How to Increase Retention? Teach Civic Agency

Faculty and staff are invited to an AACU-funded workshop on January 9, 2014: "Teaching Civic Agency Across the Curriculum"
9:30 - 3:00 p.m. Marshall Room
Lunch will be provided

Funded by an AACU "Bringing Theory to Practice Grant," this seminar will introduce participants to different models of civic agency and explore how we might "bring theory to practice" in our curriculum. The discussion will be wide-ranging, but a specific goal of the seminar is to refine our learning goals for "Engaging Minneapolis" in the first-year curriculum in order to increase student learning and engagement. Faculty and staff who work with first-year students are particularly encouraged to attend.

In the seminar we will reflect on Augsburg's civic mission in the current context; consider how our curriculum furthers students' civic engagement and development of intercultural competency; explore the best ways to promote psycho-social development and civic agency among our students; and refine our current curricular goals and learning outcomes.

Please RSVP by January 5 to Jacqui deVries devries@augsburg.edu.

The planning team includes Katie Bishop, Harry Boyte, Dennis Donovan, Joe Erickson, Michael Lansing, Mary Laurel True, Jim Trelstad-Porter, Joe Underhill, and Shana Watters.

A short reading packet will be circulated prior to the workshop
