Liberal Arts and Professional Studies: A Summer Conversation Series

Site: James Ford Bell Library, 4th floor Wilson Library, U of MN

Subject: What can early modern maps reveal about structures of knowledge? What structures in the academy (ideological, financial, disciplinary) prevent cross-disciplinary, cross-division collaboration?

More info: Marguerite Ragnow, curator of the Bell Library, will introduce us to some of the world's most extraordinary rare maps, including the Waldseemüller Map (1507) that named America, Olaus Magnus's imaginative Map of the Sea (1539), and much more. The collection was begun by James Ford Bell, President and Chair of General Mills between 1928 and 1948. These maps will surely stimulate conversations about the relationships among maps, politics and power, the decorative arts, scientific knowledge, travel, business and commerce, and of course history.

This series aims to gather faculty and staff from across the College for discussions about what it means to "integrate the liberal arts and professional studies" at Augsburg. Each session includes lunch and a visit to an off-campus site chosen to stimulate rich conversations. No advance reading is necessary, although additional resources can be found on the General Education Moodle website.

New Staff Introductions from IA

The Institutional Advancement team would like to introduce Jay Peterson and Amanda Scherer.

Many of you have already met Jay and Amanda. They came on in an interim role in place of Laura Roller, former Sr. Director of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations. They now share the role of Assistant Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations.

Jay and Amanda work to communicate Augsburg's unique higher-education story to increase overall visibility and awareness of the college.

Their work includes:

Community Programs - Securing funding for community programs such as Augsburg College Campus Kitchen, Urban Debate League, Urban Scrubs Camp, Health Commons, and the East African Student to Teacher program.

Corporate + Campus Connections - Establishing corporate partnerships for internships, financial support, mentorships, classroom visits, workshops, research opportunities, corporate volunteerism, and more.

Events - Helping secure funding and support for the Strommen Executive Speaker Series, the annual Mayor's Debate Challenge, Nobel Peace Prize Forum, and more.
