Please read the following notice from the City of Minneapolis. This is especially important for students/staff/faculty who park on the Minneapolis streets near and throughout Minneapolis campus. Please make sure to inform your guests of the restrictions if you plan to invite anyone to campus.
Restrictions go into effect Sunday morning February 23 at 8 a.m. No parking on EVEN sides of non-snow emergency routes is allowed until April ,1 2014.

NOTICE FROM CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS:
"To ensure that fire trucks and other emergency vehicles can continue to navigate Minneapolis neighborhoods, Winter Parking Restrictions will go into effect Sunday in Minneapolis.

Beginning Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 8:00 a.m., Do Not Park on the EVEN numbered side of non-Snow Emergency Routes until April 1, unless conditions allow the City to lift the ban earlier. Streets designated as parkways and Snow Emergency Routes are not affected by Winter Parking Restrictions and vehicles can park on both sides of these streets unless otherwise posted.

Winter parking restrictions are being put in place because Minneapolis has had so much snow that streets have narrowed to the point that access for emergency vehicles is restricted, posing a risk to public safety.

Vehicles that are parked in violation of the parking restrictions are subject to a ticket and tow.

Shredding Service Coming - Clean Your Files

It is time to go through your office files and office storerooms and purge confidential documents according to your retention rules. We will bring a document destruction service to campus in a couple of weeks. Place a facilities work request by March 5 to request pick-up of your confidential documents for shredding. If you have questions about what is confidential, please contact your manager. Sorry, we cannot accommodate personal shredding.

Zyzzogeton Registration Deadline March 14

Augsburg's annual student research festival, Zyzzogeton, will be held on April 11 from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium.

Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton by March 14. Poster and abstract submission directions are detailed at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton as well.

If you need help creating your poster, URGO and McNair will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday, March 5 from 4:30-6 p.m. in Sverdrup 205.

Batalden Summer Internship Program in El Salvador

Current Augsburg students are invited to apply to be an intern this summer with the Centro Arte para la Paz in Suchitoto, El Salvador. These interns will work under the direction of Sister Peggy O'Neill providing assistance in the Center and surrounding community as determined by the intern's skills and interests and the needs of the community. Applicants with an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish proficiency are preferred. The program would operate for eight weeks, from May 17 to July 12, 2014. Students can receive 4 internship credits in Religion as part of this program. The total cost for the program is $550 (which includes internship credit, transportation to and from El Salvador, orientation in country, housing, and most meals).

The Batalden Internship Program is part of the larger Batalden Program in Applied Ethics at Augsburg College. The purpose of the program is to "foster learning in applied ethics… [and] make ethics pertinent to life in general." The low cost is possible through the generosity of the Batalden Endowment.

The Marina Christensen-Justice Award is presented to one graduating senior at commencement each year who best exemplifies Augsburg's motto "Education for Service." The student must have demonstrated a dedication to community involvement as characterized by the personal and professional life of Marina Christensen-Justice, who courageously and effectively reached out to disadvantaged people and communities.

Practice Spanish with us on Thursday

Looking for a chance to improve your Spanish conversation skills? Then we've got just the thing for you - Spanish Conversation group!

Please join us as we gather to chat in Spanish, laugh, and have a bit of fun. From beginning to advanced, all levels are welcome! We meet every Thursday in the Riverside Room, 2nd floor Christensen, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Signs will be posted. Join us for 10 minutes or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Feel free to bring your lunch.

SC 2014-15 Applications Now Available

Scholarship Opportunity for Undergraduate Students of Color

Applications are now being accepted for Scholastic Connections for 2014-15. Successful applicants for 5 available positions will receive a $5000 scholarship and be paired with an alum of color who will serve as the student's mentor.

Students who are Promise Scholars, full tuition President Scholars or International Scholars are NOT eligible for SC.

Applications and letters of recommendation are due March 1.

Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan - Deadline 8

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 60+ scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan during the 2014-2015 academic year or the Fall 2014 semester. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships. April 8 is the deadline for receipt of student applications.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation, and administered by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded more than 1,350 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan.

**The deadline for applications for the Fall 2014 semester or the 2014-2015 academic year is April 8, 2014. Applicants will be notified of the results by May 30. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. (Students studying in Japan during only the Spring 2015 semester should wait until fall of 2014 to apply.)

In addition, *Morgan Stanley Japan will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan during the 2014-2015 academic year. Applicants must submit a short essay on one of two designated public-policy topics together with an application for the Bridging Scholarship program.

The Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) would like to personally invite you to come join us at the Powwow this year! This is a great opportunity for you to learn a little about American Indian culture and traditions . . and it's FREE!

"Grand Entries", which are the start of a dance session are at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. and if you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to see a grand entry, however you are invited to come anytime throughout the day.

