Teaching Civic Engagement - Workshop on January 9

Faculty and staff are invited to an AACU-funded workshop on January 9, 2014: "Teaching Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum"

Funded by an AACU "Bringing Theory to Practice Grant," this seminar will introduce participants to the new field of civic studies and explore how we might "bring theory to practice" in our curriculum. While discussion will be wide-ranging, a specific goal of the seminar is to refine our goals for "Engaging Minneapolis" in the first-year curriculum. Faculty and staff who work with first-year students are encouraged to attend.

The seminar will bring together faculty, staff and administrators, along with leaders from the Sabo Center and the Center for Democracy and Citizenship, to 1) reflect on our institution's civic mission in the current context; 2) consider how our curriculum furthers students' civic engagement and development of intercultural competency; 3) explore the best ways to promote psycho-social development and civic engagement among our students; and 4) refine our current curricular goals and learning outcomes.

Space is limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible to Jacqui deVries devries@augsburg.edu

Lunch will be provided
A short reading packet will be circulated prior to the workshop

Edor Nelson honored by Mark Raabe '53 gift to CSBR

Mark '53 and Jean Raabe honor legendary coach/athletic director Edor Nelson with gift to CSBR

Two years can have a profound impact on a person. That's the length of time Mark Raabe '53 spent at Augsburg College before transferring to the University of Minnesota for a special program where he received both undergraduate and law degrees.

Yet, Mark and his spouse, Jean, both get emotional talking about the bond Mark feels with his Augsburg baseball coach Edor Nelson '38. The bond is so deep that the Raabes are naming a faculty office in Nelson's honor in the Center for Science, Business, and Religion. They also will sponsor a second faculty office using their own names, with a total gift of $50,000 for the CSBR.

Augsburg Exhibit Named One of the Best for 2013

City Pages Year in Review 2013: Visual Art voted

Xavier Tavera's "Calle Lake" exhibit at Augsburg one of the best in 2013

Cowboys and beauty queens populated Xavier Tavera's solo show, "Calle Lake," at Augsburg College. Filled with bright colors and a keen eye for detail, Tavera's work told stories with his photographs, giving a sense of character to the assortment of people he featured from the immigrant community. Offering just a glimpse of his subjects -- posing in front of graffiti, showing off a tattoo or a hat -- we get to know just enough to wish we knew more of their story.
