Our Passion to Teach - This Thursday

Our Passion to Teach - Discovery and Fulfillment of Our Teaching Values, Vision, and Purpose

Author and educator, Parker Palmer states, "Community, or connectedness, is the principle behind good teaching, but different teachers with different gifts create community in surprisingly diverse ways, using widely divergent methods."

Building on Palmer's assertion, and reflecting on and rekindling our own passion to teach has compelled a group of us at Augsburg, led by Dave Conrad, to create and offer interactive opportunities for faculty to gather, reflect on our teaching values and purpose, and to share our discoveries, challenges, and successes in our quest to do what we love to do most - teach. Instead of just seeking gaps, errors, and flaws in teaching, our group's spirit and intent is to discover and help fulfill what we do best.

The initial conversation will be held on Thursday, March 26th, and we will take time to articulate what "Our Passion to Teach" dialogue series should be and become. If you want to join the conversation, please come to SVE 102 (note room change) from 3:45-4:45. All you need to bring is your passion to teach.

Preview History Class About Street Riots in Mpls

Ever wish you could test drive a class before you register for it? T. Williams, former school board member, organizer and civil rights leader from North Minneapolis will be on campus to give a mini-lecture from the course he will be teaching at Augsburg in the Fall.

Come hear Mr. Williams on Tuesday 3/24 or Wednesday 3/25, 9:30-10:30 in the Riverside Room.

This course will utilize a series of oral history stories from 1965-1975, personal observations, and other historical documentations to discuss and identify the impact of the street and prison riots on social policy and social justice issues in Minnesota. The street riots in Minneapolis in 1966-1967 and in other urban centers throughout the United States stimulated Minneapolis' corporate, government and community leaders to take action to address many of the social and economic conditions, which had led to the riots locally and elsewhere in the country.

TONIGHT, 6:45 p.m. - Film "Profit and Loss"

Tonight in Sateren Auditorium, Augsburg's Native American Film Series shows "Profit and Loss" which documents how indigenous groups in Papua New Guinea and near the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, fight the loss of land, water and health to mining and oil industries.

Tuesday, March 24, 2015
Screening of Profit and Loss begins at 7:00 pm
Reception 6:15 pm-6:45
Discussion to follow film

Hosts: Dr. Cecilia Martinez (The Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy) and Tom Goldtooth (Indigenous Environmental Network)
FFI: augsburg.edu/filmseries/2014/12/17/profit-loss/

Thank you to our sponsors:
Augsburg College, American Indian Studies Department, Environmental Studies Program, Institute for Global Studies, University of Minnesota, Center for Earth, Energy, and Democracy, Indigenous Environmental Network

Profit and Loss exposes industrial threats to native peoples' health, livelihood and cultural survival. In Papua New Guinea, a nickel mine that violently relocated villagers to taboo land is building a new pipeline and refinery, and dumping mining waste into the sea. In Alberta, First Nations people suffer from rare cancers as their traditional hunting grounds are strip-mined to unearth the world's third-largest oil reserve. Rare verité scenes of tribal life and intimate interviews allow indigenous people to tell their own stories—and confront us with the ethical consequences of our culture of consumption. Narrated by Graham Greene (Oneida).

THE PRICE OF HEALING: Diversity Issues in Wellness

Critical Conversation:
THE PRICE OF HEALING: Diversity Issues in Wellness, Health and Healthcare

Friday, March 27
1:30-3:00 pm
Givens Conference Room, Andersen Library
Sponsor: University of Minnesota's Office for Equity and Diversity

The U.S. spends the greatest amount of GDP on health care per capita among the "most advanced" countries yet ranks 46th in the world regarding "most efficient" healthcare (Bloomberg, 2013). This conversation examines health care research and treatment disparities while also exploring cultural knowledge and practices that communities use to maintain health. One's view about health can be influenced by race, ethnicity, sexuality, socio-economic status, gender, spirituality and other factors. How do our cultural lenses and experiences affect how we think about health and health care? Historically, how have health care professionals and providers delivered treatment to diverse individuals and groups? What groups have been considered "normative" for research about disease prevention and treatment? What can be learned from various cultures that may improve health and wellness in the U.S.?

Panelists: Elder Atum Azzahir, Executive Director, Cultural Wellness Center, Minneapolis; Dylan Flunker, Policy and Community Organizing Coordinator, Rainbow Health Initiative; Rhonda Jones-Webb, Associate Professor, University of Minnesota Department of Epidemiology; Patina Park, Cheyenne River Lakota and Director, Minnesota American Indian Women's Resource Center. Moderator: Doneka Scott, Assistant Vice Provost, Office for Equity and Diversity, University of Minnesota.

Live streaming of this Conversation - and archived recordings of previous Conversations - are available via the Critical Conversations website:

Keeping Track of Auggies

Augsburg Set Lee Furman '61 on Path to Service

Leola "Lee" (Dyrud) Furman '61 remembers her very first day of school well: "My mother announced that I had many years of schooling ahead of me: grade school, high school, and then Augsburg College!" Furman not only attended Augsburg, she became one of its most loyal benefactors and volunteers, a Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient, an adjunct faculty member, and one of the first to make a financial commitment to the Center for Science, Business, and Religion.

Growing up on a farm in Thief River Falls, Minn., surrounded by her Norwegian family, Furman didn't think much about urban poverty and blight. At age 12, however, she attended Bible camp and heard Augsburg professor Mert Strommen '42 talk about the great need for social workers. "I felt the call to service at this early age, and I knew that Augsburg would prepare me for this calling."

At Augsburg, President Bernard Christensen reminded students often that, "Unto whom much has been given, much is expected," and sociology professor Joel Torstenson opened her eyes to issues of poverty and race relations. Both men challenged students to become involved in social justice issues, regardless of their career paths.

After Augsburg, Furman went on to earn a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Chicago and a PhD from the Fielding Graduate University. By the time she completed her doctorate, she was living in Grand Forks, ND, with husband Philip Furman, raising two boys, and teaching in the social work department at the University of North Dakota (UND).

After her husband, a surgeon, died of cancer, Lee found solace in her Christian faith. "It was this experience and sorrow that made me realize that religion and spirituality can be a strength during a life crisis, and that we need to incorporate this into our social work teaching and practice," Furman says.

Furman returned to Minneapolis, where she served Augsburg as an adjunct faculty member from 2004 to 2012, and became an active member of the Augsburg Associates. Her loyal support of Augsburg comes naturally: Her uncle Even Ose served on the Augsburg Board from 1946 until 1959. He helped raised funds for the current science building and was a generous Augsburg contributor himself, as were many other family members.

In recognition of Furman's generous gift for the CSBR, a religion faculty office will be named in her honor. "The CSBR will play an important part in the lives of students from the moment they step on campus," says Furman.
