If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive and prestigious federal scholarship granted to U.S. college juniors for demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to public service. The scholarship is in the amount of $30,000 toward a graduate education. Students must be nominated by their institution and each institution can send four nominations.

Internal Applications are due January 15, 2014

Program Details:
-Interested in being a "change agent," and improving the ways that government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions serve the public.
-Have an interest working in government, education, the nonprofit sector, or the public interest/advocacy sector to improve these conditions.
-Is committed to working in public service after completing a Foundation-funded graduate degree.
-Interested in seeking a master's degree, a doctorate, or a professional degree such as a law degree or a Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Social Work, Master of Education, Master of Public Policy, or Master of International Affairs.

Program Qualifications:
-A U.S. citizen
-A full-time student pursuing a bachelor's degree with junior-level (or senior standing, but in the 3rd year of college enrollment).

2013-2014 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics and engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

Bioethics Summer Research Fellowship - Mayo Clinic

On behalf of the Mayo Clinic, URGO announces the 2014 Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics! This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants. Applications for Augsburg's internal competition are due November 12, 2013.

Program details:
- Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
- 8-10 weeks of full-time research
- $5,000 stipend
- Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)

Humanity in Action Accepting Applications for 2014

The Humanity in Action Fellowship has brought together international groups of students and young professionals to study minority rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The 2014 programs will begin in Washington, D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place for four weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw.

Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams.

After the program, participants join the global alumni network of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and can take advantage of special professional fellowship opportunities, such as internship programs in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament.

Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013 are eligible to apply.
Applications are due on January 9, 2014.

Truth telling can be a powerful means of undermining racism. What do we mean by ‘Truth telling'? Truth telling is sharing history and stories that have been silenced or repressed. Truth telling is an act of resistance to racism, of decolonization, of liberation. It connects our individual and collective stories to a narrative about race and racism that can compete with the white racial frame. Through their original theatrical and spoken word performance The Forgotten, A Look at the Lives of Young Black Men, participants of the program provide a unique window into their lives as they strive to overcome adversity and rise above the infrastructures that impact their lives.
-Diane Wilson, Mdewakanton descendent, is an award-winning author, writer and gardener. Her essays and memoirs use personal experiences to illustrate broader social and historical context. Ms Wilson is also the Executive Director of Dream of Wild Health, a native owned 10-acre farm in Hugo, MN. She is a member of the Dakota Kiciya and helps organize the Dakota Commemorative Marches on the Lower Sioux reservation.

The annual benefit enrollment period opens Wednesday, November 6 and ends Wednesday, November 20. All forms must be submitted online no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20.

All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment forms. Benefit eligible faculty and staff, working .750 (3/4) full-time equivalency (FTE) or greater are considered benefit eligible. Enrollment forms will be submitted on-line this year. No paper forms will be accepted.

Used Bike Drive for SPOKES - Nov. 8

Cleaning out your garage or storage room in preparation for winter? Drop off repairable used bikes at the Sabo Center House (624 21st Ave. S.) anytime between 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8. All bikes collected will be donated to SPOKES, a non-profit community bike center serving the Cedar-Riverside, Seward, and Phillips neighborhoods in Minneapolis. The goal of SPOKES is to get more people biking by addressing barriers that stops people from biking--including teaching adults to ride a bike, teaching people how to ride safely in urban traffic, providing bikes to low income residents, providing a space for anyone to learn how to work on their own bikes, and working to get better bike routes and more bike parking.

All Saints Day Chapel Service, Nov. 1

We invite you to a special chapel on Friday, November 1, at 10:40 a.m. when the Augsburg Community celebrates All Saints Day. On this festival day we remember with thanksgiving those who have died this past year.

During the worship service, the names of those who have gone before us will be sung during the "Litany of the Saints." The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saint's Day celebrates the people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day, together with congregations throughout the world, we remember the faithful who have died this past year.

You may send the names of those people in your life who have died and who you would like to be named and remembered during chapel to Amy Hanson in the Campus Ministry Office at hansona2@augsburg.edu. Please also include the relationship of the person to you (only the names of the deceased will be sung). Information sheets will also be available during chapel. Please submit names by noon on Thursday, October 31.

