Congratulations, Carol Enke
The HPE department would like the Augsburg community to join us in congratulating Carol Enke on being selected by MNAHPERD as the 2013 Lou Keller Award recipient.
The award honors and recognizes outstanding services and contributions given by a college or university professor in the fields of health, physical education, recreation, or dance as exemplified by Dr. Lou Keller, former professor at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis.
Carol's work with Augsburg's Wellness Incentive Program and the St. Thomas Physical Activity Challenge is to be commended along with her excellence in the classroom. Congratulations, Carol!
Intergroup Dialogue - SWK 230
In a diverse society, multicultural dialogue about issues of similarity, difference, community, and conflict help facilitate understanding between social/cultural groups. In this intergroup dialogue class, students will participate in semi-structured face-to-face meetings across social identity groups. Students will participate in intergroup dialogue sessions. These sessions will contain exercises that will facilitate dialogue among students about their own experiences and highlight similarities and differences across identity categories. Students will learn about pertinent issues facing the various social identity groups on campus and in society. The goal is to create a setting in which students engage in open and constructive dialogue, learning, and explorations concerning issues of intergroup relations, conflict, and community.
Open to all majors and to all class levels. Class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:50-3:00. Join us for a memorable experiential class which embraces and highlights what it means to be an Auggie in the world.

Annual Benefit Enrollment Period Now Open
We are pleased to announce that we have made significant strides forward in creating a "green" open enrollment process. The annual benefit enrollment period will remain open until November 20. This year our enrollment process will be on-line.
All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment form, even if you plan to maintain the same benefit coverage elections from 2013. Additionally due to enrollment forms being submitted online, no paper forms will be accepted. Human resources will also be hosting three sessions for employees that would like assistance with the online enrollment process.
Please be advised that open enrollment will close on November 20 at 4:00 p.m. No late submissions will be accepted.
During the information sessions, representatives from HealthPartners, Interactive Wellness, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2014.
Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections.

Augsburg is a Top Producer of Fulbright Students
The U.S. Department of State recently announced the complete list of colleges and universities that produced the most 2013-2014 Fulbright U.S. Students. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government's flagship international educational exchange program. The success of the top-producing institutions is highlighted in the October 28 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Three of the four student applicants from Augsburg won Fulbright awards for 2013-2014. This is the 4th time that Augsburg is named Top Producer with 17 awardees since 2006. Dixie Shafer, Director of URGO, said, "the goal next year is to double the number of applicants."

Give to the Max Day: The Health Commons
The Augsburg Central Health Commons is excited to be a part of Augsburg's Give to the Max Day campaign! We're one of 20 departments on campus raising money on Give to the Max Day, November 14.
Our goal this year is to raise $2,500 for basic hygiene supplies for our health center. We provide socks, diapers, baby wipes, razors, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, and other basic health supplies for people living in poverty. Used Bike Drive for SPOKES - This Friday
Cleaning out your garage or storage room in preparation for winter? Drop off repairable used bikes at the Sabo Center House (624 21st Ave. S.) anytime between 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8. All bikes collected will be donated to SPOKES, a non-profit community bike center serving the Cedar-Riverside, Seward, and Phillips neighborhoods in Minneapolis. SPOKES offers a variety of programs and services to the community with the goal of getting more people biking. SPOKES teaches adults and children how to ride a bike, provides bikes to low income residents, provides a space for anyone to learn how to work on their own bikes, and works to get better bike routes and more bike parking.

StarDreamers—The Spirit Water People is a 3-part documentary created by filmmaker Sheldon P. Wolfchild. Come join the preview showing of Part 2, "The Doctrine of Discovery," that focuses on a little-known subject traced back to Christopher Columbus's so-called "discovery" of the lands now commonly known as "the Americas" This doctrine remains the Supreme Law of the Land in the U.S. Come learn the role of this ancient doctrine in our laws, our language, the U.S. governmental system, and its negative effects on Indigenous Peoples today.
This film will be followed by a discussion with 38plus2 director, Sheldon Wolfchild; Birgil Kills- Straight, Lakota elder; and Steven Newcomb, Shawnee-Lenape author and scholar, and the principal person featured in the documentary.

Truth telling can be a powerful means of undermining racism. What do we mean by 'Truth telling'? Truth telling is sharing history and stories that have been silenced or repressed. It is sharing the beauty, strengths and contributions of racial and ethnic communities. It is sharing the stories of what racism and colonization* have done to us, how we have participated, and how we have resisted.
Truth telling is an act of resistance to racism, of decolonization, of liberation. It connects our individual and collective stories to a narrative about race and racism that can compete with the white racial frame. "Historically and in the present, these counter-frames have regularly provided valuable tool kits for oppressed Americans, offering both individual and collective tools"for surviving and combating racism. -Brotherhood Inc. is a non-profit that provides a comprehensive reentry and prevention program to help break the devastating cycles of poverty, unemployment, and incarceration facing young African American males in the Twin Cities. Through their original theatrical and spoken word performance "The Forgotten, A Look at the Lives of Young Black Men," participants of the program provide a unique window into their lives as they strive to overcome adversity and rise above the infrastructures that impact their lives.
-Diane Wilson, Mdewakanton descendent, is an award-winning author, writer and gardener. Her essays and memoirs use personal experiences to illustrate broader social and historical context. Ms. Wilson is also the executive director of Dream of Wild Health, a native owned 10-acre farm in Hugo, Minn. She is a member of the Dakota Kiciya and helps organize the Dakota Commemorative Marches on the Lower Sioux reservation.
Each day will include a full slate of workshops, with opportunities to reflect, connect, and commit.

We will also highlight the many resources available to support you in finding your path at Augsburg. All this, plus time for your questions! Mindfulness Club Fall Workshop Thursday
Join the Mindfulness Club for mindfulness teaching practice from favorite expert, Br. Chi Sing. We'll learn and practice basic sitting, walking, and eating meditations with free food from Afro Deli. This is great way to get more mentally strong for finals. In fact, a recent Augsburg Convo speaker (Dr. Beilock from University of Chicago) cited research showing that students benefited from just 10 minutes of meditation training before a stressful test: "on average, those with meditation scored higher (B+) than those without (B-)." Pretty cool!

Keeping Track of Auggies
Biology Professor has Paper Published
Matt Beckman, assistant professor in biology, is first author on a paper entitled "Stereoselective inhibition of serotonin transporters by antimalarial compounds," that was recently published in "Neurochemistry International," the journal of cellular and molecular neuroscience. The work began when Dr. Beckman was a Grass Fellow at the Marine Biological Labs in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1999, and was completed this fall through a collaboration with Dr. Keith Henry and his colleagues at the University of North Dakota. This paper provides the first detailed description of how antimalarial compounds interact with the serotonin transporter at the molecular level.
