Our Passion to Teach
Our Passion to Teach - Discovery and Fulfillment of Our Teaching Values, Vision, and Purpose
Author and educator, Parker Palmer states, "Community, or connectedness, is the principle behind good teaching, but different teachers with different gifts create community in surprisingly diverse ways, using widely divergent methods."
Building on Palmer's assertion, and reflecting on and rekindling our own passion to teach has compelled a group of us at Augsburg, led by Dave Conrad, to create and offer interactive opportunities for faculty to gather, reflect on our teaching values and purpose, and to share our discoveries, challenges, and successes in our quest to do what we love to do most - teach. Instead of just seeking gaps, errors, and flaws in teaching, our group's spirit and intent is to discover and help fulfill what we do best.
The initial conversation will be held on Thursday, March 26th, and we will take time to articulate what "Our Passion to Teach" dialogue series should be and become. If you want to join the conversation, please come to SVE 102 (note room change) from 3:45-4:45. All you need to bring is your passion to teach.
What Do You Do When the Conversation Gets Heated?
Staff and Faculty, have you ever had a class session or meeting meltdown because a controversy or conflict got too hot to handle? Our next CTL coffee will offer a chance to share stories, successes, and tips. A brief presentation featuring strategies to handle "hot moments" will also be offered. In preparation for the discussion, please read Managing Hot Moments in the Classroom http://web.augsburg.edu/ctl/ManagingHotMoments.pdf. While the article focuses on classroom discussions, our conversation will focus on several areas in which the moment can get heated.

Speaking of Scholarship - Sabbatical Speed Orating
The CTL is hosting a Speaking of Scholarship "speed orating" event featuring the work from 2013-2014 sabbaticals. The presentations will be short and accessible across all disciplines, hence "speed orating." This will allow for attendees to hear about multiple research projects in an informal, roundtable discussion format. Please join us in celebrating your fellow colleagues' work.

Join Us in the Community Garden This Year
I know this lovely weather has you dreaming about spring and summer. Don't worry, it's not too early for that! While you're dreaming, consider applying for a plot in the Augsburg Community Garden where you can spend your days digging in the dirt, eating fresh food, and enjoying the company and gardening wisdom of our neighbors.
To get a plot, we ask that you have a strong connection to the Cedar Riverside Community (Augsburg connections count!), contribute $30 for the year (scholarships available), and volunteer at least 4 hours to help maintain and improve the whole garden (not just your own plot). We'll provide the space, the tools, and some support in making the most of your garden!

Profit and Loss exposes industrial threats to native peoples' health, livelihood and cultural survival. In Papua New Guinea, a nickel mine that violently relocated villagers to taboo land is building a new pipeline and refinery, and dumping mining waste into the sea. In Alberta, First Nations people suffer from rare cancers as their traditional hunting grounds are strip-mined to unearth the world's third-largest oil reserve. Rare verité scenes of tribal life and intimate interviews allow indigenous people to tell their own stories--and confront us with the ethical consequences of our culture of consumption. Narrated by Graham Greene (Oneida).

CSBR Donor Honors Auggie Wife, Daughters With Gift
"Augsburg has been part of our lives for a long time," says Tom Crook. Tom isn't an alumnus himself, but the three most important women in his life attended Augsburg: his late wife Nancy English, M.D. '73 and their daughters, Hilary '01 and Emily '07, '15 Crook. His $25,000 gift to the Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR) honors his wife and daughters. "We've always been fond of Augsburg," says Tom. "I thought it was a nice way to remember my wife and honor my children."
Tom and his family will be recognized with the naming of a psychology faculty office in the new building. Tom says that naming a psychology office seemed right because Nancy was a social worker before she went to medical school at age 37, and she had considered returning to medical school to become a psychiatrist. Instead, she decided to dedicate her career to the practice of family medicine. "Anyone who's going to study pre-med at Augsburg will spend a lot of time in that building," says Tom. The gift to Augsburg also celebrates the family's and the College's shared Norwegian roots.
Tom and Nancy grew up in Minneapolis and were married in 1976. They raised Hilary and Emily in Duluth, where Tom became vice president of Treasury Services for Essentia Health, and Nancy became chief of staff for St. Luke's Hospital and a member of the Staff Executive Committee at St. Mary's Medical Center. They were happy when their daughters chose Augsburg, knowing that they would get a taste of city life and be exposed to a more diverse population. "Augsburg's location in the inner city is unique," explains Tom. "The student body is quite diverse, and Nancy and I were pleased that the College values that." Today, Hilary (right in photo) is an attorney and regional sales manager at Thomson Reuters in Eagan, while Emily (left in photo) teaches fourth grade in St. Louis Park. Nancy is remembered as a doctor, social worker, women's health advocate, community supporter, wife, and mother.
For more of Tom Crook's story and other stories of Auggie generosity, visit the CSBR blog: http://www.augsburg.edu/csbr/2015/03/09/tom-crook-honors-wife-nancy-english-73-and-daughters-with-gift-to-building/