Cuban Filmmaker Today at 3 p.m.

Cuban filmmaker, Consuelo Elba Alvarez, is in the United States this week and will be coming to Augsburg this Thursday (October 31) at 3 p.m. in the Marshall Room, Christensen Center.

Consuelo Elba Álvarez is a Cuban filmmaker, producer and director for Cuban TV. Her works include Mujeres de la Guerrilla ("Women of the Rebel Army"). Consuelo will discuss her documentary-in-progress about women in the underground.

Tom Lopez '11 Wins UCR Lung-Wen Tsai Award

Tom Lopez, a 2011 graduate with degrees in Physics and Math, is now pursuing his PhD in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California Riverside.

The 2012-2013 Lung-Wen Tsai Memorial Award from UCR's Mechanical Engineering Department cites that Tom has "demonstrated outstanding work in developing, assembling and perfecting the experimental test-bed for understanding nanoparticle nucleation and growth process." Further, Tom's "involvement in designing the nanostructure of thermoelectric materials and developing real devices in collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena is commended and recognized."

Tom generously took time to speak to Augsburg's Society of Physics Students about his research earlier this fall.

Auggies Claim Share of First MIAC Volleyball Title

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The No. 13-ranked Augsburg College volleyball team continued its historic regular season with a three-set sweep of Concordia-Moorhead (26-24, 25-18, 25-20) on Wednesday evening at Memorial Auditorium, claiming at least a share of its first-ever Minnesota Intercolliegate Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

The Auggies (27-3 overall, 10-1 MIAC) will share the conference championship if St. Thomas (25-2 overall, 9-1 MIAC) is able to beat Saint Mary's (23-7 overall, 6-4 MIAC) on Saturday. The Auggies, ranked No. 13 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll, are guaranteed a first-round bye in the six-team conference postseason playoffs, and will host a semifinal match next Thursday (11/7) at Si Melby Hall. The conference playoff championship match is on Saturday, Nov. 9, with the winner receiving the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national playoffs.

The championship is Augsburg's first regular-season MIAC title since the wrestling team won the final MIAC Team Duals in 2004, and it is the first conference crown for an Augsburg women's sport since the women's hockey team won the conference title in 2000, en route to its national runner-up finish.

The 27 wins are the most for an Augsburg volleyball team since a school-record 32-16 finish in the 1985 season, and are now tied for the fifth-most wins in a single season in the 42-season history of the Augsburg volleyball program.

No appointments are necessary to take part in the bone marrow registry drive. It takes only 20 minutes to join the registry, which involves filling out a confidential registration and consent form, then submitting a painless cheek swab. Donors between the ages of 18 to 60 who meet health guidelines are encouraged to participate, especially racially or ethnically diverse donors (Click this link for more information about the Be The Match registry). Tax-deductible monetary donations can also be accepted.

By taking part in the Be The Match registry, participants can join the effort to give a life-saving bone marrow transplant to those dealing with leukemia or other life-threatening diseases. The most common way of donating marrow now to a patient, should participants get a call that they are a match, is now a procedure very similar to donating blood, plasma and platelets.

The Augsburg baseball program has a close tie to the Be The Match program. Assistant coach Troy Deden '07 is a bone marrow transplant recipient. A two-time All-MIAC catcher and All-Midwest Region third-team honoree in 2005, Deden was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008 and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2009. Last Day for Clothing Donation Today

Today is the last day we'll be collecting new and gently used clothing at the Welcome Desk in Christensen Center to support the Minnesota Internship Center's free store, which serves homeless and housing vulnerable youth attending four charter high schools in the Twin Cities.

Curtain Rods for Sale

I have two pair of nice decorator curtain rods from my new house, which I do not need:
1) antique brass, trio of leaves on ends, includes matching tie back brackets. One fits 42-82", one 55-107"; $25.

2) black with a small and a large curl on ends. One fits 42-82", one 24-44"; $20.
