McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Spring 2015

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Spring 2015 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2016.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

If you are interested in learning more about the McNair Scholars Program, please contact Lara Crombie, Program Assistant at crombie@augsburg.edu or (612) 330-1380 to schedule an appointment. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the program or if you're unsure whether or not you qualify.

Application Deadline: Friday, March 27, 5 p.m.
Priority Deadline: Friday, March 13, 5 p.m.

Help Auggies Fight Hunger and Food Waste

From Feb. 20-27, Campus Kitchen students are competing against their peers in a nationwide fundraiser called "Raise The Dough." In addition to raising funds, prizes are available for the schools that raise the most money and that engage the most number of donors.

Our Goal: Raise $1,200 to travel 1,200 miles to attend the Food Waste & Hunger Summit!

Why, you ask? Hear it from the Auggies themselves:
"...I want to learn about the causes and solutions for food insecurity and food waste."
"...it's a great place to hear new ideas and events that we can do in the years to come, it's a way to see where Augsburg's program fits into a nationwide effort, and the enthusiasm from the students you meet truly sets you up to bring that excitement back to Augsburg."

How you can help:
Join our event on Facebook and spread the word: https://www.facebook.com/events/601301029969910/?ref=22

NEW HAPPENINGS:

SPECIAL GUEST MUSA SYEED joins Interfaith @ The Common Table!
THIS TUESDAY, 6:30-8:30pm.

This Tuesday night, we are excited to welcome special guest Musa Syeed, a filmmaker  from New York City. Musa is visiting for the week and on Tuesday night (6:30-8:30) he'll be joining us to show his film "A Son's Sacrifice" and to discuss it with us. Here is a link to his website where you'll find more info and below is a short description.

"A Son's Sacrifice" follows the journey of Imran, a young American Muslim who struggles to take over his father's halal slaughterhouse in New York City. A first-generation American, Imran must confront his mixed heritage and gain acceptance from his father's immigrant community at the traditional storefront slaughterhouse. On the holiest day of the year, Imran must lead a sacrifice that will define him as a Muslim, as an American, and as a son.

CROWDFUNDING: EVERYBODY'S GAME. Two-part workshop. PRE-REGISTRATION is required.
NEXT MONDAY March 2nd, 6-8pm. (Part 2 is THURSDAY March 12th, 6-8pm.)

Do you work for a nonprofit? Are you a budding entrepreneur? An artist? Do you have a project that you're eager to move on, but don't have the funds? Would you like to bypass traditional sources, such as foundations and banks? Crowd funding can be an easy and fun way to raise money and bring your idea to life by stirring interest and true buy-in from community members, but it helps to go in knowing what you're doing.

All participants will walk away with the beginnings of a concrete plan for their next crowdfunder. So, come prepared with your laptop or tablet, be ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into the project you wish to raise money for. Attendees are strongly encouraged to sign up for both classes. Participants will be split up into groups and will begin projects on the first day that will be finished on the second. Between sessions you'll have time to work on your plans.

Hosted by: Twin Cities Media Alliance. Presented by: Kevin H. Vollmers, Executive Director of Gazillion Strong. Register at: https://www.thedatabank.com/dpg/262/donate.asp?formid=TCM-Event&c=5004735.

Show the World How you Build Peace on Tuesday

Join the #PeaceItForward campaign to tell the world how you make a difference to build peace and to become part of an international video that will be used to raise awareness and grow involvement in peacemaking.

To become part of the campaign, simply stop by Oren Gateway Center from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, to have your photo taken.

Be ready to answer the question of how you build peace and how you make a difference. Maybe you serve meals to the hungry, mentor children or serve on a nonprofit community board. Perhaps you work as part of a restorative justice program, are in a Rotary group that conducts projects across the globe, or help out an elderly neighbor. Peace building takes on many forms, small and large, and we want to capture what you do that makes a difference in your community, your state, our world.

A photographer will take a professional-quality, digital photo and a photo with your cell phone that you can post to social media. The photos will be used as part of a video that will be shown to an international audience at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum being held in Minneapolis from March 6-8. It's your chance to tell the world why peace matters.

The photo shoot is open to the public, so be sure to invite your friends! More at http://www.augsburg.edu/news/2015/02/17/peaceitforward/

Keeping Track of Auggies

Joy in Giving for Neal '57 & Judy '61 Snider

As a pastor for 54 years, Neal Snider '57 saw how money can bring joy if it's shared. Finding joy in giving to an institution that shares their values is one of the reasons why Neal and his wife Judy support the Center for Science, Business, and Religion with current and planned gifts.

"I got an education and I met my wife Judy '61 at Augsburg, and the College was formative for my entire life." He remembers professors who cared about students, invited them to their homes, and supported the maturation of their faith. College professors Carl Chrislock (History), Mario Calacci (Humanities, Greek, and Latin), John Stensvaag (Religion), and Paul Sonnack (Religion) were especially important to Neal. He remembers time with friends at Smiley's Point soda fountain and playing ping pong for hours in the basement of Gerda Mortensen Hall. "I was a really good ping pong player," laughs Neal. "One of the best, but not the best. Jim Norman was the best."

Neal and Judy met in 1956, when Mert Strommen '42, youth director of the Lutheran Free Church, created three teams of Augsburg students to travel west from Minneapolis to meet with, support, and train youth groups in Lutheran Free Church congregations. Neal's group traveled through North Dakota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Washington, ending up at Pacific Lutheran University for the 1956 Luther League convention. In Seattle, female members of the group stayed in the home of West Coast District Luther League president Judy Fosse. When the district officers came to Minneapolis a few months later, Mert asked Neal to meet the Seattle delegation at the train. "I did, and I took them around, and took them to a basketball game," remembers Neal. Judy sent a thank you note, and they started corresponding. "He talked me into attending Augsburg from the Minneapolis end, and my friend Carol Ann (Oversvee) Johnson in Seattle talked me into it from this end," remembers Judy, who had already worked at a bank for several years before she enrolled at Augsburg in 1957. The couple married in 1958.

After graduation, Neal went to Augsburg Theological Seminary and graduated in 1960. "I just had a sense that's where God wanted me to be." At seminary he studied under John Stensvaag, Phil Quanbeck, Sr. '50, and others who made a lasting impression. Neal went on to serve as a pastor in Montana, Washington, and Oregon, and became the only chaplain in the history of the United States to have held a commission as a chaplain in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Neal says of their giving for the CSBR and the lessons that will be taught within its walls, "If money can be used for others, it can be a blessing."

For more of the Sniders' story, visit the CSBR blog: http://www.augsburg.edu/csbr/2015/02/17/neal-57-judy-fosse-61-snider-find-joy-giving-csbr/
