Please read the following notice from the City of Minneapolis. This is especially important for students/staff/faculty who park on the Minneapolis streets near and throughout Minneapolis campus. Please make sure to inform your guests of the restrictions if you plan to invite anyone to campus.
Restrictions go into effect Sunday morning February 23 at 8 a.m. No parking on EVEN sides of non-snow emergency routes is allowed until April ,1 2014.

NOTICE FROM CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS:
"To ensure that fire trucks and other emergency vehicles can continue to navigate Minneapolis neighborhoods, Winter Parking Restrictions will go into effect Sunday in Minneapolis.

The snow emergency declared on Thursday, February 20th will expire on Saturday February 22nd at 8:00 p.m.

Beginning , Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 8:00 a.m., Do Not Park on the EVEN numbered side of non-Snow Emergency Routes until April 1, unless conditions allow the City to lift the ban earlier. Streets designated as parkways and Snow Emergency Routes are not affected by Winter Parking Restrictions and vehicles can park on both sides of these streets unless otherwise posted.

Winter parking restrictions are being put in place because Minneapolis has had so much snow that streets have narrowed to the point that access for emergency vehicles is restricted, posing a risk to public safety.

Vehicles that are parked in violation of the parking restrictions are subject to a ticket and tow.

Assessment Day: February 25, 2014

Assessment of student learning describes the ongoing activities at Augsburg College to understand and improve student learning. The process begins with the identification of learning goals or outcomes for students. At the College, faculty identified four skills that we expect students to develop while earning their undergraduate degree: writing, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and speaking. In addition, faculty identified learning goals for each major that reflect what students learn as they complete their major coursework. To effectively assess student learning, we need to gather data about student learning, and to compile and analyze the data. Changes might be made to the curriculum or teaching practices based on what is learned from assessment activities.

Undergraduate student learning assessment involves collecting three types of data: 1) faculty measurements of student learning or skill development in a classroom setting; 2) survey data like the National Survey of Student Engagement; and 3) other examinations like the Collegiate Learning Assessment, Major Field Tests, Board exams, licensure exams, or certification exams. By analyzing these very different types of data, faculty are able to learn a great deal about student learning and how it might be improved.

This year we have planned Assessment Day for undergraduate students and faculty to engage in assessment activities. Students in many majors will complete specific activities to provide data for major assessment. The convocation schedule in place on Assessment Day will provide dedicated time for the activities. However, due to the length of time needed to complete the assessments, some departments are asking students to participate in activities at other times during the day.

For Augsburg College to continue to strengthen the academic program and enhance student learning, it is important that reliable and sufficient data is collected. We ask that students actively participate to the best of their abilities, and we encourage students to participate in multiple types of assessment. Each first-year and fourth-year student is invited (by email) to complete the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). In past years, the response rate has made it difficult to get reliable data for each major. If more students participate, we will be able to provide specific data for majors about how students are engaged. In addition, fourth-year students will be asked to complete the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) either in the context of a class or as a volunteer. The assessment is administered in a computer lab and takes 90 minutes to complete. It provides the College with data on writing effectiveness, critical thinking, and analytical reasoning of the students who complete the assessment and provides comparison data from other private colleges.

Thank you to all of the faculty and students who participate in assessment activities on Assessment Day and who participate in the NSSE and CLA. You are contributing to our academic strength.

Zyzzogeton Registration Deadline March 14

Augsburg's annual student research festival, Zyzzogeton, will be held on April 11 from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium.

Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton by March 14. Poster and abstract submission directions are detailed at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton as well.

If you need help creating your poster, URGO and McNair will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday, March 5 from 4:30-6 p.m. in Sverdrup 205.

Professional Travel Funds

The Faculty Development Committee is pleased to announce that the Center for Teaching and Learning will have limited travel funds available for the remainder of the fiscal year. If you have plans to travel to a professional conference or workshop between now and May 31st, please submit your travel request before March 14th. The Committee will consider proposals in the order received and notify the community when the funds have been depleted. Faculty/staff may apply for the following:

• Up to $1000 for full-time faculty (or those in phased retirement) or $400 for staff who are presenters, moderators, discussants, organizers, etc.
• Up to $700 for full-time faculty and $200 for staff who attend a conference or workshop/seminar.
• Up to a proportionate share of the full-time award for part-time or adjunct faculty who have a half-time or greater teaching load.

