Humanity in Action Accepting Applications for 2014

The Humanity in Action Fellowship has brought together international groups of students and young professionals to study minority rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The 2014 programs will begin in Washington, D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place for four weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Warsaw.

Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians, and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams.

After the program, participants join the global alumni network of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and can take advantage of special professional fellowship opportunities, such as internship programs in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament.

Current sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013 are eligible to apply.

Applications are due on January 9, 2014.

I hope everyone is having a great semester.

The bookstore is requesting book orders or adoptions by Nov. 15, 2013. Please use the new Faculty Enlight website to order your books and experience the benefits it has to offer you

The Faculty Enlight website gives you the option to research and adopt materials in one convenient place. You are able to compare cost and identify format availability before adopting a book, also read peer reviews, and write your own. It allows you to access your past adoptions and order your desk copies. Since this is a new platform for faculty, we welcome feedback on improvements and changes. All registered faculty submitting their adoptions will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card. The drawing will be held on Nov. 16. Bioethics Summer Research Fellowship - Mayo Clinic

On behalf of the Mayo Clinic, URGO announces the 2014 Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics. This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants. Applications for Augsburg's internal competition are due November 12, 2013.

Program details:
• Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
• 8-10 weeks of full-time research
• $5,000 stipend
• Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

2013-14 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship

On behalf of the Augsburg Space Grant Program, STEM program announces the 2013-2014 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics and engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

Application Deadline: October 31, 2013
Submit Applications to stem@augsburg.edu or to SCI 154

Students are encouraged to apply if they are:
-A sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education
-Can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-Show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be:
-A citizen of the United States of America
-Currently, and through spring semester, 2014, be a full-time student in good standing at Augsburg

Enrollment Center Closed this Friday, 10/25/13

Please note both the Student Financial Services office as well as the Registrar's office will be off campus this Friday, 10/25, for staff training & workshops. The Enrollment Center will be closed for the entire day, and no services will be available.

Regular business hours will resume Monday, 10/28. Please plan accordingly and thank you.

Fac/Staff Fitness Wellness Incentives

Today is the 1st day for all faculty/staff who have exercised for a minimum of 30 minutes/day for the past 50 days to report their points on the Community Moodle site listed below. The program continues through the last day of classes in April so there's still time to start. 50 points is an $8 gift card to eat on campus, 100 points is a Nike workout bag and 150 points is a pair of sweatpants. Curtain Rods for Sale

I have two pair of curtain rods from my new house which I do not need:
1) antique brass, trio of leaves on ends, includes matching tie back brackets. One fits 42-82", one 55-107"; $25.

2) black with a small and a large curl on ends. One fits 42-82", one 24-44"; $20.
