Liberal Arts and Professional Studies: A Summer Conversation Series
Next event: Wednesday, June 18, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Site: James Ford Bell Library, 4th floor Wilson Library, U of MN
Subject: What can early modern maps reveal about structures of knowledge? What structures in the academy (ideological, structural) prevent cross-disciplinary, cross-division collaboration?
More info: Marguerite Ragnow, curator of the Bell Library, will introduce us to some of the world's most extraordinary rare maps, including the Waldseemüller Map (1507) that named America, Olaus Magnus's imaginative Map of the Sea (1539), and much more. The collection was begun by James Ford Bell, President and Chair of General Mills between 1928 and 1948. These maps will surely stimulate conversations about the relationships among maps, politics and power, the decorative arts, scientific knowledge, travel, business and commerce, and of course history.

This series aims to gather faculty and staff from across the College for discussions about what it means to "integrate the liberal arts and professional studies" at Augsburg. Each session includes lunch and a visit to an off-campus site chosen to stimulate rich conversations. No advance reading is necessary, although additional resources can be found on the General Education Moodle website.

The library now subscribes to the online version of the Chronicle of Higher Education for any faculty member, staff member, or student. You can even download it to your iPad!

VIP Event Tickets for Green Line Grand Opening Saturday
As a sponsor for the West Bank station for Saturday's Grand Opening of the LRT Green Line, Augsburg College has a set of tickets for VIP special events associated with event this Saturday, June 14.
The tickets include:
1) Opening Day Breakfast, 7 - 9 a.m., Union Depot Red Cap Room and Veterans Gallery
2) Official Green Line Ribbon Cutting ceremony, 9 - 10 a.m., Union Depot North. Speakers: Metropolitan Council Chair Susan Haigh, Governor Mark Dayton, Department of Transportation Acting Under Secretary for Policy Peter Rogoff, U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, Representatives Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum, County Commissioners Jim McDonough and Peter McLaughlin, Mayors Chris Coleman and Betsy Hodges, Community Representative Seitu Jones.
3) Inaugural Ride: train departs from Union Depot at 10 a.m., and travels to Target Field, where passengers will disembark and another train or bus, free-of-charge, back to their original location.

In addition, Augsburg will be celebrating the Green Line Grand Opening with a 9 a.m. Ribbon Cutting at West Bank Station with President Pribbenow and other leaders from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. That event does not require a ticket.
Finally, rides are free all weekend on the Metro Transit Green Line. More information about the Green Line Grand Opening Day is at: www.metrotransit.org/opening-day.
Campus Cupboard Summer Hours
Did you know The Campus Cupboard has open hours over the summer?
Every Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. the doors are open, when summer classes are taking place.
The Cupboard is located in Foss, behind the doors next to the Tjornhom-Nelson Theatre.
Please come by to either stock your shelves for the week or to make a donation.
How do you know if you are eligible for using the Campus Cupboard?
All it takes is your Augsburg Student ID # and you can use Campus Cupboard. If you are a day student, WEC student, AU student or Graduate student you can use the Cupboard. Also, keep in mind that using the Campus Cupboard is completely confidential.
If the above time does not work for you, you can also make an appointment by sending an email to the Campus Kitchen.
Also, don't forget
there are bins still located around campus for donations!
You can drop items in the green bin by Einstein's Coffee Shop in Christensen or in the brown bag located in the Urness-Mortensen lobby.

Dean of Global Education Open Forum Today + Friday
Dr. Andrew Law and Dr. Eric Canny, will be on campus to interview with members of the Augsburg community this Thursday and Friday, June 12, 13.
An open forum is scheduled for faculty and staff to meet with each of these candidates.

Dr. Law is the current Director of Off-Campus Study at Denison University, and Dr. Canny is the Executive Director of International Learning at Stetson University. These candidates bring a variety of strengths from the breadth and depth of their experiences in leadership of international student learning.

$200 Summer Course Stipend
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: Looking for a summer education class to take? The Augsburg Paideia Program is offering a summer institute, July 28-31, 2014 on the pedagogy of Paideia. Learn how to implement inquiry-based discussions with students at all grade levels and subject areas. INS 255-A: Paideia Approach: Thinking, Talking, and Reading is a 4 semester course that includes the Paideia Institute. Since the theme of this year's institute is on peace and justice, the President's Fund to Advance Peacemaking is awarding a $200 stipend to participating students. Please contact Anne Kaufman at kaufman@augsburg.edu regarding the stipend and registration. GRADUATE STUDENTS: Looking for a summer graduate-level education class to take? The Augsburg Paideia Program is offering a summer institute, July 28-31, 2014 on the pedagogy of Paideia. Learn how to implement inquiry-based discussions with students at all grade levels and subject areas. The ECS 543 course can be taken for either two or four graduate semester credits and can be counted as an elective course in the MAE program. The registration fee is less than regular graduate tuition and thanks to a grant from the President's Fund to Advance Peacemaking a $200 credit toward the registration fee is awarded.
