Daily Chapel: Las Posadas

Our Advent daily chapel series, "Behold! The Child of Our Longing," concludes with Las Posadas - a traditional Mexican Advent celebration with mariachi music, pinatas, and food!

Las Posadas (the inn) is a tradition celebrated in Mexico, Central and South American countries which re-enacts Joseph's search for room at the inn. Each Christmas season, a procession carrying a baby-like statue representing the Christ Child and images of Joseph and Mary riding a burro or on the shoulders of faithful church members walks through the community streets. The processional stops at a previously selected home and asks for lodging for the night. The people are invited in to read scriptures and sing Christmas carols called villancicos. Refreshments are provided by the hosts. The statue is left at the chosen home and picked up on the next night when the processional begins again. This continues for eight nights in commemoration of the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

Everyone welcome. Please join us for this Augsburg tradition!

10:40 a.m., Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center

Mark Engebretson Honored with Housh CSBR Gift

Allen Housh began a long relationship with Augsburg College when his congregation Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Edina, Minn., nominated him to serve on Augsburg's Board of Regents. He served from 1989 to 2001.

Housh and his spouse Jean have made an estate plan commitment to Augsburg designated to sponsor a Physics faculty office in the new Center for Science, Business, and Religion.

They believe that the new CSBR will "make a statement. It will draw attention to Augsburg College's strength in all three departments: science, business and religion."

The Houshes are honoring physics professor Dr. Mark Engebretson through their gift. Engebretson, they say, "makes a big difference for students."

Mary Laurel True Shares Thoughts on CSBR

Director of Service Learning and Community Engagement Mary Laurel True and Board of Regents member Wayne Jorgenson '71 believe Augsburg fosters a spirit of service by encouraging students to engage and serve in the local community. Likewise, Augsburg alumni recognize the generosity that made their educational experience possible and give back in order to allow future students to experience the same quality education at Augsburg.
