Our Passion to Teach
Our Passion to Teach - Discovery and Fulfillment of Our Teaching Values, Vision, and Purpose
Author and educator, Parker Palmer states, "Community, or connectedness, is the principle behind good teaching, but different teachers with different gifts create community in surprisingly diverse ways, using widely divergent methods."
Building on Palmer's assertion, and reflecting on and rekindling our own passion to teach has compelled a group of us at Augsburg, led by Dave Conrad, to create and offer interactive opportunities for faculty to gather, reflect on our teaching values and purpose, and to share our discoveries, challenges, and successes in our quest to do what we love to do most - teach. Instead of just seeking gaps, errors, and flaws in teaching, our group's spirit and intent is to discover and help fulfill what we do best.
The initial conversation will be held on Thursday, March 26th, and we will take time to articulate what "Our Passion to Teach" dialogue series should be and become. If you want to join the conversation, please come to the Marshall Room from 3:45-4:45. All you need to bring is your passion to teach.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Spring 2015
Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Spring 2015 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.
The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2016.
The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.
If you are interested in learning more about the McNair Scholars Program, please contact Lara Crombie, Program Assistant at crombie@augsburg.edu or (612) 330-1380 to schedule an appointment. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the program or if you're unsure whether or not you qualify.

Craft Supply Drive for U of M Children's Hospital
Kids in hospital rooms, waiting rooms, and outpatient clinics all find comfort and enjoyment in having something fun to do, and crafts are a great option! For this reason, crafts supplies are in constant demand at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. They are handed out to patients in these various areas and are available to inpatients and their siblings in the unit playrooms.
The students in Tri-Beta, the biological honors society, are collecting craft items for the U of M Masonic Children's Hospital Monday, March 9, through Friday, March 13. We are hoping to collect enough supplies to put together several kits, ready to be handed out to children of all ages at the hospital.
Below are some of the items we are looking for, though others would be great, too. All items must be new and unused. By hospital guidelines, we cannot accept items that may be dangerous to children, nor can we take glitter, live feathers, pasta, beans, latex balloons, leaves, moss, or dirt.
- Crayons
- Markers
- Colored pencils
- Construction paper
- Coloring books/pages
- Pom-poms
- Pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Tissue paper
- Stickers
- Foam stickers/pages
- Popsicle sticks
- Bendy straws
- String
- Clothes pins
- Glue sticks/Elmer's glue
Boxes for item collection can be found in Christensen Center and in the Biology Suite (2nd Floor) of the Science Hall. Thank you for your support of the U of M Masonic Children's Hospital and of Tri-Beta. If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Grafelman at grafel10@augsburg.edu.
Community Gatherings for Max Bassinson
Today, we will remember and celebrate the life of Max David Bassinson in two services. First, when we gather for our daily Chapel service at 10:40 a.m., we will hear music in Max's memory, including the Augsburg Choir, who will sing one of Max's favorite choral anthems. The Foss Atrium will remain open after the Chapel service for people to gather in community as they are able.
At 5 p.m., we will hold a circle service and celebration of Max's life in Hoversten Chapel. During this circle service, there will be time to remember Max in word, song, and prayer, and moments to support one another in our grief. Max's parents plan to be with us during this service, and we are grateful that they will hear how blessed we have been to have Max as part of our community. Throughout the circle service, members of the community may arrive and depart as needed so that as many as possible have an opportunity to join the service as they are able.
I hope that all those who knew Max will have an opportunity to join the community in remembering Max and supporting each other during this time of grief. As well, please remember that counseling and support services are available through Campus Ministry and the Center for Wellness and Counseling for any member of the Augsburg community needing support during this difficult time.

Lutheran Social Services, Anoka County, EPPA Medical Scribe, Palmetto GBA, and Finnegan's.
Fund for the Public Interest - Tabling This Week
The Fund for the Public Interest is a non-profit group started in 1982. Our mission is to build support for the nation's top progressive non-profit groups and help them win their campaigns. Over the last 30 years, we've helped over 40 organizations widen their base of support and we are currently partnering with Environment America, USPIRG, and the Human Rights Campaign. We tend to focus our work on the most critical environmental and social justice issues. And, over the years, our state and national summer campaigns have been extremely successful.
The Fund is currently hiring students who work hard, communicate well, and are looking to make a positive social change. We are holding information sessions and interviews on campus in the lobby of the Christensen Center on Monday, March 9th and Tuesday, March 10th. (9:00-4:00) If you are interested in hearing more about this opportunity, please call 1-800-75-EARTH

Native American Film Series: Tues. March 24 6:45 p.m.
From the acclaimed series Standing on Sacred Ground, this film called Profit and Loss, documents how indigenous groups in Papua New Guinea and near the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, fight the loss of land, water and health to mining and oil industries.
Tuesday, March 24, 2015
Screening of Profit and Loss begins at 7:00 pm
Reception 6:15pm-6:45
Discussion to follow film
Sateren Auditorium, Anderson Music Hall
Hosts: Dr. Cecilia Martinez (The Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy) and Tom Goldtooth (Indigenous Environmental Network) FFI: augsburg.edu/filmseries/2014/12/17/profit-loss/
Thank you to our sponsors:
Augsburg College, American Indian Studies Department, Environmental Studies Program, Institute for Global Studies, University of Minnesota, Center for Earth, Energy, and Democracy, Indigenous Environmental Network
Profit and Loss exposes industrial threats to native peoples' health, livelihood and cultural survival. In Papua New Guinea, a nickel mine that violently relocated villagers to taboo land is building a new pipeline and refinery, and dumping mining waste into the sea. In Alberta, First Nations people suffer from rare cancers as their traditional hunting grounds are strip-mined to unearth the world's third-largest oil reserve. Rare verité scenes of tribal life and intimate interviews allow indigenous people to tell their own stories--and confront us with the ethical consequences of our culture of consumption. Narrated by Graham Greene (Oneida).
