McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Spring 2015

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Spring 2015 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2016.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Bonner Leaders Program Application

The Bonner Leaders Program is looking to add energized and passionate first-year students to its program for the upcoming academic year!

The Augsburg Bonner Leaders Program is a community-based work-study program encouraging leadership development for students dedicated to integrating civic engagement into their college learning experience.

Requirements:
1. Eligible for work study funds through awarded financial aid
2. Able to make a 2 year commitment to participating in the Augsburg Bonner Leader program
3. Work 10-15 hours/week with a community partner (totaling ~140 hours a semester)
4. Attend all Bonner meetings (~4 hours/ month)

Day at the Capitol - Thank You

Thank you to the 19 students who dedicated their day to support the Minnesota State Grant. Our day began with walking to the Green Line on a rather frigid day. Once we arrived at the Capitol, we made our way to the meeting room. Sen. Kari Dziedzic, Representative Diane Loeffler, Danna Elling, DFL Senate researcher, and Auggie parent, and her daughter Libby Schultz '13, a graphic designer for MNDOT, shared their connection to Augsburg and their vocation and experiences.

Our students wrote 32 notes to co-chairs of the higher-ed committee, their senators, and thank you notes to Governor Dayton. Each student also met with their representative to thank them for their support of the MN State Grant and advocate for Governor Dayton's proposal for a $25 million addition and expanded support for day students and adult undergraduates.

Sabo Scholar Applications Available Now

Attention sophomores -- The application to be a Sabo Scholar during 2015-2016 is now available. The Sabo Scholars are a small group of juniors and seniors who have interest in and a commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy, and careers in public service.

Dr. Colin Irvine - Fulbright Award Announcement

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

It is with great excitement and admiration that I announce Dr. Colin Irvine, Associate Professor of English, and former Fulbright recipient, has been selected to receive a rare, second Fulbright award in American Studies.

Colin and his family will spend the 2015-16 academic year in Bergen, Norway, where Colin will join the English Department at the University of Bergen. Building on his previous experience as a Fulbright scholar, Colin will have the opportunity to extend on his scholarship exploring the compelling intersection of narrative theory and American culture as a means of interpreting and understanding complex literary texts.

In the three years since his first year-long stay in Norway, Colin has written an expansive travelogue/memoir on the many facets of life in Norway, directly inspired from his year abroad; he has edited a collection of essays on the importance of place in the American West during the mid-20th century; and has begun a third manuscript, which is in outline format, from his time as a Roving Scholar in the videregående skoles in Norway. He also developed two new courses—one on sports in American society and one on transportation--that grew out of his Roving Scholar presentations.

Please join me in congratulating Colin on these significant accomplishments and this second Fulbright recognition!

Einstein's is open from 7:30am-9:00pm with the Late Night Menu starting at 7:00pm.

The Commons is open from 7:30am-7:00pm. Market Place is serving Chicken Acapulco, Spanish Rice, Black Beans, and Garlic & Herb Roasted Broccoli. Vege is serving Confetti Rice, Balsamic Baked Asparagus, Cuban Rice & Beans, and Spiced Lemony Brussel Sprouts.

On March 26th we will be having an Iron Chef Competition in The Commons. Teams will be of two people, come up with your best recipe to compete against the chef! The sign-up sheet is at the register in The Commons.

United Nations Email Over the Weekend

Many members of the Augsburg community received an email this weekend referencing the United Nations. As with all unwanted emails from unknown senders you can click the "Spam" button to mark it as spam and train the Google spam filter. This removes the message from your inbox. This message also had an attachment. Using the same thinking (unwanted message from unknown sender) it's best practice to not open the attachment.

If you receive an email that raises safety concerns you can always contact Public Safety at publicsafety@augsburg.edu to inform them.

Apply to be a Youth Theology Institute Mentor

Attention current students:

If you enjoy engaging in thoughtful faith conversations, mentoring high school youth, and working in a team setting, please take a look at the "ACYTI Mentor" posting on the Human Resources website and apply soon. The position is listed on the Human Resources employment listings under "student positions."

Mentors should be available for some training in April and the entire week of June 13-19. Note: this is a paid internship. The Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute is a collaborative effort by the Christensen Center for Vocation, Campus Ministry, and the Religion Department.

Boyte Speech on Student Success - This Tuesday

Please join the Sabo Center on Tuesday, March 3, from 4-5 p.m. (previously scheduled for 3:30, changed to accommodate Staff Awards attendees) in the Marshall Room for a listening and feedback session with Harry Boyte, Senior Scholar of the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship. Later in March Harry will be delivering the concluding address to the Gates Foundation SXSW EDU 2015 conference, "Getting to Graduation: Re-designing Higher Ed for Student Success" in Austin, Texas.

This feedback session will feature a draft of Boyte's speech, which draws on Augsburg experiences and innovations, as well as the civic agency/public work/democratic society framework reflected in the new book collection he edited, Democracy's Education: Public Work, Citizenship, and the Future of Colleges and Universities (Vanderbilt University Press). This talk is an important opportunity to showcase some of the work of Augsburg and our colleagues in "educating for democracy" throughout higher education, and is open to anyone who would like to attend.
