a global level. As part of this organization Eleni Beyene, Keisha Barnard, and Quinn Gamble attended the Annual Spring Lobby Weekend that is hosted by the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). This four day conference included training students in effective constitute lobbying to prepare them to lobby on the final day about climate change. Katie Edelen, Augsburg alum, hosted them.

Kate Edelen is a research associate and former Scoville Peace Fellow at the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). Previously, Edelen was a Fulbright research fellow at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) where she examined the influence of climate variability on dynamics of cooperation and conflict in South Asia. At FCNL, she works on issues at the interface of natural resource governance, socioeconomic development and environmental diplomacy and peacebuilding. Kate has also worked on community level public health and water resource management projects in India and Uganda, respectively.
