Liberal Arts and Professional Studies: A Summer Conversation Series
Next event: Wednesday, June 18, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Site: James Ford Bell Library, 4th floor Wilson Library, U of MN
Subject: What can early modern maps reveal about structures of knowledge? What structures in the academy (ideological, financial, disciplinary) prevent cross-disciplinary, cross-division collaboration?
More info: Marguerite Ragnow, curator of the Bell Library, will introduce us to some of the world's most extraordinary rare maps, including the Waldseemüller Map (1507) that named America, Olaus Magnus's imaginative Map of the Sea (1539), and much more. The collection was begun by James Ford Bell, President and Chair of General Mills between 1928 and 1948. These maps will surely stimulate conversations about the relationships among maps, politics and power, the decorative arts, scientific knowledge, travel, business and commerce, and of course history.

This series aims to gather faculty and staff from across the College for discussions about what it means to "integrate the liberal arts and professional studies" at Augsburg. Each session includes lunch and a visit to an off-campus site chosen to stimulate rich conversations. No advance reading is necessary, although additional resources can be found on the General Education Moodle website.
AugSTEM Scholarships for STEM Students - Due July 1
Applications are due July 1. Please encourage eligible students to apply. Students who plan to apply should email stem@augsburg.edu.
The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars can receive up to $7,000 per year in financial support. Scholars also become a part of a vital STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
The AugSTEM scholar award is designated for students who are within five semesters of graduating. Applicants must be full-time students in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics) with a 3.0 GPA within their major. This award is available for U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents who demonstrate financial need via FAFSA. Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

VIP Event Tickets for Green Line Grand Opening
As a sponsor for the West Bank station for Saturday's Grand Opening of the LRT Green Line, Augsburg College has a set of tickets for VIP special events associated with event tomorrow.
The tickets include:
1) Official Green Line Ribbon Cutting ceremony, 9 - 10 a.m., Saturday, June 14, Union Depot North. Speakers: Metropolitan Council Chair Susan Haigh, Governor Mark Dayton, Department of Transportation Acting Under Secretary for Policy Peter Rogoff, U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, Representatives Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum, County Commissioners Jim McDonough and Peter McLaughlin, Mayors Chris Coleman and Betsy Hodges, Community Representative Seitu Jones.
2) Inaugural Ride: train departs from Union Depot at 10 a.m., and travels to Target Field, where passengers will disembark and another train or bus, free-of-charge, back to their original location.

In addition, Augsburg will be celebrating the Green Line Grand Opening with a 9 a.m. Ribbon Cutting at West Bank Station with President Pribbenow and other leaders from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. That event does not require a ticket.
Finally, rides are free all weekend on the Metro Transit Green Line. More information about the Green Line Grand Opening Day is at: www.metrotransit.org/opening-day .

Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute
The Religion Department, the Christensen Center for Vocation, and Campus Ministry will be hosting a group of high school youth on campus from Sunday afternoon June 15 - Friday morning June 20. They will be exploring the intersection of technology and Christian community. How does technology enhance and hinder the formation and sustaining of Christian community? Dr. Hans Wiersma will be the instructor this week. If you see these students around, please stop and ask them about what they've been learning and experiencing. We tend to get about 3-5 of these students to enroll in Augsburg each year and they are great students, so lets show them what a great community we have here!
