Paris in Springtime - Deadline Extended (Feb. 11)

Prelude to World War II: Americans in Paris and Berlin

Dreaming of springtime? Longing to travel? Love the arts? Need AugExperience?

This unique, interdisciplinary course will draw you into the interwar period, when thousands of Americans flocked to Paris and Berlin in search of fame, fortune, and creative inspiration. They engaged in social transgression and enormous creative explosiveness, spurred on by a swiftly changing political landscape, as liberal democracy and capitalism failed, authoritarian and totalitarian dictatorships proliferated, and, ultimately, political violence and warfare overtook the European continent.

Against this historical backdrop, we will explore the work of famous expatriate American and British writers who flocked to Paris and Berlin in this era, and "indigenous" artists from each city who were experimenting with artistic form. Our travels in Paris and Berlin will also allow you to consider how modernist practices in literature, film, and theater are currently adapted by artists in these cities today.

Visit the Writing Lab

The Augsburg College Writing Lab is now open for the spring term. During fall term, tutors in the Writing Lab conducted well over 1,000 conferences with students on their writing assignments. Please find the Lab on the street level of Lindell Library, left of the circulation desk.

In her highly innovative translations of ancient plays, acclaimed poet Anne Carson "combines contemporary language with the traditional structures and rhetoric of Greek tragedy, opening up [ancient tales]…to a modern audience…" In Antigonick, Carson emphasizes the importance of time–and timing–in tragedy, by introducing a silent character, Nick, who is always on stage measuring things while the events of the play unfold. Antigone is "here given an entirely fresh language and presentation." The Augsburg Theater Department production is an area premiere and only the second production ever of this provocative new play.

Gullah Art of Stick Pounding with Melanie DeMore

You are invited to join vocal activist Melanie DeMore on Tuesday, February 4 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Hoversten Chapel at Augsburg College for an afternoon of singing, stick pounding, hand clapping and foot stomping, as she weaves the fibers of African American folk music with soulful ballads, spirituals and her own original music.

Gilman Int'l Workshop on Feb. 7 & 14

Augsburg Abroad, TRiO/SSS and Multicultural Student Services invite Pell Grant Recipients* to learn how you could be awarded up to $8,000 to study and/or intern abroad through the Gilman International Scholarship. *This scholarship is funded by the US Department of State and is open only to Pell Grant recipients who are also US Citizens.

Over 30 Auggies have been awarded nearly $130,000 through this scholarship over the past five years. Three out of five Auggies who complete the scholarship are awarded!

Dave St. Peter joined the Twins in 1990 and was named president in 2002. He oversees the team's day-to-day operations, strategic planning and interaction with Major League Baseball. First Governance Town Hall Meeting Today

Please join members of the Governance Task Force today from 11:10 a.m.-12:20 p.m. in the Marshall Room to share your views and experiences with decision-making and governance at the College. These meetings are an opportunity for all members of the campus community to be involved in improving our decision-making practices. Forums will ask participants to draw on recent experiences with decision-making at the College and are a chance for open discussion of ways to improve governance at the college.

Augsburg Alternative Spring Break 2014

Since 2006, Campus Ministry at Augsburg College has been committed to spring break service, allowing a group of students to serve amongst a different area and culture, reflect on the impact their work has on others, and continue to imagine their own lifelong commitment to service. We aim to build a diverse community among the Augsburg students that will continue to grow and form even after the trip.

This year we are partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Laredo, TX to immerse ourselves in issues of housing, immigration, and poverty. This year's trip will consist of 28 people, including students and staff.
We'll be gone from March 15-22 and the cost is $250 (including lodging, transportation, and most meals).
