Shredding Service Coming - Clean Your Files
It is time to go through your office files and office storerooms and purge confidential documents according to your retention rules. We will bring a document destruction service to campus in a couple of weeks. Place a facilities work request by March 5 to request pick-up of your confidential documents for shredding. If you have questions about what is confidential, please contact your manager. Sorry, we cannot accommodate personal shredding.
Minneapolis Street Parking Restrictions in Effect
Please read the following notice from the City of Minneapolis. This is especially important for students/staff/faculty who park on the Minneapolis streets near and throughout Minneapolis campus. Please make sure to inform your guests of the restrictions if you plan to invite anyone to campus.
Restrictions go into effect Sunday morning February 23 at 8 a.m. No parking on EVEN sides of non-snow emergency routes is allowed until April ,1 2014.

NOTICE FROM CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS:
"To ensure that fire trucks and other emergency vehicles can continue to navigate Minneapolis neighborhoods, Winter Parking Restrictions will go into effect Sunday in Minneapolis.
The snow emergency declared on Thursday, February 20th will expire on Saturday February 22nd at 8:00 p.m.
Beginning , Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 8:00 a.m., Do Not Park on the EVEN numbered side of non-Snow Emergency Routes until April 1, unless conditions allow the City to lift the ban earlier. Streets designated as parkways and Snow Emergency Routes are not affected by Winter Parking Restrictions and vehicles can park on both sides of these streets unless otherwise posted.
Winter parking restrictions are being put in place because Minneapolis has had so much snow that streets have narrowed to the point that access for emergency vehicles is restricted, posing a risk to public safety.
Vehicles that are parked in violation of the parking restrictions are subject to a ticket and tow.

Assessment Day: February 25, 2014
Assessment of student learning describes the ongoing activities at Augsburg College to understand and improve student learning. The process begins with the identification of learning goals or outcomes for students. At the College, faculty identified four skills that we expect students to develop while earning their undergraduate degree: writing, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and speaking. In addition, faculty identified learning goals for each major that reflect what students learn as they complete their major coursework. To effectively assess student learning, we need to gather data about student learning, and to compile and analyze the data. Changes might be made to the curriculum or teaching practices based on what is learned from assessment activities.
Undergraduate student learning assessment involves collecting three types of data: 1) faculty measurements of student learning or skill development in a classroom setting; 2) survey data like the National Survey of Student Engagement; and 3) other examinations like the Collegiate Learning Assessment, Major Field Tests, Board exams, licensure exams, or certification exams. By analyzing these very different types of data, faculty are able to learn a great deal about student learning and how it might be improved.
This year we have planned Assessment Day for undergraduate students and faculty to engage in assessment activities. Students in many majors will complete specific activities to provide data for major assessment. The convocation schedule in place on Assessment Day will provide dedicated time for the activities. However, due to the length of time needed to complete the assessments, some departments are asking students to participate in activities at other times during the day.
For Augsburg College to continue to strengthen the academic program and enhance student learning, it is important that reliable and sufficient data is collected. We ask that students actively participate to the best of their abilities, and we encourage students to participate in multiple types of assessment. Each first-year and fourth-year student is invited (by email) to complete the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). In past years, the response rate has made it difficult to get reliable data for each major. If more students participate, we will be able to provide specific data for majors about how students are engaged. In addition, fourth-year students will be asked to complete the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) either in the context of a class or as a volunteer. The assessment is administered in a computer lab and takes 90 minutes to complete. It provides the College with data on writing effectiveness, critical thinking, and analytical reasoning of the students who complete the assessment and provides comparison data from other private colleges.
Thank you to all of the faculty and students who participate in assessment activities on Assessment Day and who participate in the NSSE and CLA. You are contributing to our academic strength.

Zyzzogeton Registration Deadline March 14
Augsburg's annual student research festival, Zyzzogeton, will be held on April 11 from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium.
Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton by March 14. Poster and abstract submission directions are detailed at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton as well.
If you need help creating your poster, URGO and McNair will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday, March 5 from 4:30-6 p.m. in Sverdrup 205.

Professional Travel Funds
The Faculty Development Committee is pleased to announce that the Center for Teaching and Learning will have limited travel funds available for the remainder of the fiscal year. If you have plans to travel to a professional conference or workshop between now and May 31st, please submit your travel request before March 14th. The Committee will consider proposals in the order received and notify the community when the funds have been depleted. Faculty/staff may apply for the following:
• Up to $1000 for full-time faculty (or those in phased retirement) or $400 for staff who are presenters, moderators, discussants, organizers, etc.
• Up to $700 for full-time faculty and $200 for staff who attend a conference or workshop/seminar.
• Up to a proportionate share of the full-time award for part-time or adjunct faculty who have a half-time or greater teaching load.