We will start at 1 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. There will be craft vendors, information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos for sale and a lot of fun and opportunity to learn. Please join us.

Ben Stroud Reading, Thursday, March 6

ACTC presents writer Ben Stroud, who will read from his work on Thursday, March 6, 7 p.m., at the Augsburg College Barnes & Noble bookstore. Stroud's short story collection "Byzantium" won the 2012 Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Bakeless Fiction Prize and was published by Graywolf in 2013. The book was selected as a Best Summer Book by the Chicago Tribune and Publisher's Weekly, and as a Best Book of the Month by Amazon. Free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing.

Award-winning Physics Alum to Speak On Campus 3/3

McNair and STEM Programs welcome Dr. Alexa Halford '03, Augsburg McNair Scholar, Physics and Mathematics Alumna, Alumni First Decade Award recipient, and current Visiting Young Scientist and Dartmouth College to speak with students and faculty.

Upon graduating from Augsburg, Halford went on to receive a Masters in Astronomy and Planetary Sciences from University of Colorado at Boulder and a Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Newcastle. Shortly after completing her Ph.D. work, Halford won a highly competitive "Visiting Young Scientist" fellowship from Dartmouth College. Since then she has served as a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Researcher in Physics at Dartmouth, and is a member of the scientific team for a NASA-funded scientific balloon experiment project called BARREL (Balloon Array for RBSP Relativistic Electron Losses).

Volunteers Needed for Losar Celebration

On Sunday, March 2, 2014, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be attending an event being hosted by the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota (TAFM) in the Si Melby Gymnasium from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Augsburg is assisting TAFM with various functions at the event, and we have an opportunity for several volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers can be staff, faculty, or students. While volunteers may not get to see the entire Losar celebration, there will be an opportunity to see portions of the event.

Ticket Taking: 8-10 volunteer opportunities
6:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
Volunteers will assist members of TAFM with taking tickets and placing wristbands on guests as they enter the gym, helping guests find seats, etc.

General Volunteer Duties: 2-3 volunteer opportunities
6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Volunteers will assist with various duties such as helping communicate with guests in line, moving of equipment, helping with wayfinding for guests, etc.

Augsburg Site of Tibetan New Year Celebration

On Sunday, March 2, 2014, Augsburg College is the site of the Tibetan New Year/Losar celebration being hosted by the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside at the celebration.

Because of the size of and security for the event, the Augsburg College community will have limited access to parking in Lots K & L and some facilities while His Holiness is on campus. Please note that from approximately 6 a.m.-noon on Sunday, March 2, only ticketed and/or officially credentialed guests will be allowed inside Si Melby Hall and the Kennedy Center.

Augsburg Hosts Bethel in MIAC Playoffs TONIGHT

Augsburg College will host Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball playoff quarterfinal game TONIGHT (Wednesday 2/26) at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.

The Auggies (18-7 overall, 14-6 MIAC) are the No. 3 seed in the six-team MIAC postseason playoff field, while the Royals (13-12 overall, 9-11 MIAC) are the No. 6 seed.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for students (ages 5-younger are free, no senior discounts) and will be sold at the door. All patrons must pay admission (including Augsburg students, faculty and staff); the only passes accepted at the door are MIAC-issued passes. Doors will open at 6 p.m. All tickets will be sold at the door; there will be no presale of tickets.

The Augsburg Alumni A-Club will be offering a special admission deal for Augsburg students. The first 150 Augsburg students to attend the game (showing their Augsburg student ID at the door) will receive free admission.

The game is an Augsburg "White-out" game, so Auggie fans are encouraged to wear white and support their team at the game!

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PARKING - For those planning to park on Minneapolis streets around Augsburg, there is NO PARKING on the EVEN side of NON-SNOW EMERGENCY streets from Feb. 28 until April 1. If you can't make it to Si Melby Hall for the game, you can watch a live video webcast with live statistics by going to Augsburg's GameCentral portal via Stretch Internet (click here for link).

The winner of Wednesday's games -- No. 6 Bethel at No. 3 Augsburg, and No. 5 Gustavus (16-9 overall, 13-7 MIAC) at No. 4 Saint John's (15-10 overall, 13-7 MIAC), will advance to the MIAC semifinals on Friday (2/28) at 7:30 p.m. The lowest remaining seed from the quarterfinals will play at top-seed St. Thomas (21-4 overall, 18-2 MIAC), while the other quarterfinal winner will play at No. 2 St. Olaf (20-5 overall, 17-3 MIAC). The playoff championship game will be on Sunday (3/2) at 2 p.m., with the winner receiving the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.

This is Augsburg's third straight appearance in the MIAC men's basketball playoffs, its 12th appearance since the 1984-85 season, and the Auggies' fifth playoff appearance in the last six years under head coach Aaron Griess.
