McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Spring 2015
Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Spring 2015 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.
The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2016.
The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Minnesota Literacy Council - Tabling Today
Stop by and visit with a representative from the Minnesota Literacy Council on Friday, February 27th from 9:30-1:00 in the lobby of the Christensen Center.
They are currently recruiting for our Summer Reads, VISTA program, an 8-week long service. During that time, Summer Reads VISTAs will provide quality tutoring to children in grades K-3 from low-income families. VISTAs serve in summer schools, libraries and community organizations throughout the Twin Cities, with the goal of helping children improve their literacy skills and fight the summer slide. On March 26th we will be having an Iron Chef Competition in The Commons. Teams will be of two people, come up with your best recipe to compete against the chef! The sign-up sheet is at the register in The Commons.

Dark Side of the Boom Documentary Screening
The Bakken oil fields have brought great wealth to North Dakota, but there is a dark side to the boom. Sexual exploitation and human trafficking are now part of the social landscape in rural North Dakota. Come view the 30 minute documentary, BOOM, followed by a discussion with representatives from iEmpathize (an international human rights organization dedicated to combating crimes against children).

African Americans in Theater and Film - TODAY
The Office for Equity and Diversity's Vice President Katrice Albert will be moderating the University of Minnesota's next Critical Conversation tomorrow - Friday, February 27 - from 1:30-3:00 pm in the Givens Conference Room, Andersen Library.
BEYOND MYTH-MAKING AND APPROPRIATION: African Americans in Theater and Film
In 1939, Hattie McDaniel broke the color line by becoming the first black actress to win an Oscar for her role as Mammy in the film Gone with the Wind. In 2012, Octavia Spencer also won an Oscar for playing a maid in The Help. What has changed in the portrayal of blacks in cinema and on stage? These two awards are complicated, juxtaposing great talent with persistent stereotypes of blacks as domestic servants, drug dealers, or others consistently needing help from white benefactors. Problematic, often racist depictions continue to appear in film, theater, and social media, where minstrels and blackface still surface in YouTube videos, even of our current African American President. In a discussion drawing from the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, and current theater and film, learn more about African American artistic contributions, not only dispelling myths and stereotypes, but also revealing the appropriation of black culture by white artists.

Spring Wellness Lunch & Learn: Diabetes Awareness
We are pleased to announce a spring brown bag lunch and learn session on Diabetes Awareness and Prevention. Sarah Venturin, who is a registered dietician at Park Nicollet will be leading a presentation on this important health topic. Did you know that the CDC recently reported that as of 2012, 9.3% of the U.S. population has diabetes with an estimated annual cost of treatment in the U.S. of $245 billion? Please join your colleagues in this brown bag session to learn more about this health topic. This presentation will provide more information about what diabetes is, how it effects the body and Diabetes prevention.

Job Opportunity for Students
My name is Frankie, and I'm a student at Augsburg. I'm looking for students who want to make some money and job experience. I use a wheelchair and require assistance with daily living tasks. I'm looking to hire some personal care attendant's (PCAs). The pay is $12.73 an hour. I use a company called Lifeworks who pays the PCAs. There is some paperwork and a background check that they require. Right now I am looking for people to work as a backup this semester. I still need PCAs for the summer and next school year.