Please also note that Provost Kaivola and the Faculty Development Committee are working on providing clear guidelines and a timetable for the dissemination of CTL funds for the following fiscal year. Please watch for an announcement later this spring.

Seeking Mentors for Youth Theology Institute

Mentors should be available for some training in April and the entire week of June 14-20. Note: this is a paid internship.

Marina Christensen Justice Award
The Marina Christensen-Justice Award is presented to one graduating senior at commencement each year who best exemplifies Augsburg's motto "Education for Service." The student must have demonstrated a dedication to community involvement as characterized by the personal and professional life of Marina Christensen-Justice, who courageously and effectively reached out to disadvantaged people and communities.

Prayer Service for Dr. Megan Shroat
The Augsburg community will gather Monday, February 24, 7 p.m., in Hoversten Chapel for a community prayer service and candle lighting to remember Instructor of Psychology, Dr. Megan Shroat, and to hold her family in our prayers. Her memorial services were held last week at Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church in Minneapolis and Faith Lutheran Church in Madison, Minn.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014
Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research, and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.
The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, and advising in preparation for graduate study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.
The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Volunteers Needed for Losar Celebration
On Sunday, March 2, 2014, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be attending an event being hosted by the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota (TAFM) in the Si Melby Gymnasium from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Augsburg is assisting TAFM with various functions at the event, and we have an opportunity for several volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers can be staff, faculty, or students. While volunteers may not get to see the entire Losar celebration, there will be an opportunity to see portions of the event.
Ticket Taking: 8-10 volunteer opportunities
6:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
Volunteers will assist members of TAFM with taking tickets and placing wristbands on guests as they enter the gym, helping guests find seats, etc.
General Volunteer Duties: 2-3 volunteer opportunities
6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Volunteers will assist with various duties such as helping communicate with guests in line, moving of equipment, helping with way-finding for guests, etc.

It's Love Your Body Week
The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion is hosting Love Your Body Week with several events scheduled in honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
We kick off this week today with "You are BeYOUtiful Tabling" from 11:30-1:30 pm in Christensen Center. Stop by to make and send You are Beautiful cards to friends or coworkers on campus, check out a new kind of scale and get lots of great ideas on positive and healthy body image.
Tuesday from 12-1 pm in the Marshall Room Mike Grewe and students from QSU will be host a presentation on Affirming Our Bodies: Resisting Negative Messaging about LGBTQIA Bodies. Feel free to join us and bring your lunch.
Tuesday from 5-7 pm in OGC 100 the Augsburg Mindfulness Club will be hosting a mindful eating experience. Learn from Alex Haley about exploring your relationship with food, hunger and cravings through guided meditation. No previous experience needed and FREE dinner is included.
Wednesday from 11:30-1:30 pm CCHP will once again be tabling in Christensen Center about being Healthy at Every Size. Pick up info on eating disorders and how to help a friend!
Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 pm in OGC 100 we will take a look at a film entitled "America The Beautiful 2: The Thin Commandments." This film is funny, thought provoking and informative regarding the United States' obsession with dieting. Refreshments will be available!

Augsburg Site of Tibetan New Year Celebration
On Sunday, March 2, 2014, Augsburg College is the site of the Tibetan New Year/Losar celebration being hosted by the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside at the celebration.
Because of the size of and security for the event, the Augsburg College community will have limited access to parking in Lots K & L and some facilities while His Holiness is on campus. Please note that from approximately 6 a.m.-noon on Sunday, March 2, only ticketed and/or officially credentialed guests will be allowed inside Si Melby Hall and the Kennedy Center.

Note: Dr. Annette Gerten passed away on December 31, 2014. She was an associate professor in the Department of Social Work at Augsburg College. She will be remembered as an inspiring teacher, dedicated researcher, advocate for social justice, collaborative colleague, and loving spouse and mother.
Melissa Hensley Guest Speaker at RARE Learning Day
Dr. Melissa Hensley, Assistant Professor of Social Work, was a guest speaker at the RARE Collaborative Mental Health Learning Day held in Maplewood, Minn. on February 19. RARE (Reducing Avoidable Readmissions Effectively) is a statewide collaborative sponsored by the Minnesota Hospital Association, Stratis Health, and the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement.
