Writing Lab Opens Tuesday, Jan. 22

Last term the writing tutors conducted approximately 1400 tutoring sessions and are now ready for spring semester/winter trimester. Visit them in Lindell Library, lower level, next to the circulation desk. These are the hours for the new term:

Monday: 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Friday: 4:30 - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 5 - 8 p.m.

Also, if faculty members would like a tutor to visit their classes to discuss this support service, please contact Kathryn Swanson, x1010.

Peace Scholar Applications Deadline Jan. 31

Augsburg sophomores and juniors with a strong interest in peace and justice issues are invited to apply for the 2013-14 Nobel Peace Prize Scholar Program. Three students will be selected to join a group of a dozen students taking courses in Norway at the International Summer School and the Nansen Dialogue Center. The travel and tuition costs are largely covered by the program (i.e. this is a close to a free trip to Norway for this summer!) The Peace Scholars also take a leading role in promoting student participation in the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, held each Spring on the Augsburg campus. So far no one has applied, which seems like kind of a shame, given the kind of opportunity we are talking about here.

Practice Spanish this Thursday

"New semester, new plan: time to boost my Spanish conversation skills."

Ready to really start speaking Spanish? We've got just the thing for you - Spanish conversation group! All language levels are welcome to join us for laughs and interesting conversation as we practice speaking in a relaxed and friendly setting. We meet every Thursday from 11:00-1:00 in the Riverside Room, 2nd fl. of the Christensen Center. Signs will be posted. Drop in at any time and stay for as long as you like. MFA Creative Writing Mentor Book Reading

Augsburg MFA-Creative Writing Nonfiction Mentor Jack El-Hai will read from his work on January 31 in the Admissions Lounge, ground floor of the Christensen Center. The reading is sponsored by the Augsburg Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Lost Minnesota and The Lobotomist will be for sale, and Jack will be available to sign books. The Lobotomist is print on demand, so if you would like to purchase a copy, please email Laura Forgey at the bookstore at forgey@augsburg.edu by January 23 to make sure we have a copy for you.

Jack El-Hai is a writer of literary journalism and creative nonfiction. His books include The Nazi and the Psychiatrist (Public Affairs, forthcoming), Turbulent Air: A History of Northwest Airlines (University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming), and The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness (Wiley). The Lobotomist is currently in production as a TV series pilot for HBO and was previously adapted as a PBS American Experience television documentary.

Jack's newest project, The Nazi and The Psychiatrist is slated for publication by Public Affairs Books and has recently been optioned for stage and screen by Mythology Entertainment. The book explores the complex relationship between American psychiatrist Dr. Douglas M. Kelley and Nazi war criminal and Hitler's right-hand man Hermann Goering. It is the first to access Kelley's personal and professional papers from the Nuremberg Trial years, which the shrink's family had hidden away for years.

Jack's essays and articles have appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, Scientific American Mind, The History Channel Magazine, American Heritage, and The Saturday Evening Post. Winner of a Minnesota Book Award and a McKnight Artist Fellowship, he is a past president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Bennington College and an undergraduate degree in English from Carleton College.

Come Join ASAC at the All-Nighter

The annual ASAC All-Nighter will be held in Christensen Center on Friday, January 25. Doors open at 8pm and concert starts at 10:30pm. First 300 students get free shirts and swag. Students need to show Augsburg ID for admission. Each student is allowed to bring one guest. We will be handing out wristbands this year so the earlier you arrive, the earlier you get admitted into the concert.

Get Your Flu Shot January 23

The best way to protect yourself against the flu is to get vaccinated every flu season. If you have not had your flu shot this season there is still time to protect yourself! The MN Visiting Nurse Association will be on campus on Wednesday 1/23/13 from 12 noon - 1:30 pm in East Commons.