Please also note that Provost Kaivola and the Faculty Development Committee are working on providing clear guidelines and a timetable for the dissemination of CTL funds for the following fiscal year. Please watch for an announcement later this spring.

Engebretson and Team Receive $425,919 NSF Grant

The National Science Foundation has awarded a new three-year $425,919 research grant (NSF AGS-1264146) to Augsburg College's Physics Department for continued operation of the Magnetometer Array for Cusp and Cleft Studies (MACCS), a longitudinally-extended array of 8 magnetometers located in Arctic Canada, and for space science research based on MACCS data.

In addition to funding for field operations and scientific analysis, this new grant will continue to support undergraduate research. Two undergraduate students will work each summer with members of the MACCS team, which includes: Mark Engebretson, Professor of Physics and Principal Investigator; David Murr, Associate Professor of Physics and Co-Principal Investigator; Viacheslav Pilipenko, Visiting Faculty and Co-Principal Investigator; Jennifer Posch, Assistant Scientist; Laura Simms, Physics Research Assistant; and Erik Steinmetz, Computer Science Instructor.

Originally installed in 1992/93, the MACCS array detects magnetic variations and electrical currents that originate near the boundary between Earth's magnetosphere and the solar wind and propagate along magnetic field lines that reach Earth's surface at high latitudes. High time resolution GPS receivers installed at two MACCS sites in the past 3 years augment these magnetometers, and make it possible to study motions of the high-latitude ionosphere. The MACCS array has provided data to space scientists worldwide: since 2003, over 50 refereed research papers focusing on the dynamics of Earth's space environment have used MACCS data or were theoretical studies supported by MACCS grants.

SC 2014-15 Applications Now Available

Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color (American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan-Afrikan, and Pan Asian) at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color that serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Five "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2014-15.

Students who are Promise Scholars, full tuition President Scholars or International President Scholars are NOT eligible for SC.

Eligibility Criteria:
Current Augsburg student or advanced-standing transfer student
Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
Demonstrated community involvement on or off campus
GPA of 2.5 or higher

CGE Summer Programs - Apply Now

The Center for Global Education offers two exciting summer study abroad options. CGE operates Augsburg mini-campuses abroad so students can earn Augsburg College credit in a variety of disciplines.

Mexico Summer Academic Program: Six- or twelve-week options are available. Knock off numerous Spanish language requirements, or take an art or religion course. CGE-Mexico also offers academic internships for credit in 10+ disciplines. We can even work with Auggies to customize a summer program through which students can enroll in a specialized Spanish course (e.g. Spanish for Healthcare Settings; Spanish for Business) and pair it with an internship in the same field.

Social Change in Southern Africa: Travel to Namibia, an English-speaking country, and learn about international development while participating in a seven-week internship. Earn credit in history, religion, political science, environmental students, women's studies and more.

Love Your Body Week Continues

So awesome to see so many students at our kick-off Love your Tabling event on Monday. Many thanks to MPIRG students who helped us with the tabling!

Tuesday we continue celebrating love your body week with a lunch presentation by Mike Grewe, LGBTQIA Services Coordinator and Asst. Director for Campus Activities and students from QSU entitled: Affirming Our Bodies: Resisting Negative Messaging about LGBTQIA Bodies. Feel free to bring your lunch and join us for this conversation and presentation. The program will be in the Marshall Room from 12 noon-1:00 pm Tuesday. All are welcome!

Also Tuesday evening from 5-7 pm in OGC 100 the Augsburg Mindfulness Club will be hosting a mindful eating experience. Learn from Alex Haley about exploring your relationship with food, hunger and cravings through guided meditation. No previous experience needed and FREE dinner is included.

The remaining week's events will be on Wednesday as follows:

Wednesday from 11:30-1:30 pm CCHP will once again be tabling in Christensen Center about being Healthy at Every Size. Pick up info on eating disorders and how to help a friend!

Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 pm in OGC 100 we will take a look at a film entitled "America The Beautiful 2: The Thin Commandments." This film is funny, thought provoking and informative regarding the United States' obsession with dieting. Refreshments will be available!

Auggies at the Minnesota Wild
