DPS Update
To: All Faculty, Staff, Students
From: DPS
Subject: Follow up to January 24 Augsburg Alerts regarding the lockdown incident at Fairview Riverside hospital
This email is a follow up to the January 24 alerts sent between 10:30 and 10:40 a.m. about the lockdown at Fairview Riverside hospital (2450 Riverside Ave., http://goo.gl/maps/6sRKD ). Given that the incident was resolved quickly, there was not sufficient time to provide the community with additional detail via the Augsburg Alert system. The security of our community is our top priority, and we believe that providing the following information will better equip our community members in responding to future situations of this nature.
Background: Our understanding from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) is that a vehicle crashed a barrier near the Fairview Riverside hospital, sending off an alert that resulted in the Fairview Riverside hospital going on lockdown until the MPD was able to investigate the incident.
Action taken: As part of its partnership with city and neighborhood security services, Augsburgs Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a security alert from the University of Minnesota at the time the incident happened. As is typical with these types of events, however, DPS had no further information beyond the fact that Fairview Riverside was on lockdown. Our focus when security events occur near our campus is to:
(1) Inform the Augsburg community of the event, and
(2) Investigate further to determine appropriate actions to best safeguard the safety of our community.
Although these two actions were taken during this mornings incident, it is clear from the calls and feedback we received that the initial Augsburg Alert message was confusing to many. As a result, we conducted an incident debrief meeting to determine ways to improve our process going forward and help avoid confusion around the communication of off-campus events in the future.
Updates to our procedure: In our debrief discussion, DPS confirmed that we will continue to use the Augsburg Alerts system to inform the Augsburg community of security events in neighboring locations. In addition to reporting where the off-campus event is happening, the initial alert will also direct the community to either avoid the location or, should the incident call for it, go into lockdown as well. In either case, the campus community should continue to carefully monitor alerts and follow additional instructions provided by DPS as our officers continue to investigate.
Going forward: As always, DPS is available to meet with any department or group interested in understanding more about the Colleges security procedures and actions that our community members can take to enhance the safety of our campus locations. Please contact me at cashman@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1644 if you are interested in arranging a security discussion in your area.
For individuals who did not receive the alerts referenced in this email, please go to http://www.augsburg.edu/dps/emergency-notification to learn more about the Augsburg Alerts system and how to register for future alerts.
