Public Safety and Residence Life will be conducting mandatory fire drills in the residence halls on Thursday, Oct. 24. Please be aware and evacuate the building as quickly and safely as possible.

Bioethics Summer Research Fellowship - Mayo Clinic

On behalf of the Mayo Clinic, URGO announces the 2014 Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics! This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants. Applications for Augsburg's internal competition are due November 12, 2013.

Program details:
- Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
- 8-10 weeks of full-time research
- $5,000 stipend
- Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

Humanity in Action Accepting Applications for 2014

The Humanity in Action Fellowship has brought together international groups of students and young professionals to study minority rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The 2014 programs will begin in Washington, D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place for four weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw.

Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams.

After the program, participants join the global alumni network of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and can take advantage of special professional fellowship opportunities, such as internship programs in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament.

Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013 are eligible to apply.

2013-14 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship

On behalf of the Augsburg Space Grant Program, STEM program announces the 2013-2014 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics and engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

Application Deadline: October 31, 2013
Submit Applications to stem@augsburg.edu or to SCI 154

Students are encouraged to apply if they are:
-A Sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education
-Can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-Show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be:
-A U.S. Citizen of the United States of America
-Currently, and through spring semester, 2014, be a full-time student in good standing at Augsburg

2014 Annual Benefit Enrollment

All open enrollment materials have been posted to the HR Moodle, http://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodlecommunity/course/view.php?id=329

The annual benefit enrollment period opens Wednesday, November 6 and ends Wednesday, November 20. All forms must be submitted online no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20.

All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment forms. Benefit eligible faculty and staff, working .750 (3/4) full-time equivalency (FTE) or greater are considered benefit eligible. Enrollment forms will be submitted on-line this year. No paper forms will be accepted.

We strongly encourage all benefit eligible faculty and staff to attend one of the five benefit information sessions. Sessions are scheduled as follows:

The fair allows candidates to pursue professional opportunities and internships in all levels of government and nonprofit agencies. The job fair is open only to students and alumni from participating colleges and universities. Free and open to all students!

Welcome Jane Larson to the CLASS Office

Jane Larson has joined the CLASS Office as a temporary Disability Specialist during the search to fill an open position. Along with the other three Disability Specialists, she will be meeting with students and working with faculty and staff if they have any questions or concerns about the students on her caseload.

Jane taught at Normandale, became an instructor for an IBM supported project to train people with disabilities, and then served as Director of Disability Services at MCTC for over 17 years. She has retired from that position and now works as a consultant providing interim and project services in post-secondary education.

If you have any questions about students who might be working with Jane or with any of the other Disability Specialists, you can call the CLASS office at 612-330-1053.

Commute Survey - You Can Win a $50 Gift Card

Augsburg College is part of the Central Corridor Anchor Partnership, a group of healthcare and higher education institutions working together to ensure that the new Green Line LRT creates opportunity for those who live and work in the area. The Anchor Partnership and Metro Transit are conducting a survey of staff, students and faculty in advance of the METRO Green Line opening next year. Information gathered will be used to guide sustainable transportation planning and commuter programming around Augsburg.

The Commute Survey will be open through October 31. It takes about 5 minutes to complete. Participants who provide a valid email address or phone number will be entered into the drawing for the gift card. The winner will be announced November 5.

The 14th anniversary show for the Mexico Lindo Dance Group will be held on campus at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26 in the Sateren Auditorium.

Congratulations to Jillyanne Marcinkowski, who was a finalist and 4th place finisher in persuasive speaking at yesterday's Twin Cities Forensics League tournament, held at Normandale Community College. Also competing at the TCFL meet were Yemi Melka (informative speaking) and Matt Kukar (after dinner speaking).
