Understanding Intercultural Conflict Styles

This staff development workshop will provide participants an opportunity to learn their personal intercultural conflict style, learn about the intercultural conflict styles of others, and takeaway strategies for working across these conflict style differences.
About the facilitator:
Joanne K. Reeck-Irby serves as Director of Campus Activities and Orientation at Augsburg and has trained students and staff in areas of cultural competency, anti-oppression, white privilege, and inclusive language for over 10 years.

Writing Lab Opens Today
Fall term, tutors in the Writing Lab conducted nearly 1,400 conferences with students on their writing assignments. The lab will open for spring semester/winter trimester today, Tuesday, January 22.
Here are the hours:
Monday: 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Friday: 4:30 - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 5 - 8 p.m.

URGO Summer Research App Due Feb. 4
The URGO Summer Research Program is a 10-week, on-campus program where students are funded to join a faculty members on-going research/creative line or carry out an individually-designed project. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, weekly seminars, and roundtable discussions with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers with a $4,000 stipend while half-time researchers receive a $2,000 stipend. The program runs from the last week of May to the first week of August.
URGO is also rolling out a new Research Assistantship program this summer that provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,000 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Peace Scholars Spend 2 Months in Norway
Ever wanted to travel to Norway? Augsburg sophomores and juniors with a strong interest in peace and justice issues are invited to apply for the 2013-14 Nobel Peace Prize Scholar Program. Three students will be selected to join a group of students from other U.S. colleges taking courses in Norway at the International Summer School and the Nansen Dialogue Center. The travel and tuition costs are largely covered by the program. The Peace Scholars also take a leading role in promoting student participation in the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, held each Spring on the Augsburg campus.

Moodle Lab for Hybrid Learning

Please join LFCs and CTL representatives for a working workshop to help you get started designing your fall hybrid course in Moodle. The workshop will consist of a brief overview of Augsburg's course design support and online best practices.
The remainder of the workshop will be open for faculty to begin work on their Moodle sites. LFCs will be available to set up Moodle sites and give individual assistance. Use the computers in the Foss lab or bring your own laptop. Faculty are free to come and go as their schedules permit.

Flu Shots Available On 1/23
The Minnesota Visiting Nurse Association will be on campus on Wednesday 1/23/13 from 12 - 1:30 pm in the East Commons. If you have not gotten your flu vaccine yet this season there is still time to do so and you should still get one. The clinic is open to all students, faculty and staff. Most insurances are accepted so please be sure to bring your insurance card or you can pay $29 cash or check.

Free Yoga Class TODAY
CCHP reminds all interested students, faculty and staff that there is a free yoga class on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 noon to 1 pm in the Wrestling Room of Kennedy Center.
The Tuesday class is a more active yoga class and the Thursday class will be a more restorative yoga class with some deeper stretches.
Please wear comfortable clothing and bring your own yoga mat if you would like. A limited number of free yoga mats are available on a first come, first serve basis.

Internship Opportunity in China for 2013 Grads and Alums
The United International College (UIC), Augsburg's partner college in Zhuhai, China, is recruiting college graduates for a one year teaching internship with undergraduate students. Graduates in any discipline may apply. Responsibilities include tutoring, reviewing papers and leading co-curricular club activities.
Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and an excellent command of written and spoken English. Internships are available in the following academic departments: English Language Centre; Teaching English as a Second Language; English Literature; Computer Science and Technology; Applied Psychology; Business and Administration; and Public Relations & Advertising. After several months of weighing options, the IT Advisory Group is considering a recommendation that Augsburg transition to using the Gmail/Google Apps platform for email, calendaring, and network/file storage. The committee invites faculty, staff and students to any of several upcoming brown bag sessions to learn about this powerful framework for collaboration and to provide feedback on the idea of transitioning.

MFA Creative Writing Mentor Book Reading
Augsburg MFA-Creative Writing Nonfiction Mentor Jack El-Hai will read from his work on January 31 in the Admissions Lounge, ground floor of the Christensen Center. The reading is sponsored by the Augsburg Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Lost Minnesota and The Lobotomist will be for sale, and Jack will be available to sign books. The Lobotomist is print on demand, so if you would like to purchase a copy, please email Laura Forgey at the bookstore at forgey@augsburg.edu by January 23 to make sure we have a copy for you.
Jack El-Hai is a writer of literary journalism and creative nonfiction. His books include The Nazi and the Psychiatrist (Public Affairs, forthcoming), Turbulent Air: A History of Northwest Airlines (University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming), and The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness (Wiley). The Lobotomist is currently in production as a TV series pilot for HBO and was previously adapted as a PBS American Experience television documentary.
Jack's newest project, The Nazi and The Psychiatrist is slated for publication by Public Affairs Books and has recently been optioned for stage and screen by Mythology Entertainment. The book explores the complex relationship between American psychiatrist Dr. Douglas M. Kelley and Nazi war criminal and Hitler's right-hand man Hermann Goering. It is the first to access Kelley's personal and professional papers from the Nuremberg Trial years, which the shrink's family had hidden away for years.
Jack's essays and articles have appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, Scientific American Mind, The History Channel Magazine, American Heritage, and The Saturday Evening Post. Winner of a Minnesota Book Award and a McKnight Artist Fellowship, he is a past president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Bennington College and an undergraduate degree in English from Carleton College.

Gain Medical Field Experience as a Scribe
On January 30th URGO will be hosting an information session on medical scribing with Lead Scribe, an emergency department scribing agency in the Twin Cities. A scribe is a medical documentation specialist who works with an emergency department physician to produce medical notes recording what occurs during a patients visit. The scribe is directly involved in patient interviews and physical exams and continues as an integral part of the treatment team throughout the patients stay in the emergency department. Many students applying for medical school or other health-related fields have found scribing to be a great learning experience.
